WoW you've put considerable thought into this.
Steel Sterling Ok, here's a nice fanboy (fangirl) question. I'm limiting it to practical considerations-but for any series of Trek. (I'll explain below.) Let's say you were a captain of Starfleet, with considerable experience. (And considerable pull/mojo.) You currently have some say over your next assignment. You're going to captain a ship. (Defiant-class is EXCLUDED from this.) Now, it's got to be a ship in regular Starfleet production and use. (No secret classes or whatevers.) You can set your answer in any official Trek timeframe. (The Original Series, The Next Generation, etc.) The ship's purpose will partly be defined by its spaceframe, and both will affect its crew complement. In other words, each ship will do something related to what it's designed to do, with a staff sized to accomplish that. Military-type ships like frigates will have a military purpose, and be staffed appropriately. Medical ships will have medical staff, and so on. Now, you have enough pull to have some modifications retrofitted to this ship- or added as it's being completed- before you take over. (Within the limits of what the ship can do- you can't make a ship exceed its maximum speed, nor just strap heavy guns all over it. Nothing that changes the exterior, nor the engines, nor requires capacity beyond the current engines.) The ship will be in excellent condition, being newly made or newly reconditioned. Keeping all of that in mind, this is your chance to decide what "your ship" would be like. So, What Trek era would it be? What ship's class would you use? What would its primary missions include? (What do you do with it? Remember that you need to work WITH the class...) What changes would you have made to the ship? Most importantly, what will you name this ship? smile Feel free to post more than one answer, so long as each one is answered fully. (I'll be posting 2 of them eventually, myself.)

The internet has made this sort of fan activity a LOT easier than it would have been before there was an internet. mrgreen
All the "conditions", you noticed, are pretty much "you'd have to stay within what would be potentially allowed in the show or movies." (That's why I couldn't give my OWN ship a cloaking device unless it was obtained illegally and installed without Starfleet's knowledge, which is pretty unlikely.)
Some forms of "fun" require a lot of research or other work to do them. smile

AndyX xXSuperWhateverXx What Trek era would it be? TOS What ship's class would you use? Intrepid or a constitution What would its primary missions include? Long-term missions like "Boldy going where no one has gone before". What changes would you have made to the ship? I'd just put a Holodeck, and have the bridge not look like a kindergardener made it. What will you name this ship? U.S.S. Scarlet Rose an intrepid class ship in the TOS timeline?? i'm aware of an intrepid class in the Enterprise (alternate) timeline, as well as the Voyager timeline. Sterling could you plz link a reference here for that.
Ehh, sure why not? Just because they didn't show it in the TOS timeline doesn't mean it didn't exist. Unless they didn't make this ship until the VOY timeline sweatdrop

Technically, this is a trick question similar to asking about when "the Enterprise" was in use.
"Intrepid was an Intrepid-type starship used by the United Earth Starfleet in the mid 22nd century. The ship's motto was "In Mare In Cælo" ("In the Sea In Heaven").
Intrepid was constructed and placed into service by the year 2153 when it would be under the command of Captain Carlos Ramirez. (ENT: "The Expanse") "
That's an Intrepid-TYPE ship, of which there was a USS Intrepid. There doesn't seem to be an official registry# stated for it in canon. (The first ship of any class tends to share a name with the class, like the USS Galaxy, USS Excelsior, etc.)
Meanwhile, there's the Intrepid-CLASS ships, like Voyager.
"The Intrepid-class starship was a Federation design that entered service in the latter half of the 24th century. The USS Voyager was of this class. "
"Development and construction of the Intrepid-class occurred at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards with the class entering service by 2370. The second ship, USS Voyager, was commissioned in 2371."
So, ships operating in the TOS era include ships introduced before that era (which can be old ships still in use), or ships introduced in that era. Ships introduced before that era include the NX class (NX-01 Enterprise), and an unknown class with an "Intrepid" (unknown registry).
However, these ships were in use over a century before the TOS era ships. The Constitution class ships (like the 1701 Enterprise) and the Miranda class (like the USS Reliant) were in production much later, and the likelihood of using the older ships at this time are very unlikely. Furthermore, they were remodeled (like the 1701-A Enterprise.)
So, for the TOS era, we do NOT have access to the Intrepid-CLASS. The Intrepid-TYPE is far too old to be a viable ship to "boldly" go anywhere anymore. So, let's keep this simple and say a Constitution-class ship, a sister to the NCC-1701 Enterprise, is planned for this.
Let's see about the mission. This ship is a Heavy Cruiser, suitable for combat and general exploration. It's suited for long-term missions of "boldly going where no man has gone before."
So, the ship and the mission profile are a go.
Modifications: 1) Redesigning the bridge. That's possible, you just need to make a practical set of designs. Presuming that's done, that modification is a go.
2) Adding a holodeck. Sorry, this is not an option as stated- the holodecks were not in use until long after the Constitution class was all sent to museums.
HOWEVER, by 2270, the 1701 Enterprise was fitted with (and thus any other Constitution-class ship could have) one of its rec rooms (recreation rooms) as a room with LIMITED holographic projection. It played recorded sounds, could produce winds and temperature changes, and visual holograms. (They could not be TOUCHED.) THAT you could have.
(For those wondering, it did not appear in TOS. It appeared in the cartoon- the TAS- in "the Practical Joker". 3 years of TOS plus 2 years of TAS equals a 5-year mission, for those wondering how that worked. smile )
So, THAT could be used.
Otherwise, you'd need to move up to NextGen era. When the 1701-D Enterprise was new, HoloDecks on ships were a new, cutting edge thing.

Oh okay, thanks! Maybe I'll put in one of those rec rooms you talked about instead of a holodeck like you said. Exactly what year was the holodeck introduced?

Ok, let's see...
ii_CaptainPanda_ii Era: VOY Class: Akira Primary Missions: Anti-Borg & Exploration
Era and ship class are fine. Akira-class ships are the fighter-carrier/missile-platform ships. (Despite the fighters being too big for the bay doors and the bay.)
So, anti-borg is workable- as a missile-platform. Exploration is possible but STRANGE for this ship design. It CAN do it, but WHY it would be tasked is a separate question.
Still possible, so far.
Quote: Changes: Just add the Chain Reaction Pulsar or Transphasic weaponry
"Chain-reaction pulsar?" *checks* That's not canonical Trek, and not even in the novels. That's a videogame convention. Those break canon all the time. So, that weapon is a no-go.
"Transphasic weaponry".....
"The transphasic torpedo was a Starfleet weapon developed sometime in the 2380s in a future alternate timeline. It was designed specifically to handle the Borg threat, with input by Captain Kathryn Janeway and the crew of the USS Voyager.
In 2378, the point to which Admiral Janeway from the alternate timeline had traveled back in time, the admiral introduced Captain Janeway to this technology for use in reaching a Borg transwarp hub accessing the Borg transwarp network to return to Earth. When entering the nebula where the transwarp hub was located, one transphasic torpedo was enough to destroy a Borg cube."
Ok, this is a weapon in ST canon as part of the main timeline (well, as of the end of the ship's journey.)
"According to the Pocket Books novel Greater than the Sum, transphasic torpedoes were in fact kept by Starfleet as the weapon of last resort to be deployed to starships only when all else had failed against the Borg. They were the one and only thing Starfleet knew the Borg had not yet adapted to and for that reason wanted to keep this ace in the hole for as long as possible."
That's possible canon, and it makes sense. After all, Voyager didn't invent all new tech-it adapted EXISTING tech.
Well, the USS Freedom was the prototype of the "Freedom-class" ships, the one-nacelle silly design used in the wreckage of the Wolf 359 massacre by the Borg. It's possible that, after abandoning this design for being too silly, they re-used the name. However, it's less likely.
Quote: The Freedom would have a crew compliment of 150-200 maximum being 500 crew members, mostly science officers. It would be sent on missions to investigate spacial anomalies, and to run initial scans of newly discovered planetary systems.
"The following information of specifications and defenses comes exclusively from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual:
* Production Base: ASDB Integration Facility, Antares Fleet Yards, Antares IV. * Type: Heavy Cruiser. * Accommodation: 500 officers and crew; 4,500 personal evacuation limit. * Power Plant: One 1,500 plus Cochrane warp core feeding two nacelles; one impulse system. * Dimensions: Length, 464.43 meters; beam, 316.67 meters; height, 87.43 meters. * Mass: 3,055,000 metric tonnes. * Performance: Warp 9.8 for 12 hours. * Armament: Six type-10 phaser emitters; two photon torpedo launchers."
For a ship planned for anti-Borg actions, the crew complement specified is far below the safe level. A "maximum" of "200" is below a 25% number used for a "skeleton crew", a bare minimum to fly the ship. That would be 250, and it is VERY inadvisable to use a skeleton crew longer than is absolutely necessary.
Quote: With an event of the Borg attacking it would either use the Chain Reaction Pulsar or the Transphasic Weaponry to help out. It's basically a normal Akira-Class ship with added weaponry.
If you reworked some of the fighter-bay sections, you could add more space for another torpedo launcher and- more importantly, more TORPEDOES.
You could keep a good supply of the standard AND of the transphasic.
