"Ohmygosh, I'm so glad we could find the time to do this Sgt. Moachm!" Psykgi said cheerily as she stepped onto the sparring arena, trusty axe in hand.

There were so many reasons to spar against Hemera, so many good reasons, that Psykgi was surprised to meet so much initial resistance. She'd had to use so many angles, so many. The practical seemed to be the way to go with Hemera -- the need for constant training and practice in the military, the need to know the strengths and weaknesses of trolls both above and below you in rank, the need to know your own strengths, the need to break in new limbs in a combat sense... those sorts of things. Psykgi herself definitely needed these, but her true motivators were, while no less practical, more personal in nature.

She wanted to get to know Hemera, and a sparring match... well, that would give her a lot of information! It wasn't like they were trying to seriously hurt or maim each other, and it would blow off some steam. It really was a win-win-win sort of situation in Psykgi's mind, even if (maybe especially if!) the tealblood proved stronger or more adept.

"Go ahead and go first --" Psykgi invited, settling a little uncertainly into a stance, "I want to practice some defensive moves!"

"Hm..." Mera still didn't like the situation she found herself in, but she couldn't fight it anymore. When trolls pulled the 'military training' card, it was hard to say no. Maybe she could get it over with quickly.

The tealblood nodded at the request. She took her own stance, and threw her boomerang. A military troll had to be prepared for long-range attacks, she supposed.

Psykgi had been right to try out her new stance, because it was not working out very well and gosh -- it would have been horrible to discover that in the middle of battle? Also, for someone so resistant to sparring, Hemera sure hit hard.

Psykgi recovered from the blow and attacked Hemera -- the best defense was a good offense, right?

"I suppose so," she allowed. Being in closer quarters, Mera was given opportunity to lash out with her boomerang to drive Psykgi farther back. It did double as an ice pick, after all.

Psykgi rarely went anywhere without her brooch -- she'd been intending to leave it out of the sparring match, but it was still there in her pocket, and her first instinct when she was under attack was to activate the brooch and call to her lusus.

She felt more than a little embarrassed at the sudden onrush of cockroaches that took the damage for her, an onrush that vanished as fast as it appeared. She tried to press the offense to cover up her embarrassment, but her attack was lacking...

Bugs! Taking Psykgi's hit? Perhaps her lusus, then. Still, the sudden shock of it all made Hemera take a couple of steps back.

You couldn't get rid of Ma'am. Psykgi wasn't even sure that the void of space could get rid of Ma'am. Not that she'd want to! Of course not!

Either way, that was an opening, and Psykgi wanted to show that she could take it.

"I see." Hemera felt fortunate that she could leave Pagoni home, but not everyone would feel as suffocated by their own lusus. Further, a bug swarm could be useful for infiltration. She would have to note this to Eostre later.

The axe came down again, hard, and Mera moved to duck. Instead, she started to slip. The combination made her ice up out of reflex. She caught herself, and the ice took the blow. Now she had to make space. Mera swiped her boomerang at Psykgi's hand, hoping to make her drop her weapon, and then stepped to the side.

Keep smiling, keep smiling, keep smiling. that was Psykgi's mantra. She hated getting hurt, but she knew that she had to keep that smile up, stay cheerful, stay friendly.

That was how she survived.

Even though it hurt like hell.

Hemera managed to evade Psykgi's next strike, hindered as it was, but Psykgi kept that smile up. As if her next move, as if some trick up her sleeve, was right around the corner... or as if she was having fun, which she was.

Mera successfully dodged Psykgi's attack, and a stroke later, activated her leg thrusters to put even more distance between them. Leeroi's engineering continued to prove to be impressive. With that, she tossed her boomerang, panting a little as she did so. What a workout! How did Psykgi manage to keep a smile up so easily? Mera focused too much for something like that herself
