Roknhin and Jalarus were sitting on a crate in the back of one of the store rooms, killing time between shifts in the kitchen. One guitar leaned against the crate opposite, while the other sat on Jalarus's lap. The instrument he'd given Jal was older, the same one he'd had since childhood. He still remembered when he first got it, a gift from an older harper, back when people still thought he had potential.

It had been a while since he brought out that guitar, but he was on a quest to find Jal an instrument he liked. They had already been through pipes and violin without much success. He was hoping this would be the one. So far, though...

He frowned slightly as the chord came out a little off. "Lemme see?" he said, holding out a hand. He messed with the knobs on the side of the headstock as he played a few chords, but it sounded fine. "Hmm.. No, that seems to be in tune." he said, handing it back. It was a poor harper that blamed their instruments, anyway. He was probably just a bad teacher.

"Here.." he scooted closer, moving Jal's finger to the right spots on the frets. "Don't be afraid to push a little harder too. I know you're a big guy, but you're not gonna break it." he chuckled. "There.. Try that." he said, shifting back once he was satisfied that he was in a good position.

Jalarus felt a bit hopeless, and more than a little foolish. The brown haired man watched as Roknhin made some adjustments with the guitar, trying to not look as deflated as he felt. He knew that his friend was just trying to help -- but the large man honestly wasn't sure anything was going to be the right fit. It wasn't the instruments fault, it was Jalarus himself -- he just had no talent. If it didn't involve physical labor he just wasn't good for it.

Maybe this was just a waste of Rokhnin's time.

Jalarus wasn't unaware that their free time was precious. His friend could be with anyone else at this moment, doing anything he wanted; instead, he was choosing to suffer through this mess of awkwardness. The man wanted a drink, which was a pull that he felt more and more. Part of him knew he'd better hold off, but another part just didn't have the heart. The Weyr was full of wine, and he wasn't the only one to drink away their sorrows. Maybe later, after Rok and he parted ways.

When the other strummed the guitar, and played the right chord, he gave a small grunt. "'S'probably my fat fingers," he explained, even as the man handed him back the guitar. "Ain't much good with small things." And that was true enough. His calloused hands felt big, and burly, especially when Rokhnin helped adjust his hold on the instrument. It wasn't that his friend was exceptionally small or delicate, but Jalarus just felt like a brute in comparison.

Still, he took a firmer hold of the instrument upon his friend's instruction, and gave the chord another -- though still tentative -- strum. it was a little better in sound, but not much. Possibly from said fingers inadvertently holding down one too many strings.

Kharin would have been good at it, he knew. Not Jal. "I dunno," he sighed. "Yer' the talented one between us," he confessed. "I ain't got much of that." He looked down at the guitar, as if it held some sort of magic. Rok at least played it well. Sure, it was practice and experience, but it was also just raw talent. As far as Jalarus understood, not everyone was meant to be a crafter. Certainly not some son of a exiled man turned merc.

"How long you been playin' anyway?" He asked, hoping maybe if he got Roknhin talking, he'd have to look less like a fool.
