I've finished up through volume 4, and while it's not canon at this point (I don't think it will be, either, but I don't know -- managed never to spoil myself on this one) I've DEFINITELY been seeing a lot of things that can't have been unintentional on Higuri's part. There is a lot of tension between Chiaro and Cesare -- at one point, Chiaro makes an obvious advance, and it seems that the only reason Cesare resists it is because of the social consequences.
I don't know if I'd call it love. Maybe, on Chiaro's part.. just maybe. His feelings for Cesare seem to go deeper than his protective, brotherly feelings for Lucretia. As for Cesare, I only doubt it because I don't know if, given his situation and personality, he's capable of love for anyone.
Looking forward to reading the rest.

I am currently on the 8th volume of the Cantarella. I don't like unrequited love if I like the characters. It really sucks Chiaro and Lucrecia, I wish she'd just go somewhere. I don't really consider it BL because there isn't much action between Cesare and Chiaro besides them being best friends. -snort- How good a best friend he turned out to be. j/k He can't help he wasn't gay.
