The Bitter Suite
The saga of Sango and Kohaku

This is about the episodes from Season 1 to Season 3 of InuYasha with Sango and Kohaku, done to the music of “Phantom of the Opera.” It’s a ‘filk.’

A filk is a parody of an existing song written on a new theme, much like Weird Al Yankovic's music. Like if you took a Beatles’ song and changed the lyrics so it was about Harry Potter, that would be a filk. I think it would work with anything though: cats, tables, politics, Harry Potter, dancing, or in this case InuYasha.

I once chanced upon a Harry Potter filk site where they had musicals, and that’s where I got the idea for this.

This is my interpretation of the Sango/Kohaku saga, with a bit of cutting and stretching and changing. For instance – if there’s a song that two people sing and it’s sung by one person, just go with the tune. Lots of parts will be moved and most of the songs are completely out of order. If you know the tunes, though, you’ll get it.

Oh, and there are of course spoilers. It IS about InuYasha episodes.

I might build on it more later, too. The ending sort of... isn't there.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own InuYasha or the title of this filk, “The Bitter Suite.” InuYasha is owned by Rumiko Takahashi and “The Bitter Suite” comes from the TV show Xena.

InuYasha Must Die
(To the tune of “The Phantom Of the Opera”)

[As Sango journeys to find InuYasha with Naraku, determined to kill InuYasha before she dies]

SANGO
My heart is filled with rage
At what I hear
My village has been killed
But I won’t shed tears

Instead I’ll use my hate
Against this man
The hanyo InuYasha must die
And by my hand!

[Falls to the ground from fatigue and pain, Naraku offers his jewel shard]

NARAKU
Here, take this shard of jewel
No need to fret
[Mentally] My power over you
Grows stronger yet!

Your hatred makes you blind
To my deceit
The hanyo InuYasha will die
When you two meet

SANGO
[Mentally] I cannot see his face
He’s covered in fur
What’s in the mask he wears?
Perhaps I should deter…

BOTH
[Out loud again]
Your/my jewel shards and my/your hate
In one combined
The hanyo InuYasha must die

SANGO
[Mentally]
Before I’m out of time…

CHORUS
Must die… the hanyo InuYasha!

SANGO
Must kill… the hanyo InuYasha…

-Ends on chord-

~*~

Rescue Me
(To the tune of “Think of Me”)

[Kohaku’s thoughts as his mind is taken over, and later at the village he massacres]

KOHAKU
Rescue me
Rescue me, Sango
I pray you’ll come in time
Rescue me, from this half demon
Who now controls my mind!

Save me from, this evil demon who,
Seeks to use me to get to you
Oh please help me Sango, sister
Please come rescue me…

[Instrumental break]

Mem’ries fade, the thoughts of family fade,
And how I killed them all that night
But I will always try to remember
And against mind control I’ll fight.

I’ll forget the things we’ve shared and seen
I’ll forget about the way things might have been

Remember me, remember me Sango
Trapped within my mind
Rescue me, rescue me sister
Come now don’t waste more time!

Very soon, I’ll forget ev’rything,
My mem’ry and my loved ones too
But I will always try, dear Sango
To remember you!

[Instrumental break. Scene moves to him at the destroyed village from season two. He comes out of the smoke and Sango sees him]

SANGO
Can it be? Is it Kohaku?
*whisper* Kohaku!
I saw him die, How is it he’s alive,
He’s so familiar, is it true?
Oh my dear brother, can it be?
Are you Kohaku?

KOHAKU
Don’t Sango; it’s just a trap you see,
Naraku’ll get to you through me
I fear you will not be able to
Re-scue me Sango.

(The trill/crescendo was cut off because it was ridicules with Kohaku. It just ended the way the rest of the stanzas did.)

[Kohaku runs off, and Sango follows him. They go through the barrier at meet at the cliff.

“Let me see your face.” He takes off the mask and she sees it’s Kohaku.

Kohaku, you’re alive! She thinks. She starts to walk towards him.
]

~*~

Naraku’s Deal
(To the tune of “I Remember”)

NARAKU
[Spoken]Are you happy to see your brother alive?

SANGO
[Stops walking]

NARAKU
[Song begins] Long time no see my Sango dear
What’s the matter, aren’t you going to thank me?
*smirk*

SANGO
[Spoken] What?!

NARAKU
After all I saved your brother
With a jewel shard that’s been planted in his back!
Kohaku’s life is in your hands…

Bring me Tessaiga and I will
Give Kohaku eternal life!

~*~

Damn You
(To the tune of – well – “Damn You”)

SANGO
[Steaming with rage]

Damn you!
Did you think I could be bribed?
You evil demon!
Don’t you underestimate me!

[Tries to attack Naraku, but Kohaku blocks her. Sango is shocked]

Curse you!
What did you do to Kohaku?
Oh Kohaku!
Why do you choose him over me?

Kohaku… why Naraku?

NARAKU
[Chuckle]

I made him forget
He has no mem’ries left of you
Or even of himself…
After all a fighting machine
Needs no feelings, don’t you see
Needs no feelings, don’t you see
Don’t you see…?

Be proud of him Sango
He has killed an entire village
By himself, don’t you think?
He has become a fine slayer
You should be proud of him
Proud of him
Proud of him
Proud of him…

SANGO
[Shouted] WHY YOU-! [Attacks]

NARAKU
[Spoken as he vanishes in a cloud of miasma]

YOU WILL BRING ME THE TESSAIGA!

[After he’s gone]

I will be waiting… Sango.

~*~

Twisted Every Way
(Tune to song of the same name)

[While everyone is asleep in the hut, Sango is thinking about Naraku’s deal]

SANGO
Twisted ev’ry way what answer can I give?
Am I to betray the trust of the man who helped me live? [Looks at InuYasha]
Do I betray my brother and leave him to his fate; become Naraku’s prey?
Do I have any choice he’ll kill me without a thought, along with Kohaku
And yet I can’t refuse! But oh, I wish I could!
Oh god, if I agree, what horrors wait for me, in there, Naraku’s castle?

[InuYasha wakes up and sees Sango. He says he feels bad for Sango, and Sango angrily tells him that Kohaku is not her real brother. InuYasha says that it must still be hard, since he looks exactly like Kohaku. Sango tells him not to underestimate her, and InuYasha says that in her shoes, he couldn’t do it.]

INUYASHA
Sango, Sango don’t think that I don’t care
But I really doubt that you could dare kill your brother!

[Instrumental starts, then is cut short by Miroku]

MIROKU
[Spoken] Be on your guard, we’re surrounded.

~*~

Here We Go
(To the tune of “Down We Go”)

[When Kohaku leaps onto a demon and flies away, and Sango follows him with the Tessaiga]

KOHAKU
Here we go to the castle filled with black despair
Here we fly towards the prison of my mind
To give Naraku the sword, the Tessaiga!

Why did I have to be chained and bound
To this cold and dismal fate?
Now I have to lead Sango
To my master Naraku’s castle gate!

INUYASHA GANG
Track down Kohaku, Sango must be found!
Track down Kohaku, Sango must be found!

KOHAKU
Hunted down by all my friends
Working for the ones I hate
Will I ever make amends?
Or will by then it be too late?

Sango… why? Why?

[They arrive at Naraku’s castle. Sango searches the castle grounds, boomerang held at the ready]

SANGO
Have you gorged yourself at last in you lust for pain?!?
Show me my brother now that I’ve brought you Tessaiga!

NARAKU
[spoken] First, put down the hiraikotsu.

~*~

Past The Point Of No Return
(To the tune of the song of the same name)

NARAKU
You have come here
In pursuit of the one you love
In pursuit of the brother who killed your whole family…
Family…

I have brought you
That you might bring me the hanyo’s sword
The Tessaiga, the sword that you’ve brought me
Now hand the sword over, give the sword to me…
Now you are here with me, no second thoughts,
With the Tessaiga…
The Tessaiga…

Past the point of no return -
No backward glances!
The games we've played till now are at an end . . .
Past all thought of "if" or "when" -
No use resisting:
Give me the sword, and let you brother mend . . .

It’s all the fault of the sacred jewel
By its curse so many die
But people live from it as well
Like Kohaku!

Past the point of no return,
Finish our deal!
Or I won’t release your brother, as you’ve learned…
You’re past the point of no return!

SANGO
You have brought me
To this castle to make a trade
But I won’t give you
InuYasha’s sword
Till you show me… my brother…

[A window glows, Kohaku’s outline is seen for a moment, then all goes dark again]

I have come here
To give you InuYasha’s sword
In exchange you will give me Kohaku
So turn my Kohaku’s
Mind back to normal!
Or else we have no deal!
No second thoughts…
Change him back now…
Change him back now…

NARAKU
Killing me won’t help, Sango
I think you know that
As I said, it’s all the fault of the Sacred Jewel!

You had shards in your village
That why those demons
Attacked your village and destroyed your ken!

Your father’s death, Kohaku’s soul
They’re all because of that cur-sed jewel

SANGO
Stop all this nonsense!
I know you killed… them all!

Just because you coveted the jewel
That doesn’t mean that
You didn’t kill them all, because you did!
You’ve crossed the point of no… re…turn…!

NARAKU
[Spoken] The promise was to exchange Kohaku for the sword. What will you do?

SANGO
[Spoken] You despicable…! What promise?!? THIS IS MY ANSWER! [Leaps at him with sword, fight commences…]

~*~

Remember, Kohaku
(To the tune of “All I Ask Of You”)

[End of Season 2, when they have “rescued” Kohaku from the demon trying to get his shard. Sango is facing Kohaku, talking to him alone. She smiles at him.]

SANGO
No more talk of darkness,
Forget Naraku, dear
I’m here, nothing can harm you
My sword will defend and guard you

[Smile fades]
Kohaku, I’m your sister
Remember through your fears!
Brother, don’t you remember?
One last mem-o-ry ember?

[Thinks]
Say you know me, my brother, Kohaku
Say you’ve finally come back to me
Don’t turn back into your
Inner darkness…
Don’t make me go living without you
Remember, Kohaku!

[Out loud again]

I will be your shelter,
Help you find the light
You're safe, no one will find you
Your fears are far behind you . . .

KOHAKU
All I want are memories,
My past removed of night . . .
And you always beside me
To hold me and to hide me . . .

SANGO
Oh say, Kohaku, that you now remember
Say I’m now at least familiar!
Say there’s one last glowing memory ember…
Say you love me as much as I love you
Please say it Kohaku!

KOHAKU
[Distressed]
Sango, I cannot remember you at all
Your face is not even familiar
Not one of my memories can I now recall…

SANGO
[Sad]
Say you love me…

KOHAKU
[Crestfallen]
I don’t know you…

SANGO/KOHAKU
Why don’t you remember Kohaku?/Why can I not remember you?

SANGO
[Thinking]
I will wait for you to remember me!
One day your memories will be free…

~*~

I Won’t Let You Be Controlled
(To the tune of “Why Have You Brought Me Here.” There aren’t the two parts in this song – just the plain melody. The only time Roul’s whispered part comes in is when Kagome says her one line and Sango whispers the last line. You’ll also notice that only “Why Have You Brought Me Here” is here, and “Roul I’ve Seen Him” is left out.)

[After chasing him through the forest at the sight of Kagome’s hurt arm, Sango faces her brother across an empty forest clearing, sadness in her eyes]

Brother, what have you done?
Oh how could you?
You’re still under his spell
Well now I’m through!

For I won’t let you be
Under control
I’ll rescue you my brother Koha-a-ku,
And free your soul!

KAGOME
[Sitting in her clearing with Kirara]
San-go, don’t do this to your brother…!

SANGO
My god, you’re in his grasp
You’ve not run away
You came to steal our shards
And Kagome slay!

[Becomes angry]
Well I won’t let you be
Under control
I’ll save you my brother, Koha-a-ku…
And I’ll save your soul!

[Whispered]
But I won’t let you go alo-one…

This is wonderful! You have some really beautiful poetry in here and the way it flows with the music is perfect. I'm so glad you kept going with it. (I remember Inuyasha Must Die from our poetry contest) I wish I could hear this performed.

As a Phantom fan, I must say that "InyuYasha Must Die" slightly creeped me out, but it got better as it went on. biggrin I started to cry near the end- I really felt emotion. I swear.
