my newest piece :'D all done in open canvas and photoshop...
i am not really happy with the hair... i always have problems colouring the hair >_<'
and the re-sized made the lines look wiggly gonk

Really nice proportions and expression there. The only thing that's bothering me is that the colors are very flat, particularly the gray (...black?) of her clothing. I'd definitely add some deeper shadows on her clothing at the very least to give it some more depth. It might not be amiss to shadow some of her skin a little dark too. Some darker shades in the hair (particularly around her neck and shoulders) would probably give that a little more depth too and help it look a little less flat.

You say you want a more natural pose on your current WIP. If you're trying to ween yourself away from using references something that might help is getting into the pose you're going for yourself. I find it helpful sometimes. Even though you can't really see yourself if you don't have a tall mirror to look at it helps to know how that pose would feel. It helps visualize where things fall.

For the pose on the chara with two daggers(?), she looks like she's gonna stealth sideswipe someone! @___@; I'd suggest looking at poses of charas in action games like Tekken or Soul Callibur.
