Nathaniel is the type of person who always wants to do everything on his own. Asking for help is a struggle; he believes he can only do things well and right if it's done himself, not out of arrogance, but out of a sense of personal pride. Highly intelligent, he works hard to educate himself and present himself as a resourceful, reliable individual but often feels overshadowed by those around him.

Nathaniel's family is not exactly a well-to-do sort of family. An alcoholic, deadbeat father and an unsupportive mother has lead to a myriad of problems in Nathaniel's life, including the fact that his parents are not above going around conning people out of money. They've always struggled when it comes to finances, but Nathaniel's mother and father have taken it too far, and as a result, his father has been jailed for fraud. While his mother remains on her own, Nathaniel is old enough to live by himself, and has worked extremely hard not to let their mistakes and manipulation affect his appearance or his reputation - though this doesn't always work. This mostly leads to a general wariness and caution around people, as Nathaniel keeps a very tight lid on his history and doesn't want others to know about his humiliating parentage - but it also clashes with his overwhelming desire to make friends and become a respectable member of society. He struggles a lot with letting go of the fear of judgement and letting people get close to him, but he is no way antisocial. Polite and curious, he wants to be friends, it's just a matter of letting himself relax.

Tall, green-eyed and sandy haired with lightly tanned skin and freckles; lithe and limber, not skinny but not muscular either
Dresses very carefully, keeps all his clothes very clean and tidy - he tends to wear sweater vests and sweaters a lot with jeans and teeshirts in the summer
Almost never wears shorts just because he's never liked them
Has always wanted a pet, but was never allowed one as a child
Works two jobs to afford his crappy little apartment - one as a janitor at a local office building, the other as a math tutor
Said apartment is extremely organized, but lacking in decoration or personal affects; everything is very sparse
Takes online college courses and is majoring in Calculus with a minor in History
A big nerd for books and studying in general; he loves learning
Gets everywhere through biking or skateboarding or walking because he can't afford a car
Hoards Snickers bars for when he needs a pick-me-up
When he's thinking, he drums his fingers against his leg, a habit he's never noticed before
Wears reading glasses and tends to forget they're on his face
The one decoration he has in his apartment is a series of plants, as he's always had a love of nature
Has always wanted to go camping but never got a chance to growing up
