It was a bright and lovely morning, warming up with a bit of a fresh breeze coming off the sea. The sort of day you spend lounging in the grass or propped up against a tree. In addition to a tote bag of supplies, America had brought a picnic basket complete with blanket to sit on and goodies made by other people.

Sitting cross-legged across from the other two, the girl pulled out a notebook to log her attempts and the results.

item creation mechanic
Players must roll 1d10 in each post where they attempt to create their attuned item. The d10 determines the success or failure of their attempt. Four successes are required to create the item; each post must be filled out.

roll results
1-- A success! Your item has taken a little of your desired trait into itself.
2-- A failure. You have blown up one of your less expensive reagents and caused yourself minor damage.
3-- A failure. Your item has proven resistant to one of your reagents; you will need more power or more reagent to make it work.
4-- A success! Your item has taken a little more of your desired trait into itself.
5-- A failure. Your item has cracked, and must be repaired.
6-- A failure. You have blown up one of your most expensive reagents and done yourself moderate damage. The reagent must be replaced.
7-- A success! Your item has taken a little more of your desired trait into itself.
8-- A failure. You pushed too hard, and the item rejected your attempt to imbue it with its traits.
9-- A success! Your item has taken a little more of your desired trait into itself.
10-- A failure. You didn't push hard enough, and have given yourself a headache.

America's Notes
springy piece of balsa wood and some hemp : zilch and a headache

Fortunately, she'd never stopped carrying around some ibuprofen, even after warging stopped being so painful in this new world. Above them, Mr. B called down that it hadn't been shiny enough to be valuable anyway.

America's Notes

yew (tree of life, transformation) + lead slug (transformation) = working

This time, she'd had a bit more of an idea of where her magic would be moving along the frame, along with taking the time to choose two pieces of material that had compatible symbolism attached to them.

Her power eased along the stick of yew as she bent it, slow and steady. As the ends met, the slug's shape began to stretch over them, fusing the two together and then slowly, slowly, wrapping itself around the ring.

Holding up with a critical look, Mr. Bitterberry shouted and enthusiastic, Shiny!

"Well, I think that's one." Reaching up, America wiped a bead of sweat off her brow.

since they're making a one-off and not the Important One, I'm going with each success as a test frame for them to try with in the next thread

Leila chose to follow her instincts and use an egg she'd retrieved from the chicken coop that morning. If she'd learned anything from the sigil crafting in the Void and other magic she'd witnessed or heard about since, having a clear concept of what should work and why it should work was important. In her mind a magical frame was 'something that could become anything'.

How to make it work was where she got stuck. She ended up staring at the eggs and feeling silly for several minutes until remembering an anecdote from Eve one Easter weekend about how eggs were traditionally decorated into pysanky in Ukraine -- and they were believed to obtain magical qualities in the process.

After setting out to buy and melt some beeswax, Leila began using it to draw symmetrical divisions around the egg and fill them with somewhat clumsy spiraling patterns. She hoped the handiwork there wouldn't matter. When the time came to dye it, she instead held it in a completely empty bowl and willed her power up as a liquid analog to submerge it in.

No liquid actually appeared, but there was a ripple effect over the egg as the wax rearranged into perfect symmetry and seamless patterns, and the shell bloomed over with rich color.

"s**t," Leila blinked at her handiwork. "I guess that did it."

Kaleb watched curiously as the ladies incorporated magic into their crafting, feeling it with his own ability so he could attempt the same. He was especially impressed with the egg, and was glad the professor had gone with her initial ideas so he had the pleasure of seeing what became of it.

Finally he selected a cedar branch of his own, a safe place to start with someone who felt more at home in green outdoor spaces, and a length of stripped copper wire. Gently bending the branch into a loop wasn't too hard, but trying to spread the copper around it's surface like what America had managed took much more strength than he expected.

He paused to take a breather, with a newfound admiration for the skills of his companions.

The teen turned back to his own unfinished metal-wood ring after a couple minutes, and summoned up as much energy as he could to coerce the copper to do his bidding. Apparently his strength was more than equal to the task, the sudden overload of magic caused the whole thing to explode.

Kaleb set aside the smoking ruin, nursing his burned hands.

He liked the ring idea, but this time he decided to try something else. Taking another branch of cedar and a large piece of quartz, he gently pulled the branch around the stone's circumference. Then he began to encourage new growth from the fresh wood, pulling new tendrils out to securely hold the quartz in the center of the ring.

He didn't recognize the accumulation of magic inside the quartz crystal itself until it was too late. The whole crystal shattered, spraying his hands and arms with painful shards. The multitude of little lacerations might have been the end of his attempts, but the ladies were quick with the first aid while he had his eyes tightly closed.

After a few minutes Kaleb was determined to continue, although still somewhat dizzy and unsettled by the earlier accident. Trying it again, with the glass lens of a magnifying glass instead, he wasn't able to apply the magic as accurately in his flustered state. The cedar twisted and curled out of control, but at least the lens wasn't accumulating magic and posing an explosion risk.

Plucking the lens from the squirrels nest of wild cedar sprouts he had created, Kaleb tried once again with a new branch. He was careful and more focused this time around, able to ignore his injured hands and encourage the cedar to wind around the lens, and then create just enough little branches to secure it in place.

Tada~ His first successful magical craft.

America's Notes

bamboo (freed o spirit, regen, renew, flexibility) + sea glass (wisdom, strength, perseverance, clear up miscom) = try again

Carrying around a small first aid kit all the time was one of those habits that inevitably paid off, time and again. Seeing the success of Leila and Kaleb each finding different paths to the same end, America felt her confidence in their ability to Do This wonderfully bolstered.

Which was good, because her next attempt failed. The thin bamboo shoots fell apart instead fusing with the pieces of sea glass dropping down onto the blanket.

Taking a deep breath, America tried again.

She goes slow again, and it takes longer, because with the tetrahedron she'd gotten ambitious. Going from a ring to a the more complex object was definitely more than a baby step. But it paid off in the end, the glass fusing the the pieces of bamboo with a a graceful pattern more ornate than anything she could manage with a pencil in her hands.

Holding it aloft, she crowed happily until she noticed that the sun was starting to set. "Oh crap, that'd taken...." Giving the other two a sheepish look, America suggested, "Y'all wanna do the binding tomorrow morning?"
