I noticed something yesterday and I thought I'd bring it up and see if anyone else has noticed this as well...

While considering some bands that I like with amazingly pretty lyrics I did a few searches, and many of them have college degrees. For instance, The Cruxshadows and AFI both have singers/songwriters with degrees and I think you can see that quite evidently in their work..

So I suppose my question is are any of your favorite bands college graduates?

I think a background in solid education can help, though, there are people who are just naturally talented.

Of course you'd need good education to have a vocabulary extensive enough to produce artistic lyrics...
otherwise if your vocabulary is limited to "bitches, ho's, and bling", you're better suited to the limited (and overrated) world of rap.

of course granted a better vocabulary helps, but even without one, think of the words you hear everyday and you use in basic conversation..it far outreaches "bitches," "ho's," and "bling"

xD

A sound education of the English language (or whatever language one happens to be writing in) would certainly help a songwriter.

Though bands such as The Cruxshadows may not use super-complex or obscure language, thier vocabulary seems to be more extensive than that of your average artist. On top of that, thier lyrics are laden with allusions, wether it's the Grecian mythology found in songs such as 'Citadel' and 'Flame', or Egyptian mythology, as found in 'Jackal Head'.

I love thier music. heart

well im offended. You talk about education in the world of music yet you seemed so uninformed yourself.

THe rap you hear on the radio and on tv isnt real rap. Just as the rock and punk you see on tv and radio isnt real punk or rock.

Some of my fav rappers have completed collage. Such as David Banner and Stat Quo. Alot of local collages here have successful and popular free stylin clubs. It requires a master command of the english language and an understanding of rhyme and rhythm.

as for bands that have graduated from collage.
