      Solo Class: Military History Basics
        This class is filled with trolls pouring over transcripts that would be dusty with age, if they weren't being printed out from a large central intelligence grub-bank on one side of the room. Records of past battles, from various points in troll history, in various formats, litter the tables in this room, marred with underlines and highlights and circles. Along with the transcripts, mapping tools are provided, from gridded paper to various measuring devices, to the almighty pen. It seems that your job is to interpret the old records and draw out how the conflicts went!

        Mechanics
        Trolls must choose a campaign (with description, from list) and draw a minimum of three maps (per troll, if done in a group), based on the writing to show the terrain and troop movements at various parts of the battle(s). Each map must be posted separately, with the rp of them creating the map accompanying it. Maps are judged based on accuracy to the writing rather than artistic merit. Mspaint, photos of hand-drawn maps, etc, are perfectly fine.

        If you would like to add your own battle to the list, feel free to pm it to the mule! Make sure it's in a format that works with this class, see the battles below for examples.

        Battles:

        The Ballad of Asteroid 36007 Chase
        Prosper long our noble queen,
        Our lives and safeties all!
        A woeful hunting once there did
        In Asteroid 36007 Chase befall.

        To drive the Terrifying Space Leaping Dappled Prance-Beast with lusus and horn
        Eeaurl Percey took his way;
        The grub may rue that is unhatched
        The hunting of that day!

        The stout Eeaurl of Four Fronds
        A vow to himself did make,
        His pleasure in the vast reaches of space
        Three star-dates nights to take.

        The chiefest space-beasts in Asteroid 36007 Chase
        To kill and bear away.
        These tidings to Yearle Dougas came,
        In Military Space Port 3B.7 where he lay:

        Who sent Eeaurl Percey present word
        He would prevent his sport.
        The blueblood Eaurl, not fearing that,
        Did to the asteroid resort,

        With fifteen hundred guntrolls bold,
        All chosen trolls of might,
        Who knew full well in time of need
        To aim their plasma barrels aright.

        The gallant spaceships swiftly flew
        To chase the fallow space-beasts:
        On Monday they began to hunt
        Ere space-sunlight did appear;

        And long before high noon they had
        An hundred fat space-beasts slain:
        Then having dined, the drivers went
        To rouse the space-beasts again.

        Eeaurl Perce to the galley went
        To view the slaughter'd space-beasts;
        Quoth he, Yearle Dougas promised
        This day to meet me here;

        But if I thought he would not come
        No longer would I stay
        With that a brave young gentletroll
        Thus to the Eeaurl did say:

        Lo, yonder doth Yearle Dougas come
        His ships in anti-weapon laser barriers bright -
        Full twenty hundred Seadweller ships
        All flying in our sight.

        Show me, said he, whose men you be
        That hunt so boldly here
        That, without my consent do chase
        And kill my fallow space-beasts?

        The first troll that did answer make
        Was noble Perce, he
        Who said, We list not to declare
        Nor show whose trolls we be.

        Yet we will spend our dearest blood
        Thy chiefest space-beasts to slay.
        Then Dougas swore a solemn oath
        And thus in rage did say:

        Ere thus I will out-braved be
        One of us two shall die!
        I know thee well, A highblood thou art
        Eeaurl Perce! so am I.

        Our Alternian guntrolls activated their port-side laser cannons,
        Their hearts were good and true;
        At the first flight of armor piercing plasma sent
        Full fourscore ships they damaged.

        At last these two stout highbloods did meet
        Like captains of great might;
        Like mained purry roar-beasts wud they laid on load
        And made a cruel fight.

        They fought, until they both did sweat,
        With ships of tempered space-adamantium,
        Until the blood, like drops of rain,
        They trickling down did feel.

        O yield thee, Perce! Dougas said,
        In faith, I will thee bring
        Where thou shalt high advanced be
        By Her Majesty our True Overlord And Empress May She Live Forever;

        Thy ransom I will freely give,
        And this report of thee,
        Thou art the most courageous knight
        That ever I did see.

        No, Dougas; quoth Eeaurl Perce then,
        Thy proffer I do scorn;
        I will not yield to any other captain
        That ever yet was born!

        With that there came an energy blast keen
        Out of a malfunctioning spaceship,
        Which struck Yearle Dougas's ship to the core energy reactors,
        A deep and deadly blow;

        Who never spake more words than these
        Fight on, my merry trolls all!
        For why? my life is at an end,
        Eeaurl Perce sees my fall.

        Then realizing he killed a seadweller, Eeaurl Perce took
        The dead troll by the hand (metaphorically);
        And said, Yearle Dougas! For thy life
        Would I had lost my land!

        O Messiahs! my very heart doth bleed
        With sorrow for thy sake;
        For sure a more redoubted seadweller
        Mischance could never take.

        A knight among the seadwellers there was
        Who saw Yearle Dougas die;
        Who straight in wrath did vow revenge
        Upon the Eeaurl Perce:

        Sirhug Montgo was he called,
        Who, with a laser cannon full bright,
        Well mounted on his turret perch,
        Flew his ship fiercely through the fight;

        And past the blueblood's ships all,
        Without all dread or fear,
        And through Eeaurl Perce's ship then
        He thrust his rightful blast of space-plasma.

        This fight did last from break of space-day
        Till setting of the space-sun;
        For when they rung the evening bell
        The battle scarce was done.

        And the Lourde Maxwel in like case
        Did with Yearle Dougas die;
        Of twenty hundred seadweller ship lasers
        Scarce fifty-five did fly;

        Of fifteen hundred blueblooded alternian battleships
        Went home but fifty-three;
        The rest were slain in Asteroid 36007 Chase
        Under the greenwood planet.

        Next day did many widows come
        Their matesprits and kismeses to bewail;
        They washed their wounds in brinish tears,
        But all would not prevail.

        Their bodies vaporized or lost in space
        They bore their memories with them away;
        They kissed their dead (metaphorically) a thousand times
        When they were marked as deceased in official military files.

        Messiahs save our Empress and bless this land
        With plenty, joy and victory,
        And grant henceforth that foule debate
        'Twixt all highbloods may cease!

        The Great Massacre of GALACTAR 17
        Hour 1: Battlefleet A enters the ring-belt of Ultronimox from the south east, moving into a c-flank position to sweep north along the ring belt.
        Hour 1: Battlefleet B moves down the ring belt from the north-west, skirting Ultronimox and forming a v-point spear attack to pierce in a south-eastern direction and flank A from behind.

        Hour 2: The Great Space Worm drifts in from the north-east, and enters the ring belt of Ultronimox, where it settles down on top of an asteroid, midway between the two fleets.
        Hour 2: Battlefleet C moves in from behind the Space Worm and takes up a v-point spear facing south-west towards the worm, in anticipation.

        Hour 3: Battlefleet A moves north, Battlefleet B moves south-east, Battlefleet C advances south-west, all towards the Space Worm.
        Hour 3: Space worm does a dimensional shift, leaving this plane of reality.

        Hour 4: Fleets A, B, and C converge at the middle-eastern part of the map and destroy each other - due to tragic mind-altering toxins left behind by the dimensional shift that caused all the other ships to appear as giant worms.

        Graowl Tyiger's Last Stand
        Graowl Tyiger was a Bravo troll, who lived upon a space-barge;
        In fact he was the roughest troll that ever roamed at large.
        From Chittentown up to Busthind he pursued his evil aims,
        Rejoicing in his title of, 'The Terror of the Mountain Range.'

        His manners and appearance did not calculate to please;
        His coat was torn and seedy, he was baggy at the knees;
        One horn was somewhat missing, no need to tell you why,
        And he scowled upon a hostile world from one forbidding eye.

        The cottagers of Four Fronds knew something of his fame,
        At Hemisect Civisect and New Hemisect people shuddered at his name.
        They would fortify the grain consuming cluckclaws-house, lock up the silly honking water-caboose,
        When the rumour ran along the shore: GRAOWL TYIGER'S ON THE LOOSE!

        Woe to the weak fluting peckbeast, that fluttered from its cage;
        Woe to the pampered long-haired yipmonger, that faced Graowl Tyiger's rage.
        Woe to the bristly long-nosed bouncing squeekbeast, that lurks on foreign ships,
        And woe to any troll with whom Graowl Tyiger came to grips!

        But most to trolls of different blood hue his hatred had been vowed;
        To trolls of different pupating location and blood hue no quarter was allowed.
        The redbloods and the greenbloods regarded him with fear--
        Because it was a greenblood had damaged his missing horn.

        Now on a peaceful early fifth-perigee night, all nature seemed at play,
        The tender moon was shining bright, the barge at Military Dock 436, south entrance, lay.
        All in the balmy moonlight it lay rocking on the space-tide--
        And Graowl Tyiger was disposed to show his sentimental side.

        His bucko mate, Grumeb Uskine, long since had disappeared,
        For to the Alcohol Consumption Station at Four Fronds he had gone to wet his beard;
        And his bosun, Tumble Brutus, he too had stol'n away-
        In the yard behind the local YTMA he was prowling for his prey.

        In the forepeak of the vessel Graowl Tyiger sate alone,
        Concentrating his attention on the Lady Griddl Eboone.
        And his raffish crew were sleeping in their barrels and their bunks--
        As the greenblood came creeping in their traditional and socially acceptable greenblood attire.

        Graowl Tyiger had no eye or ear for aught but Griddl Eboone,
        And the Lady seemed enraptured by his manly baritone,
        Disposed to relaxation, and awaiting no surprise--
        But the moonlight shone reflected from a thousand bright green eyes.

        And closer still and closer the greenbloods circled round,
        And yet from all the enemy there was not heard a sound.
        The lovers sang their last duet, in danger of their lives--
        For the foe was armed with toasting sawblades and cruel carving flamethrowers.

        Then Giylle Beeurt gave the signal to his fierce verdant horde;
        With a frightful burst of greenblood-enjoyed noisemakers the greenblooded trolls they swarmed aboard.
        Abandoning their greeblood attire, and their remaining greenblood attire,
        They battened down the hatches on the crew within their bunks.

        Then Griddl Eboone she gave a screech, for she was badly skeered;
        I am sorry to admit it, but she quickly disappeared.
        She probably escaped with ease, I'm sure she was not drowned--
        But a serried ring of flashing steel Graowl Tyiger did surround.

        The ruthless foe pressed forward, in stubborn rank on rank;
        Graowl Tyiger to his vast surprise was forced to walk the plank.
        He who a hundred victims had driven to that drop,
        At the end of all his crimes was forced to go ker-flip, ker-flop.

        Oh there was joy in Hemisect Civisect when the news flew through the land;
        At Busthead and Chittentown there was dancing on the strand.
        Unclean pest-like squeek-beasts were roasted whole at New Hemisect, and at Four Fronds Space Docking Station 4365,
        And a day of celebration was commanded nowhere as Graowl Tyiger was a military hero.

It really couldn't be more obvious that Cerpin did not want to be doing this. He wanted to learn strategy and leadership, sure, but doodling maps and reading poems were incredibly boring in his opinion. Tevini was better at this sort of stuff, couldn't he just leave it to her? But the redblood had insisted that he had to put more effort into the less flashy less fun parts of this shared dream of theirs if he wanted it to actually succeed. Fine, he'd try a little bit.

That was how they ended up here, looking over various confusing texts and transcripts while he nursed a bottle of mango juice and contemplated if the queen's lusus would be less painful than the The Ballad of Asteroid 36007 Chase.

"This is so confusing. Why did people write like this?" He liked the arts, he liked drama, but he was completely lost at deciphering this stuff. Thumbing through more of the poems, he tried to pick one that was easy but not so easy that Tevini would tell him off again. Graowl Tyiger's Last Stand, sure why not.

"Look, I drew a-" He dissolved into a fit of giggles at his pink forest drawn to resemble a bulge and the look on her face at his immature artwork.

"Because they-" The studious troll beside Cerpin opened her mouth and paused as she glanced over his sheet. Immediately she scowled at the juvenile behavior and averted her eyes back to her own.

"-hate you." The girl grumbled, finishing her thought. An avid reader, Tevini spent most of her time reading nonfiction, technical works. She did occasionally, however, enjoy a book of poems. They weren't especially useful but she appreciated the thought of wordplay and careful choices. Each poem was like a little word puzzle. Tevini liked puzzles.

"Try to take this seriously. Byakko is depending on us." The redblood nudged her partner. "Look at mine." It was a rendering of The Great Massacre of GALACTAR 17, Hour 1. No frills and no fuss, she'd drawn the most basic and understandable outline she could. Even Cerpin should be able to get it in a second with his short attention span. She was going to have to work with him on that if he was going to become the proud commander of their ship that he needed to be.

"Look at it closely. We're sure to encounter battles like this once we launch." Tevini wasn't sure how far along the Royal Space Program was but they had more resources and money to throw at it. The Space Elevators had proven the queen's interest in space as well. They needed to hurry and learn all they could. Who knew how much time they had left?

"Well space battles are obviously different. Your map looks alright I guess." Cerpin said as if he somehow had the experience to have authority on this. Which he did not. Still, fake it til you make it and all that s**t. He rolled his eyes at Tevini's strict scolding and started drawing up another map. His poem was filled with dramatics that were difficult for him to interpret. He would give it a little more thought this round than he had the first though.

Adding a few more dots to notate the enemy positions, he slapped the paper down in front of the redblood again. Tevini might be smarter than him at science but he thought he was holding his own okay in terms of strategy.

"I think I did better this time. What do you think?" It was still somewhat sloppily drawn but there had been some care put into the drawing.

"Much better." Tevini nodded approvingly. Cerpin's attitude could still be improved but it was progress. She grimaced at the still present large pink bulge but knew that it was an artistic choice she wasn't going to be able to make him stop. At least the important parts were there. Perhaps there was hope after all.

"See? You're smarter than you pretend." The redblood stated. Her partner liked to act the part of an entertainer, a sleeze. Underneath his facade, however, Tevini knew there was more to him. It was part of why she'd been willing to become a team with him. His earnest side was admirable, she just wished he would realize it. The times he tried at something beyond his typical flashy tricks, those were the times that made her proud that she'd stuck through all the other crap. Not that she hated his sparkly side either, it just riled her up a lot.

"Here's my next one. See how there's a blind spot for Battleship B?" Tevini pointed out, finishing her second map. She gestured to how The Great Space Worm was in a difficult position for Battleship B to notice. It was part of the set up for how this battle ended that made it interesting to her. The battle was a warning to watch your radars and try to keep monitoring the situation early on before things took a turn for the worse.

"Hidden enemies, it's a scary concept." Cerpin nodded, looking over Tevini's map. He didn't like the idea of chasing space worms around asteroids. It sounded like a pain in the a**. But in reality, he supposed it was probably better than what they'd actually face. Royalist ships trying to shoot them down and all that. He tapped the side of his head in thought.

"Skip to the end, I wanna see how this turns out." He ignored the comments on his intelligence with a faint purple flush on his cheeks. He didn't like people calling him out on his persona and true potential. It was easier to hide behind the mask of a fool than to put his serious side out to the world for judgment. It felt good to be praised but horrible to be ridiculed. As a prideful spoiled purpleblood on a pedestal, it was hard to swallow how deep the fall from grace could be.

He returned his attention to sketching the final scene of his own assignment. Focusing on the failure of Grawol Tyiger and the triumph of the army was hauntingly applicable to the rebellion's own circumstances. Would they be another one of these fallen enemies of the state, immortalized in lore as just another foolish attempt against a glorified tyrant?

The very thought made his skin burn.

"This is how mine ends. He ******** dies." Cerpin traced the fallen troll's marker on his map. "We're not gonna end up like him." It seemed the assignment had done its job well. He was starting to analyze and think about how to avoid the pitfalls from the past and how to claim advantage in the future. It had also lit an aggressively resistant spirit inside him to the thought of becoming another one of these scrolls.

Cerpin's impatience made Tevini smile. He was starting to get into this. Sketching beside him quietly, she enjoyed the comfortable silence. The purpleblood liked to fill up rooms with sound but it made her feel happy that he didn't always need it with her. Sometimes she thought he did so in order to distract his mind from unpleasant thoughts. That was how her interest in engineering had started, truthfully. It'd been something else to focus on to stop thinking about all the different ways her life could end here. But she no longer needed to fill every thought in order to feel safe. All she needed was-

"This is how mine ends. He ******** dies."

Eyes widened.

"We're not gonna end up like him."

It was astounding how quickly he turned despair around. The bite of his words had sounded so bitter and angry for him to channel into determination. Her heart pounded from having braced herself for a tense discussion that had diffused before it'd become anything. She didn't know what to say that didn't sound cheesy and so she simply nodded, her gaze locked with his.

"Or them." She added, placing her final map down in front of him. It was a tragic ending, with The Great Space Worm shifting planes and then leaving behind mind-altering toxins that caused the three different battleships to hallucinate. They'd collided with each other while chasing the worm. While the words of the poem did not sound especially poetic with no flowery language or rhymes... the content itself was very poetic.

"All three ships pursued the worm until they destroyed each other." It was a grim metaphor. The rebels had a lot to consider. Their actions could force the queen to make a dangerous decision, a possibly inevitable decision. Tevini bit her lip at she considered many ways their plans could go wrong.

"We need to be careful not to lose sight of what's important." Her's was sitting right next to her. She'd do everything she had to in order to protect him.
