CRYPTIC CRYPTOZOOLOGIST
CRYPTIC CRYPTOZOOLOGIST
A girl who lives by the books. Well, only if they're about cryptids. Jinxi's brain soaks in a thick vat of all things cryptozoology and she can rant and rave for hours about the greatness of Bigfoot or Nessie. Unfortunately, it is all she knows, and the prospect of any other social interaction—even something as simple as asking the time—takes the greatest effort to succeed. This has left her with an insecurity that closed her off from others, and an awkwardness when interaction is warranted. Jinxi just doesn't know how to act around people, and this confusion has left her at a crossroads as to who she really is.
MOVIN' UP, MOVIN' OUT
Jizabel made something of herself—moved up from her bed-hopping days, moved into an apartment, moved forward in life—all for the sake of the baby girl in her belly. Never did she think that eighteen years later, the child she was wishing the best for would become a good-for-nothing. Jinxi dropped out of high school her sophomore year when the teasing became too much, going so far as to hermit herself from the world. She wasted the next three years away of her life on online forums and cryptozoology books. Jizabel put up with it half out of love, and half out of a hope Jinxi would open her eyes and turn her life around.
That day never came.
Well, mama dearest couldn't take it anymore, and when Jinxi turned eighteen, Jizabel threw her out with her books, a change of clothes, and $200 to her name. When banging on the door and pleading for an hour to be let back in came to no avail, Jinxi hitched up her belongings to hit the long road to becoming a well-adjusted adult (or something akin to one). Unfortunately, this is easier said than done when talking to others chokes her up and her knowledge doesn't extend beyond what a Tsuchinoko is.
At first, Jinxi tried to make the best of her situation by looking on the brighter side; yes, she was without a place to call home now, but certainly there'd be a ragtag group of eccentrics to take her in and make her one of their own! That's always how it happened in the movies! Well, reality isn't that nice, people aren't that nice, and the bite of not knowing anyone hit her harder than she realized.
She has tried to cope by seeking comfort in her books; rereading her favorite entries and going over what she knows. Yet, when this proves futile, she turns to the ears of her companion, Nancy Tucker, a white shorthair that hangs out in her duffel bag. Sure, she knows the stray only sticks around because Jinxi's sweet on her with food, but the girl's glad to have something listening on the receiving end of her sighs. Unfortunately, this kind of comfort isn't extended to other people of Ashdown, and she is prone to innumerable social blunders and long, awkward pauses when talking. Doubled with her tendency to mill around the state forest, and she draws more than a few questioning glances.
Her regular day-to-day excursions consist of the fulfilling the necessities of life—food, water, warmth, a roof over her head, and most important of all, money. During the day she's usually wandering around town with her eyes glued to the pavement for pennies or poking her head in alleys or trashcans when no one is looking for a thrown out meal, even napping in the local cinema when she can afford a ticket, and at night, she calls the forest her home and is usually curled up at the base of her tree using her duffel bag as a lumpy pillow. Unfortunately, this lifestyle change has taken its toll on her, and pushed her mind into a pit she doesn't have the strength to climb out of.
PERFECT PAGE
Whenever Jinxi thinks of a cryptid, she can open a book and it will land on the starting chapter or page about it.
ANYTHING ELSE?
+ Eighteen years old.
+ Of Hispanic descent; doesn't know a lick of Spanish, though.
+ Appearance inspo; hair should have a very light yellowy tint as she is a platinum blonde.
+ Her sense of style is awful and she pretty much wears anything that is clean. The sloppier and more mismatched the style, the better. Outfit inspo.
+ Has a very sour opinion of school and school settings; going so far as to shut down at the mention of anything related to her education.
+ Her scope of human interaction is very limited, so it is unknown how she would react to flirting or romance.
+ Jinxi has a noticeable stutter, but she can talk pretty evenly without it coming out. It is only during swells of emotion that it can really jumble her speech.
+ She's the most awkward when comforting someone; she doesn't mind being a shoulder for someone to lean on for support, but don't expect any soothing words from her.
+ She pushes up her glasses when something piques her interest.
+ Her birthday is Valentine's Day.
+ Has a white shorthair cat named Nancy Tucker that hangs out in her duffel bag. Yes, you must say her entire name.
* Expanded/revised her entry from the character contest a bit. Original post.
