Smerdle rolled 3 4-sided dice: 3, 1, 4 Total: 8 (3-12)

prompt one

You've arrived in your new era, and you have noticed three issues immediately.

Firstly: You have nowhere to stay. (How long will you be here? Who knows.)
Secondly: You have nothing to wear. (Your clothes definitely don't fit in.)
Thirdly: What are you going to do for money? (It's not immediately obvious, you know.)

In order for your character to progress to the next phase, you must roll three four-sided dice and write a solo or do an RP wherein you address these three problems. Your dice rolls will determine how well you do, and will enable you to pick one to three advantages, depending on how many points you end up with. (Higher numbers are better and indicate a better stealthing into the society!) When you're ready to move on, please quote your moderators and one of them will drop in to give you the information you need to prepare for your next phase.

Please feel free to RP as much as you like within your era. :>

You may assign your dice values to each slot as you will. So if you roll a 1, a 4, and a 3, you can put the three on whatever you like--it doesn't have to apply to the third set of concerns.

What sort of lodgings do you acquire for your stay?
1. You know, I've always liked camping. (None)
2. It's fun to stay at the YMCA. (Youth hostel/homeless shelter)
3. I scrounged up enough cash to secure a rented room. (Hotel/rented room)
4. I've managed to find a comfy bed with a kindly family or group. (Rented room, free)

What sort of clothing do you find to help you blend in?
1. My clothes are fine. (None)
2. I found a clothesline. (Stolen off a clothesline; low-class or poorly meshing)
3. I scrounged up enough cash to secure a pretty decent outfit. (Purchased; mid-class or slightly against social mores)
4. Someone took pity on me and helped me blend in more. (Free; easy to pass)

How are you going to earn some cash?
1. I don't need it. (None)
2. Busking! I'm good at it! (Low income)
3. Some under-the-table work. (Middleish income)
4. I've always fancied myself a con man... (High income)

Every three points you earn can be traded in for a bonus. The options are: one of your characters' powers can be re-earned, a +1 bonus to persuasion rolls, a +1 bonus to athleticism/combat rolls, or a +1 increase in one of your situational rolls (so securing better housing, clothing, or job).

Rabbit had followed the conversation. It was a lot to be proud of, in his estimation, considering that a handful of months ago he hadn't known a thing about the otherworld beyond that it was there and it occasionally wanted to kill him. And yes, while there had been a lot he hadn't grasped (who in the ******** was William Ozymandias?), the most important part had been go through this door to save the world, and that he could do. Also, Sunday hadn't noticed the cigarette he had snuffed out on her floor, so that was nice as well. Or maybe she had and she just didn't care.

He measured his breathing as he approached the door, nerves drowning in waves of adrenaline, and as he stepped through he thought of Liv and Sy and Nev and Oroh and p***k, even Jim. He hoped, beyond anything he'd ever hoped before, that they would be all right while he was gone.

His first thought, upon emerging on the other side, was that he had gone insane. Everything in front of him was so sharp and familiar that he felt instantly overcome with nostalgia, and yet nothing was quite right either. He was home, somehow back in New York after falling through a hole in Massachusetts. This place was old and new at the same time, comparatively pristine subway cars filled with seats laid out like they had been when he'd been a kid, punks with square, vintage boomboxes without a scratch on them, deliberately retro hairstyles worn as if they were the norm. Which they were... in the 80s.

A second train pulled into the Christopher Street station, and when the doors opened this time, a crush of people oozed toward him, the force of their synchronous movement carrying Rabbit up to the street. Circumstances were even weirder in the light of day, but he was almost ready for it, having quickly come to terms with the whole time travel thing. He'd barely been aware there was a world outside of his own suburban home the first time he'd lived through this, and he was looking forward to seeing more of it this time around, even if... was that billboard... floating? Not quite, but he wasn't about to stand under it for very long either. He hurried on, giving the strange sign a suspicious look.

Even though this city remained his first home, this version of it was nothing like what he was used to. Still, shady neighborhoods were shady neighborhoods no matter when you were, and Rabbit was sure one of them would have the resources he needed to blend in. He walked north, all the way up to Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, approaching the safest looking thug he could find and asking if he had any work. The man glared, his brows furrowed in confusion, and then he sighed at Rabbit's insistence, nodding at the door behind him. It was at the bottom of a flight of only four steps, but the sun still didn't reach it. As soon as Rabbit knocked, the door swung open and he was dragged inside.

Under the flickering light of a naked bulb, he met Sanchez and Pete, a couple of guys who were really good at selling knock-off watches but not very good at watching for the cops. They gave him some clothes that were far too large, a couple of bucks for some food, and an order: stand on the corner and whistle when the police drove by. Rabbit used the snack money to buy cigarettes, and for the rest of the afternoon, he let his new friends know when they were about to be busted. They gave him a little more money and directed him to a shelter at the end of the day, promising more cash if he worked a longer shift the next morning. It was strange, to say the least, and he wasn't sure how engaging in petty crime was going to help stop Sunny, but it was a start.

While Rabbit works his corner, he notices the comings and goings from the building across the street - one shopfront is a 24-hour deli. The other shopfront is a wig shop. And in between is a door that ALL SORTS of people come and go from, disappearing up and down the stairs at all hours of the day. The upstairs windows are blocked with thick, velvet drapes, but, after careful observation, it would not be incorrect to come to the conclusion that it is some kind of bar.

Late one night, a pair of men leave the building and lock the door behind them. They cross the street and wait on Rabbit's corner for the light to change, and... it's not really eavesdropping if they're not being careful, right?

"Kind of Mr. Tailor to sponsor all the booze," says the shorter man. "Now we've just got to hope people show up."

"Time will tell," says his companion. "Be patient. Thursday will be here soon enough."

The light changes and they cross the street.

You think you might know where you can get a free drink.

You are now invited to the wake at Andromache! See you there!

Before posting into the new thread, please roll 1d4 in your character's record. This determines how much damage you take from the glitch. Glitch damage cannot be healed, and must be worked around.

Subtract your roll from your character's health total, and add the effect posted below to your post header.
1. Disorientation. No stat changes.
2. Migraine. -1 to all combat rolls.
3. Light physical damage. -1 to all combat rolls.
4. Severe disorientation. -2 to persuasion rolls.

So, a character who rolled a 3 would have a new maximum health total of 22 and a -1 debuff to combat rolls. A character who rolled a 1 would have a new maximum health total of 24 and no debuffs.

You will have an opportunity to undo the debuffs in the future.

You may also reclaim one more power at this time.

This comes off your total from the last roll, so if you have 24 health after last prompt and you roll a 2 now, you'll have 22 health total.

You will have an opportunity to undo the debuffs in the future.

It did hurt, but not right away. And Rabbit was ready for it, watching as his skin went from mostly whole (the scratches from the explosions at Andromache notwithstanding) to ow, that's a lot of blood in a matter of moments. He pressed his fingers to the cut, squeezing his lips together at the sting, and looked Temp's way as she performed the same service for a number of others.

"Thanks," he murmured with a bit of a nod, leaving her side to crouch near the sigil. He had watched the girl with the glasses draw it there, had seen it morph into something more, and when he reached toward it now, he couldn't help the giddy tingle of pride that bloomed in his chest as he touched it, leaving a thick red smudge across one side of its trunk. When he closed his eyes, he could picture their symbol emblazoned on a thousand t-shirts. It was perfect.

He didn't linger long, somehow confident that the blood and the casting didn't have to happen simultaneously, and not wanting to clog up the space. Rabbit shuffled a few steps back, palm compressing his wound, and tried to clear his mind of the things he didn't need.

renard time

With family already on his mind, Rabbit might have more quickly assumed that this sudden sacrifice would be beneficial had he known the man's connection to this mess. As it was, he didn't recognize Renard, and he had no idea he was Sunny's father until he said as much. Hadn't someone been talking about body parts or links to casters or whatever?

"Maybe he's like Heliodora's foot," Rabbit said, his voice a whisper even though he'd meant for it to carry. One shoulder rose in a minute shrug, then he nodded vaguely at America's suggestion and got back to focusing.

Olivia. Sywyly. Neverain. Oroh. His mother. Jim. The people in this room. His magic. Ezra. Ashdown, both halves. He pushed his other thoughts away again until those were all that remained, then constructed a triangle in his mind that floated over the bloodstained tree and keys: three people standing at arm's length with one in the middle. Principals. He hoped he was doing this right.

The first was that kid, the one with the dark hair and the frantic, starry eyes. The one whose double had been up on stage back in 1989, elegant and troubled. The one who clutched that notebook and read from it like all of their lives depended on what was inside. And maybe they did. With all of his heart he needed to, he'd said, and Rabbit believed him.

The second was the cop, Shun. He was stable, knowledgeable, a protector. He got stuff done. Rabbit didn't know the half of it.

The last was Temperance, cutter and bandager of arms. She was a protector too, though after the fact. A healer. Someone who wanted to help all the time without realizing that sometimes that wasn't possible. He felt a little like he owed her. Not that envisioning her as one of his three was any sort of payment. It felt like a punishment, if anything. Maybe if they both made it out of here alive, he could work up the courage to give her what she wanted.

The being in the center was Sunny. He hardly knew her at all, but he was still under the impression that beneath it all, she was who they were here to fix. He stood stock still, vulnerable as he fed his magic to their symbol.
