I actually wrote a paper on this topic. Doctors have found that playing relaxing or familiar music for patients can help them heal. Mentally, physically, and have shorter hospital stays. It's really a hot topic and really interesting.

I about to enter my second year in college studying music therapy! I am so excited to be a music therapist. As one I can work with many different populations such as hospice, elderly, those with mental or behavioral problems. I really want to work with kids 3nodding The thing is, it isn't just about playing music FOR the clients. The most help comes from interaction. Let's say your working with someone who doesn't have great motor skills. You give them a drum stick and teach them how to use it and play a little drum pad and ta da. You are helping their fine motor skills by gripping the stick and gross motor skills by them raising their arm up and down to strike the drum. I did my senior research paper on music therapy, but I keep learning even newer things about it!
