Ogre's skin

I'm trying to follow the instructions listed out in the ogre army book and I can't get the skin to come out right.

It says to paint with a layer or Graveyard earth and shadow grey and then to lighten with Kommando Khacki (sp?) I did that and the result was way way to light so I diluted the khacki and the result turned out too splotchy.

Then I tried mixing all 3 paints together which looks pretty good but is still too dark.

Should I keep on mixing the 3 paints and just add more of the Kommando or was my first apporach the way they wanted me to do it?

Paint it like normal skin, but with the colours suggested.
