"Yeah. Well, there was the first sigil - then you guys made another one and came over here. Leila showed me some of that." He paused, thinking. "So first sigil, second, then the third sigil, which is the charter. Not in that order, though. And it seems like everything is twisting around itself and we're stuck fixing it."
"Someone said we have until November."

"That is a lot to try and fix before November. And if we don't get it fixed, we'll just... repeat?" Kaleb frowned, it sounded like magic had gotten tangled in one big knot the way Horace was describing it, and it would take more than just a bit of patience to untie it properly.
He let his chin rest on one hand again, leaning on top of the open book. "You are so calm about these scary things. It's really amazing."

"We'll repeat - and we won't remember." Horace shrugged again. "No point in getting worked up over things. They are what they are, but we can try to change them, you know? I dunno how yet, but..."

That made it sound incredibly simple. Kaleb stared suspiciously at Horace for a moment.
"It's because you look for ghosts, that you can be so calm about stuff, right?"

He laughed. "No, that's not quite it. But when you reach a certain point in life, most things just aren't... scary anymore. You learn to roll with it because there's no other option." It might not have been exactly healthy, but Horace had found a sort of zen.
"It's okay to be worried, though, Kaleb. You'll be fine."

Kaleb smiled a bit at that, Horace was talking like an old lady who had half a lifetime to hone their sense of priorities, not a college student. Their own ages couldn't have been far apart, but Horace had definitely come out the wiser.
"Maybe worrying is okay," he agreed, "but not when it gets in the way of the important stuff. Like fixing the broken magic stuff. Or at least passing exams. I'll try not to worry too much."

"We'll figure it all out." He glanced down at his textbook. "Maybe we should actually study, too."
