            Personality ❀

An enthusiastic mixture of curiosity, budding intelligence, and amazement at the world around her, Athera is a troll poised to grab life by the horns. Despite knowing her swamp home affords her superior protection, a definite plus for a mutantblood, she wants nothing more than to travel and explore the furthest reaches of Alternia. Her main goal: learn all there is to know about their planet's beautiful, bountiful flora. It's doubtful she'd ever choose to leave Salamire Outpost for good, but her dreams are full with thoughts of taking extended trips to gather both knowledge and specimens. 'Extended' is a faraway aspiration, but somenight she's positive she'll get the chance.

Until then, a resourceful Athera makes due with what the swamp provides. You'll rarely hear her complain, though, it's honestly quite a lot! The largely natural environment of the Initiative's home base supplies countless things for them, from food to shelter and more. It's a treasure that deserves to be cherished and protected. If Athera notices someone wasting natural resources, or taking them for granted in any way, she'll jump down their throat faster than they can blink. She will not hide her passion when it comes to conservation. She will, however, take the time to inform those she perceives as simply ignorant about what they're doing once she's had a moment to calm herself. Should they show no willingness to learn, only then will they truly hit her s**t list.

That protective instinct isn't limited to Alternia's ecosystem, however. Each and every one of the trolls making up the rebellion are important to Athera, special and worth protecting in their own right. But just as she sets high expectations for herself, she expects all members to pull their own weight when it comes to the organization and the maintenance of the Outpost. Layabouts and excuse-makers will quickly lose her favor. Breaks are fine, fun and games are awesome, but everyone has to put forth effort eventually.

Trolls she's formed an emotional attachment to will always come first, though, even above the goals of the Initiative. Athera's commitment to these particular souls is fierce, but sitting in that position is also a double-edged sword. Interpersonal relationships are a tricky business for Athera. The more she cares for someone, the more she's prone to growing jealous and absolutely bratty if their attention is stolen by someone else, even if that someone else is yet another troll she cares for. She plays favorites like nobody's business and can be downright selfish and possessive of trolls as easily as she is of her personal affects.

Despite those bratty qualities, she generally means well, and spends quite a bit of time thinking up ways to help or take care of her pitied ones. Since gardening is a hobby she holds close to her bloodpusher, it was only natural when she began trying to share it with her hivemates. In a vase, piled in a bowl, or even just plain laid out on a table, Athera chooses only the most visually pleasing or fragrant of her flowers and spreads them to nearly every nook and cranny of the treehive. Living far off the beaten path, rebuilding and restocking and patrolling night by night, it can all be so stressful. Surely if the hive smelled sweet and refreshing, it would make returning home after a long night that much more rejuvenating.

It was this simple attempt at kindness that began to nurture an interest in more solidified forms of aromatherapy. Flowers alone were a powerful tool, but with time she worked on breaking down pieces of her garden, searching for just what made them so delightfully potent. Experimenting produced two vastly useful components, extracted natural oils and dried flowers crushed into a fine powder. Athera is no pro with either yet, but patience lends itself well to trying various mixes and seeing what blends exquisitely and what just stinks.

Of course, plants can be used in much less friendly and beneficial ways, as well. Though she may not initially look it, Athera is extremely vindictive when crossed, and her urge to seek revenge can be intense. While it takes time and real effort to get on her bad side for keeps, once you're there, it's hard to go back. Even the most obnoxious or belligerent trolls are given a multitude of chances to see eye to eye, unless they touch on a particularly sore spot, but Athera won't be walked on. Continuing to act poorly after a few pardons with no signs of an effort towards cleaning up their act would land most anyone in hot water with her.

In that case, with pride swollen to arrogance, Athera decided early on that your average, run of the mill payback wasn't enough. She needed something unique, something that would stand out and stick with those who wronged her. While she hasn't quite figured out how yet, she'd love to eventually cook up some sort of sleeping potion or sneezing powder equivalent. Plants, don't fail her now!

What breakthroughs she does manage to make are a source of great pride for Athera. Big or small, every discovery is significant to her, and you can bet by the end of the night she'll have told anyone and everyone who would listen all about it. Athera fantasizes about sharing her findings with the rest of Alternia, as well, and strives to both make life better for everyone and set herself in the spotlight at the same time. She hopes that despite the stigma of her blood color, or hemoanonymity at current, she'll be respected and recognized for her talents.

The hemospectrum is an utterly confusing concept to Athera. With so many questions and so few answers, it both piques her curiosity and upsets her at the same time. It would be so much simpler to outright reject it; she's a mutant, an abomination to the outside world. They rebuke her, and in most cases would have her culled, so she should tear down their concepts in return... But why? Why does the hemospectrum function the way it does? Why does red sit at the bottom? Who decided it wasn't actually the top? Who chose roles for each caste? Could it be changed? How many trolls truly believe it a necessary structure in the first place? Is it actually necessary?

Purplebloods sit at the top of the traditional chain of command, yet her pale shade of the very same color doesn't fit what is likely a long-dead troll's concept of socially acceptable. Athera just doesn't get why. Having been taught to judge on action and character, not physical features, she thinks herself and other mutants—be they blood mutants, winged, or otherwise—no different from any other troll at surface level. Despite a great pride in herself, Athera doesn't consider her unusual trait, something she has absolutely no control over, anything special. In fact, a part of her can't quite fully hide behind the wall of her self-confidence when it comes to worrying whether or not she'll be treated the same way by the world outside the swamp. It's small, but it's there.

Often these inquiries hound her, spurring her on in search of a truth she's not sure she'll ever find. If blood color comes up in conversation, you can be sure Athera won't shy away from it. While she's not nearly foolish enough to reveal her own color, even among members of the Initiative, she is willing to field questions about her hemoanonymity if others offer the same concerning their hue or their understanding of the hemospectrum.

            Strengths ❀

Protective ✦ Extremely watchful over those she cares for, Athera would jump into the line of fire in word or deed to defend them. While she'll also look out for anyone who needs it, especially the underdog in a given situation, she's first and foremost concerned with trolls she's emotionally attached to. Whether they're wrong or right, she has their back, no questions (usually) asked. She's also wholeheartedly protective of the rebellion's natural environment and is quick to berate anyone who takes natural resources for granted.

Patient ✦ Everything takes time. From growing flowers to making friends, nothing is instant, and Athera understands this. With a low tolerance for shoddiness in any aspect of life, she'd rather spend an extra hour on something than end up pitching a poor result in the trash. Even so, not everything turns out perfect the first time despite all caution and due diligence. Athera is willing to try and try again to eventually reach her desired outcome, and as long as someone puts forth legitimate effort, she'll extend this enduring patience to nearly any troll.

Experimental ✦ Doing things the same way over and over is just plain boring! Athera loves to experiment, especially with her hobbies. Why grow traditional flowers alone when you could grow hybrids, too? Why grow only known hybrids when you could fool around and make your own? Her experimental nature lends itself well to finding fresh solutions to age old problems, as well. Knowing that with time and effort she'll wind up at the Point B she's looking for (or even an amazing Point C she wasn't quite expecting), Athera isn't afraid of thinking outside the box and trying new things. Any and all failures are only temporary.

Focused ✦ Once she's got her nose to the grindstone, it's difficult to sway Athera from whatever it is she's gotten into. Pinpoint focus means distractions rarely touch her and accidental mix ups while experimenting are few and far between. With a strong follow through, starting a project means inevitably finishing it, regardless of whether she is forced to break from it, though. Prioritizing what should be done first, second, or otherwise is an important step in ensuring everything comes to fruition, as Athera hates leaving anything incomplete.

            Flaws ❀

Possessive ✦ In Athera's mind, there's a strong emphasis on what belongs to her with little to no distinction between objects and trolls. My toy, my friend, my mama... Whatever she considers hers, she'll fiercely hoard away from others for fear of being separated from it. Jealousy abounds when someone garners attention she feels should be on her, even if said recipient is someone she legitimately cares for. And heaven forbid someone try or succeed in stealing one of her belongings. Athera's patient nature frays quicker than usual if after one or two requests the item isn't returned.

Vindictive ✦ Making it onto Athera's bad side takes doing, staying there is a walk in the park. Once slighted enough to really get upset, that notion settles in her chest, refusing to clear. Despite how much it continues to irk her, she'll mull over those bad feelings for nights on end and it won't take long before agitation turns to anger and a thirst for revenge. They should feel as bad as she does, after all! Most of her retaliation is prank-tier at best, but Athera isn't afraid to push the boundaries of what is and isn't playfully acceptable.

Expectant ✦ Athera may be ever patient, but that patience demands perfection. Expectations run high not only for others, but in every one of her own endeavors. Disappointment, failure, strife... all acceptable mid-game outcomes, but the final conclusion better be the best of the best in her eyes, no giving up, no copping out. She lays heavy judgement on those who make endless excuses or try to worm their way out of something they've started and often winds up disliking them for nothing more than their lack of initiative if they don't mend their ways. Even in cases where failure is the final, inevitable conclusion, it's difficult for Athera to separate this inevitability from an innate flaw in whoever reached it. The incredible sense of disgust that comes with a personal defeat is enough to send her into a tantrum for lack of a better way to manage the blow to her self-confidence.

Pretentious ✦ Thinking you're hot stuff is one thing, knowing you are is another beast entirely. Athera is the poster child for self-confidence that borders on the extreme. She takes great pride in her skills, discoveries, and accomplishments, but that alone isn't enough. She wants everyone to know what she's done and to understand just how significant it is. Sure, she'll support someone else's goals, but she'll just as quickly tell them her achievements are more important and her level of skill is higher, even when they aren't. Not to mention her overconfidence can easily get her in trouble when she steps just a little too far without considering her own limits.

            Byakko Mawiya ❀

With mutant blood comes the demand for an unusual living situation, one Athera surprisingly isn't the first to have found herself in. Her lusus, Byakko Mawiya, is another troll as opposed to some sort of creature, like the majority of their fellow Alternians. Much the same as her, Byakko is a mutantblood, and Athera feels a sense of solidarity in their shared situation, one that's only grown into genuine care and pity with time.

About the only sore spot marring Athera's perception of her 'mama' is jealousy. Though it was against her will, Byakko's revealed blood color appears accepted by a good number of Phoenix Initiative members. Acceptance of her uncontrollable trait is something the young lavenderblood yearns for, and having been barred from revealing her blood color by her lusus until she's older, it sometimes leaves a sour taste in her mouth as she's forced to sit in silent hemoanonymity. Respect for Byakko and, admittedly, general survival instinct overrule Athera's urges to ignore this guideline.

Beyond that, Athera is deeply attached to Byakko, to the point she'll often try to hog her attention if they're in the same room. This is especially true when Maneki and Cynril are around. Her feelings for her 'big brothers' edge on the pity-hate variety, and though it's mostly pity, her bratty tendencies sometimes overshadow how much she legitimately cares. Still, Athera would defend Byakko, Maneki, and Cynril with all the passion and stubbornness of her lusus herself if the situation called for it.

If Athera did have a regular old lusus, though, she's pretty dang positive they would look like this.

            Salamire Outpost ❀

A home grown associate of the Phoenix Initiative, Athera lives in Salamire Outpost, sharing a hive with her lusus, Byakko, and any other members of the makeshift family. With all the unused rooms available in the hollowed out swamp tree they call their home, she saw fit to take over more than one, allowing her space for her respiteblock and garden room respectively. Situated near the base of the tree with the others is her respiteblock, and though it acts as storage for all the odds and ends she's collected, as well as her sleeping quarters, she's rarely found there. Instead, Athera spends most of her time at the very top of the hive in a room much larger than her respiteblock. With a large window overhead to bring in natural sun and moonlight, it's the perfect space for her ever-growing garden, where one can find countless plants in all shapes, sizes, colors, and scents. It's here she also runs her experiments and keeps all her supplies for her ventures into aromatherapy and beyond.
