Imperialism Essay

The Age of Imperialism has brought about countless impacts upon the world. Mankind’s natural curiosity has led to the spread of technology and the expansion of many ideals. Many countries are now interconnected and in theory have the ability to increase in wealth. Imperialism has also been thought to promote civilization and allow mankind to advance further in society. These are certainly not the true intentions of imperialism. Imperialism was mainly fueled by the thirst for power and the desire or need for wealth and more natural resources. The Age of Imperialism occurred from 1880-1914. Many of the European countries were industrialized by then and had plenty of wealth. Great Britain in particular, was a huge industrial power. Although it seems unlikely that such a wealthy country would imperialize to gain more wealth, the purpose lies in the lack of resources in Great Britain, as well as the intense competition between the Great Powers of Europe. Therefore, imperialism was solely created for such purposes and yields no benefit economically, socially or politically. Imperialism has caused many countries to become more economically exhausted, it is a form of Social Darwinism which promotes cultural or racial superiority and it has forced a foreign government on many states which usually results in a difficult transition to adapt to the new government.

Many European countries invaded other countries in order to increase their own economy. In order to keep their economic status in Europe, the countries competed with each other. The more pieces of lands they owned, the more powerful they are and thus, the wealthier they are. Since the Great Powers of Europe were the most powerful at the time, any country that was invaded could not challenge European countries that were armed and more technological advanced. After conquering the new land and marking it as part of the country’s empire, the imperialists would attempt to establish a government so they can control the economy of the invaded. Africa is an example of a country that is in poverty because of imperialism. Imperialism eventually led to globalization which is the main cause for African poverty. African farmers who could be profiting by a small amount are not profiting at all because of globalization. When crops are mass produced by machines and exported, they are less expensive. People living in Africa buy the products exported by a foreign country rather than buying products made in their own country which is more expensive, resulting in a harm of the African economy. Many imperialist countries extract natural resources from other countries, which causes depletion in the resources and money. One may argue that without imperialism, countries that lack natural resources would not be able to survive and further deplete economies. There are other means of obtaining resources. Not necessarily through absolute control which is what imperialism supports, but through cooperation. Many ancient civilizations didn’t use money. Native American tribes hunted together and shared the parts of the buffalo. A tribe contained up to 55 people while coexisting cooperatively. People are able to survive without money and economy would not be an issue if it does not exist.

In a sense, the “White Man’s Burden” was a justification for the Europeans to conquer a state. Many believed that traveling to Africa or any other places where there are “uncivilized” people to teach them to become “civilized” were the righteous duty of the White Man. The sense of racial superiority and arrogance is clearly present as a man wrote in the “Los Angeles Times” during the 1800’s in the following excerpt1. “It is not, as many suppose inhabited entirely by the woolly haired, thick-lipped negroes; but various tribes of native Africans….” “But some of the tribes who inhabit this almost unknown country are almost beastly in their looks and habits, and wander about naked and dirty, living all their lives without ever taking a bath, ignorant and brutish and cruel.” The act of imperialism has caused many to believe that it is their duty to spread civilization, to teach the “ignorant” the proper way of living. Ultimately, anyone who was not of the white race was considered as “lesser beings” or “inferior”. Racism was being promoted as imperialism took place. The British would discriminate people that are living in their empire. In India, many Indians could not walk on the same side as a British. Gandhi himself was thrown out of first class even when holding a valid first class ticket. Ideals that involve inequality and discrimination do not benefit society socially. Imperialism has assisted in the movement to stop racism. It was because of the unjustness of imperialism that people were suppressed and were finally able to defy against authority. However, this does not change the fact that imperialism has imposed racist movements and ethnocentricity.

Very often, imperialist countries would establish a government on the conquered territory. These governments will sometimes force the people of that country to assimilate, sometimes causing the culture, language or religion to vanish. Western ways of life would be taught and many systems would be set up, such as an education system, health care system or tax system. These new systems cause many people to become overwhelmed and unaccustomed to the foreign ideals that are being presented to them. Imperialism does not help countries become politically inclined because it causes it cannot create order. A country that does not have what is thought to be a “proper” system of governing should not be controlled by a foreign country that most likely does not know what goes on inside that country. It is highly unlikely that an outside power would know the country’s people, its cultures or its needs. Having too many colonies set up will be very difficult and cause people to become more aggravated because of the indifference of the foreign powers.

Imperialism had the intention of expanding economies of the imperialists, racial movements will not benefit society and the apathy of foreign governments would not improve the “civilization” of the countries. Imperialism has been one of the main factors where countries in poverty stand today. The problems that imperialism has created will be very difficult to resolve. Perhaps we have overlooked the simplicities of the past and further complicated things as each year goes by.
