I have to disagree with both your friends.
Definately one of the greatest movies I've ever seen! If not my favorite, my second favorite film.

If you like war, a lot of blood, and sex combined with half nakie women ...oh you shall enjoy it. Not a movie for the squeemish or those easily disturbed.

[Regal Dementia]

Just saw it a day ago and it was brilliant! The movie was based off of the comic book 300, and homosexuality didnt come into play from what I saw until that hunchback went into the audience room of King Xerxes who was well, Persian. Yes there were 2 sex scenes in the film (easily skipped over without missing any plot) and the battle scenes were pretty good.

I enjoyed it as did my father and quite a few friends from youth group. Excellent visual effects and while it didnt stay 100% true to history it stayed 100% true to the comic book which was part fiction. Overall Id rate it 4 stars. I liked the theme (constant bravery in the face of death / self-sacrifice for the benefit of all / defiance against tyrants).

I dont see any reason (other than the gore, sex, and nudity) not to see it. Plus the line that basically made the movie is awesome,
"Madness? THIS...IS...SPARTA!!!!" *kicks the evil messenger guy into a bottomless pit*
