When someone says yaoi when it's clear that they're talking about shounen ai? They're not synonyms, girls (I'm talking to you guys too). Believe it or not. If the guys are having sexual intercourse, that's yaoi. If the guy's d**k is /not/ in the other's a**, that's shounen ai. Basically, yaoi is the hardcore stuff, and shounen ai is the fluff you all love to read. I know some of you know this and get a little irked when someone uses the wrong term so I'm helping you out here. And I'm also helping out those of you that use the wrong terms too. If you're talking about it in general, BL is the term to use. Don't use yaoi unless you're actually talking about men having sex, 'kay?
...I just noticed I might've sounded a little mean to those that use the wrong terms. I'm sorry! Totally unintentional. Don't take the wrong way. XD;

I've heard so much arguement every which way for this topic that I don't use any of those terms anymore. I'll stick with saying 'man-love'. It covers it all for me and I won't feel like a moron because everyone else can't get their s**t together and agree on it. 3nodding

I use terms as follows... - yaoi for anything that is graphically explicit enough to be pornographic - boys love for anything that can sit on the shelf in a bookstore without shrink wrap (regardless of warning label or not) and have that not be a problem - homoerotic shoujo for stuff that is basically shoujo manga with gay overtones
I dislike people using the term yaoi for stuff that really isn't only because it does lead to a lot of confusion as to what they like. Because if you're chatting with me over MSN and tell me you're into yaoi, I might mention some really explicit manga and yea... that's not so good to do if you're only reading stuff like Loveless or Gravitation.
