Most people in the world don't realize it, but there is another world connected to our own: Unlike our world, this world is an untamed land, filled with rolling hills, lush forests, high mountain peaks, and rushing rivers.

But even more impressive than this realm's flora is its fauna: many creatures that are thought to be fantasy in the human world, such as griffons, phoenixes, unicorns, and fairies; coexist along with equally special Pokemon. It is from the Pokemon of this realm comes its most amazing phenomenon of all: magic. In fact, such phenomenon such as lightning, rainbows, and snow are caused by magic entering the human world, even though the human world doesn't realize this.

For a very long time, the Magical Realm had no guardian at all and the creatures could do as they pleased. Before long, the Pokemon of this realm began to quarrel with each other, which led to fierce fighting. The humans call the resulting war the "Red and Green War"; which was eventually ended by a human known in the realm as the Wave Guider, and his companion, Rukario. The Wave Guider's peacemaking efforts among the creatures of the land brought into balance the warring factions of magic in the world, and the Magical Realm was at peace. Rukario ruled over the realm, while the Wave Guider assisted him.

Years passed, and being a mortal, the Wave Guider grew old. But before he passed on, he asked Rukario to hide his magical scepter, which granted him his magical power, in the human world, in hopes that whoever touched it would become Guardians of the four magics and rule the Magical Realm alongside Rukario. Rukario complied with his master's final request, and sent the scepter to a mountainous area in Houen, nearby a town called Rota, who deeply believed in the magical realm, and was one of many points in which humans and magical beings could cross back and forth between worlds. It was believed that the first person to touch the scepter would be given Black Magic, the Wave Guider's strongest magical skill. The next three people to touch it would then be able to choose which magic they wanted to control, and these four, after proving themselves; would join Rukario in the Magical Realm.

Time passed, and one by one portals between the human and magical worlds began to fade away, but the one nearby Rota Town remained, albeit inactive. Yet the people clung to the hope that four Guardians of magic would come and be chosen.

Ash and his friends came to Rota Town for what they thought would just be a place to rest on their journey, but Ash discovered the scepter and gained the ability to use Black Magic, just as the prophecy foretold. Two of his companions, May and Brock, accepted Time and Summon magic, respectively...but there was no one to accept White magic...Max, the smallest of Ash's companions, appeared to resist the magical power, and so it was sent to Kanto, where another of Ash's companions, Misty, accepted it.

With Rukario's help, Ash, May, and Brock used their newfound power to save the town from being destroyed at the hands of the Regi Trio. The Regis were banished to a part of the magical realm where all the evil and darkness dwelled: The Shadow Realm.

Having proven themselves worthy of becoming guardians, Ash, Misty, May, and Brock were sent through the portal at Rota Town and into the Magical Realm. Once there, the four learned of the balance of magic, and the many ways in which it could be upset, but the most dangerous kind of upset would be a creature escaping the shadow realm. If any creature disrupts the balance in that way, not only is the Magical Realm affected, but the human world is affected as well: The weather goes haywire, machinery malfunctions, even monsters that are normally confined to the Magical Realm appear in the human world! The consequences for the Magical Realm are much worse: Pokemon turn wild, monsters appear, and the realm generally begins to die. The four new Guardians promised Rukario that they would prevent the balance from being upset in any way they could, and successfully did so for a long time.

Despite all their best efforts, a Dark Dragonite has risen up from the realm of shadow, and is threatening to destroy the balance of magic in the world. The four Guardians tried to fight against it, and bring back the balance, but even their power was no match for the dark power the Dragonite had.

Knowing that he doesn't have very much time, Rukario decides to come to the human world in search of humans to train in the magical arts, so they can help him, Ash, Misty, May, and Brock defend the magical realm
