Melancholies

Springtime Teenager

Stepping through the portal was rather mundane. The streets of Ashdown looked about as normal as they always had; it was dark, well past evening, but cars were trawling by and late night stragglers were meandering about the sidewalks. The portal itself had spat the both of them out in a derelict alleyway of sorts, which didn't seem to bother Shiloh all that much.

The only thing that sucked was that they were both sopping wet, but Shiloh had lived through a lot worse, so he'd live through this. He was quick to pull his phone out, huffing when it was (naturally) soaked, but still somehow functional anyway despite the busted scream, half working charger port, the list went on...

He sent a text out, sighing as the water messed the keyboard up, but he seemed to get the message out anyway. "You made it okay?" He looked over at Kaleb, "Uh, not to be weird, but I can see you home if you want. Less you think you're okay?"

It felt vaguely nostalgic, like when he met Jamie and walked him home all those months ago. He wasn't the most selfless person, but he had a soft spot for the wild eyed wibbling types.

Kaleb looked as though he hadn't expected to make it back on one piece. His hands were still gripping the handles of the shopping bag far too tightly, and his shoulders were nervously hunched forward as though awaiting something awful. When he realized it was no longer raining, he cracked his eyes open to peek at the new surroundings.

"We're back..." He said, his voice sounding surprised. A slight tremble started in his hands, but Kaleb couldn't tell if it was from the cold, damp clothes, or just the relief of being in the right world again. It was probably both.

"I'm okay," the freckled teen said shakily. He didn't entirely sound okay, but there was some little amount of determination in there, like he was going to try and be okay anyway. "I think I can get home on my own."

"Yeah? Good for you." He offered Kaleb a reassuring sort of smile, not at all missing the way his voice shook. "That's the kinda stuff you gotta push yourself to do. Bein' strong ain't about having no fear, but s'about pushing past the fear even though it's right in front of you're face."

Oddly poetic there, Beaumont. But he believed in it so he spoke it.

"Try not to catch a cold. Oh, and you probably shouldn't tell people about Otherworld. Might think you're crazy." He wrinkled his nose up like he was going to sneeze, but didn't, "'Less you can tell they're magic, and then s'cool. There's a surprising number of us out there. You don't gotta deal with this stuff on your own—but it is dangerous." He had no idea why he was rattling off advice, but he started and figured he might as well keep going. At least, he sure wished he had someone to give him the down low when he started to experience magic. Jamie too.

"Anyway, see you 'round. Try to keep from walkin' in there again, yeah?" He took a step, ignoring the way his sock squelched inside of his shoe. Jamie was going to kill him for coming home like this. "S'been real."

Kaleb nodded, he would try and keep going even with all the fear, and would try not to catch a cold, and would avoid talking about his magical realm-hopping experience in the wrong company. Sometimes he thought he was going crazy, so it wouldn't take much to make other people wonder about his mental state.

And he would definitely try not to walk into that place again. If he could. If it were even possible to try.

"Thank you, for helping out and everything," Kaleb said, raising one hand in a timid wave. When it came to words expressing his gratitude, he could only find the barest minimum, and hoped it would be enough. Then he quickly turned in the direction of his apartment, suddenly desperate for the reassurance of peaceful reading.
