Rellik San Fallentowards Rellik San Fallentowards Rellik San People who say Tarja was the heart and soul, seem to forget its Toumas who writes, arranges and composes all the songs, I think that qualifies him as the heart and soul. biggrin yes people do forget that but when people say heart and soul they mean that the VOCALS had more heart and soul. Tarja sang all the songs with a certain passion and emotion that fitted the songs. Annette's voice in my opinion anyways sounds very contribed for the songs, like she has to force emotion or character, where Tarja simply didn't. Yes but Tarja had what? 11 Albums and god knows how many tours to perfect her vocals? Maybe when Anette has been as prolific, only then should you make comment on it. No such thing as perfect. And tours do not "perfect" how much heart and emotion you put into a song, it can better your singing, with strenghth, tone, pitch...the whole s**t and she-bang. The emotion is entirely within the singer and how much they wish to put forth. And don't even try to tell me again that I can't make such comments, I sing, I'm going into University for it, it does not take 11 albums and many many tours to put heart into the singer. The singer is the heart. Oh please, the singer is never the heart the composer always is. You can put emotion in it until your blue in the face, but unless the composer can drive the band to their best or writes a good song, then a bad song is still a bad song. Tarja if anything probably used less emotion then Anette... bare in mind, off stage, Tarja would have little to do with the band, going so far as to travel on a separate plane then them, you can't tell me that sort of detachment from the band and composer can generate emotion when the lyrics are sung. She's a good singer, but she was entirely business through and through.
Gah!, i never said anything about the singer being over the composer and yes if we're talking about THE HEART OF THE BAND, then yes it;'s the damn composer but i am only talking about the vocals here. I know tarja in the end was so detatched from the band it was horrible. She just had this quality in her voice that connects with emotion and the lyrics on more of a raw level then it does with Annette and that was my original point. After I was further defending it with the bare fact that time goes not put more heart into a song...unless you wrote it yourself. Hense forth your point about composers...so do we have that all cleared up?

In which case, give Toumas more time to write songs that benefit Anettes vocal style before you pass complete judgement, I'll accept you prefer Tarja over the style on Dark Passion Play, but he worked with her for 11 years, so of course the songs he wrote for her made more of an impact because they were written with her talents in mind.
But I'll agree to disagree here.

Fair enough. I do prefer tarja's voice, I felt the mix of classically based singing and metal worked wonderfully. While Annette doesn't have that operatic voice ...i don't think that's what the rest of the band wanted in a new singer, nor do i think she is a horrible singer. Just too poppish(and i said ISH) for my tastes. So we will agree to disagree. I would however like to know more insight into your overal opinion of Annette's voice.

Personally I like it, its less... specialised then Tarja's voice and makes the band come across as much more acceptable, I know people who hate their previous stuff, but love Dark Passion Play, because of Annettes vocals. I agree whilst her voice does seem poppish at first, given time, it does grow on you and you start to see what Toumas saw when he hired her.

meh, I like 2-3 songs...I really like Amaranth...but eva on the other hand...god blah...the song its self isn't bad I just didn't like the way the vocals were I'd prefer to hear it done by a celtic singer, I think the purity in the vocals would give the song more meaning. But again it's just me, because I am a singer i look for the imperfections razz I'm more a fan with the older stuff. And it's not just because of the vocals. I liked Amaranth because it felt like nightwish,(could even imagine tarja sing it)...Also don't take it as that i don't like the new nightwish....i prefer the older stuff.

Well its all a matter of taste really. I'm not really a singer or musician of any sorts (though I do play/produce/mix/sing) I'm more a visual artist so imperfections as you say, tend not to really bother me.

Fallentowards xxrackellaxx Hm. I think Anette's voice sounds a bit too... pop-ish, if you will. It's not bad, per se, but it's just not as good as their old stuff. In my opinion, Anette sounds a bit like Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation. And Within Temptation vocals with Nightwish instrumentals and theme just doesn't add up right. I'll miss Tarja. annette sound popish but she does not sound like sharon den adel I'm just saying that she did to me the first time I heard her sing.
Although after listening to "Amaranth" a few times, I've gotten a bit used to Anette's voice. Who knows, maybe she'll start to grow on me...
