Its emotive hardcore.
Not a style and not a kind of person.
skinnies,chucks or vans,studs,black,sidefringes,vintage/punk clash style clothes,wristbands,cuffs,piercings,rand colored hair..this stuff doesnt make someone 'emo'.
Labelling people emo,goth,punk,chav,gangsta or otherwise is shallow and stereotypical.
If someones depressed,there not emo,there depressed ******** a goddamn difference.

Emo is about the music,not the look.

actually it did start in the 80's. maybe you remember "rights of spring", the former "death cab for cutie", and "after drive in", and "the juliana theory"? they started emotive hardcore music as a evolution of a new emotional style of punk, since punk was popular back then.
