At least for those of us in Canada. gonk

How do you avoid overeating at special occasions ie: where it's traditional to pig out?

we only have that problem during christmas.

i guess you just have to treat it like any normal day and just sort out your portions and not go back for seconds 3nodding

It'll be hard, but I'll try not to stuff myself with food this year. ><

Well I am in American so our Thanksgiving is a ways off but still it seems already the cold is setting in and so are the "comfort foods." I am trying to find a healthy balance. I do not want to hide from my family! However I am doing my best to take a full plate at each family function... with the FULLNESS coming from greens and lean protiens and counting my carbs carefully but without complaint! (I am diabetic). It is working so far and I hope to keep it up through these danger months! And then CELEBRATE in my OWN way, with more health!

I will try to not over eat. Stop when I am full and eat more of the healthy foods than the non-healthy foods. Also knowing my cusin she will bring her dog. So I shall volenter (sp?) to walk him. I will eat a small dessert (only because if I don't my mom will b***h at me and be all "just eat some pie its only one piece") but only after my meal has set.
Christmas time is easy, my family dinner consists of my grandfathers chilli and my family knows I don't eat beef. So if I don't eat much it will be alright.

My mom always suggests to go for more vegetables. They are better for you. Eat fewer potatos [darn them for tasting so good!] As for a bit of pie. It wouldn't hurt as long as you don't get 1/4 of the pie slices. Some sweets don't hurt. Moderation, not remove all together.

Good Luck!

Alright, one thing that's really, really helped me, is that for some on Thanksgiving, you really feel that you haven't eaten enough until you literally CAN'T eat anymore, and what you should do, is:

-Ten minutes before you eat, drink 1-3 FULL glasses of water.
This way, you'll get the 'full' feeling, without the calories. If you still feel hungry after your first (portioned) plate, drink another full glass of water before going back.

It takes some discipline, but remember, nothing tastes as good as losing weight feels.

LOL OH GOD THANKSGIVING! ugh...I'm mexican so we have the big a** family dinner going on and...it's all so delicious. My weakness: Stuffing. I think though...I'll eat and then go to the gym like I normally do. I'll eat small portions...no desserts for me ^^; Then there's christmas...aw crap...where the famous menudo and tamales are made and I love the spicy Tamales!!! >x< oooooh but it's so goood. Not only that people are going to be piling up the gym like crazy....well..at least they start off all motivated and then two days later they give up lol. So it wont be too bad.

Is anyone besides me literally excited and counting down the days for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas? I love these 3 holidays. The weather especially. I live for fall and winter. It's just so cozy to me. Especially when it rains and you can curl up in a blanket with a book, sandwich and tomato soup listening to the rain....I'm a nerd like that lol. And I seem to have gotten off topic. I'll shut up now.

since i doont eat meat, most of the food at special things are off limits to me.

but i remember when they weren't.

before you go up to the table full of food, decide how much food you want, then decide on your favorite foods there and how much calories are in it. try to either cut out the foods with the most, or get a little bit of everything you want so you will have the taste of it but not all those calories.

as for saving some calories when you drink something, try to make sure it is the one with the least, but still tastes good. this way you have more calories for your food intake.

also depending on when you are having the big meal, make your other meals kind of smaller, say if you normally have 1 bagel wth cream cheese, make it a half of bagel or say you have 2 eggs with 3 pieces of bacon cut out 2 pieces of bacon and maybe one egg.

i hope that helps in some way for all of you.

I don't live at home anymore so it isn't a problem anymore really...

But for those few occasions I go home for the holidays, my parents forget I'm a vegetarian or just assume I can eat the meat just that once... Which I mean really... Is lame. So I never have anything to eat.

Saves me a lot of trouble.
