One, two, three. All of them were there, all but one. Kalani. Were was Kalani? She began to worry, usually Kalani was the first one who would return home before the sun would begin to rise. But now he was the last to arrive. Where could he be?

"Where is your brother? Where is Kalani?" She inquired of her other children. Perhaps they had seen him that night and knew where he was.

She was tired, so very tired. Her sleep schedule had fallen to ruin in her attempt to teach herself to be the best healer in the history of her lineage. A goal made even more challenging by the fact that she had no mentor to guide her, no knowledge on which to base her healer lessons upon. Lately her entire method had hinged only on trial and error, something she wasn’t necessarily comfortable with but had no other choice. As she walked slowly back toward her home with her paws dragging behind her she hardly noticed her mother’s frantic demeanor after her siblings had gathered beside her.

It took a moment for her eyes to adjust and for her ears to fully soak in the lilt of concern in her mother’s voice. Kalani? Come to think of it she hadn’t seen him grouped in with her other siblings. A jolt of discomfort shot up her spine as she began to search for her brother as well. It wasn’t like him to stray far from the den, and especially when it was about to be daylight.

Spinning around she looked out over the direction from which she had come in an attempt to see the slightest smudge of blue but to no avail. “Kalani!” She called out; a chill in the back of her mind telling her that he would not answer. Something was definitely wrong. Could he still be chasing moon moths? Or dodging sandworms? It would be strange for him, but at this point she was willing to believe anything. “Maybe he is still out playing mama…” She fought hard to keep the panic and uncertainty from her voice. “I can check and see if he is around our usual play spots?” It was becoming a little harder to breathe but she kept reminding herself to stay calm.
