The bone scribe’s heart felt light for the first in a very long time as she lay stretched out beside a singing stream soaking up the warmth of the sun. Though days like this reminded her of when she met Haru and was faced with her first taste of the cruelty this world has to offer, she no longer let it dampen her spirits. Now she was only reminded at the pleasure she found when first realizing that she was alive and that this wondrous world was made her home by a kind and benevolent deity. Certainly there was cruelty and darkness but, for now, she was untouched by that and her wounds had turned to scars.

Lorilie had also made the healing process go more smoothly. Jendara still couldn’t believe it had only been a month ago that she first met the strange nantlil and had shared in a rather awkward conversation with her. She giggled to herself at the memory of them fighting for hours to get that tool put together. Even though it was tedious and at times frustrating she would not have traded those moments for all the world, for it somehow repaired both her and Lorilie as well. They both found what they had been desperately searching for that day, a close friend who accepted them despite their oddities. A family.

That singular bone whose small voice rang out over the others was right about Lorilie. Though Jendara was still convinced it was just a matter of good timing on the bone’s part. She had indeed met a pleasant stranger and very well could have been crowned with a laurel of lilies with how happy she was feeling now. Having someone under her care had changed her as well. She wasn’t as impulsive or quick to anger, she took her time formulating what she wanted say and even adopted Lorilie’s contemplative manner. She wanted to be someone Lorilie could look to for guidance for, of the two of them, Lorilie was a bit more estranged from the rest of the world.

This thought brought a smile to Jendara’s lips but it was quickly erased when she thought of the bones. Someday she would have to tell Lorilie about them. She would have to share the purpose of a bone scribe with her and see if she would like to be a part of that….or if she would turn her back on the bones and Jendara forever. This thought drained the heat of the sun from her pelt and had her squeezing her eyes shut. She knew she would not be able to keep her out of the bone room forever, and that one day she would need to explain if she ever wished to truly be accepted by Lorilie. But…she was afraid.

She feared both for the safety of the bones and for herself. The crushing loneliness and deep despair she had plummeted into after her meeting with Haru was not something she wanted to go through again, and he had been a complete stranger. Jendara had come to know and appreciate Lorilie for everything that she was, what would she do if Lorilie would not do the same? She felt herself begin to quiver and shook her head violently as a result. “No.” She whispered firmly. Thinking like that would only drag her down faster.

Looking over her shoulder toward the maw of the cave she debated whether or not today would be the day to reveal everything to her newfound friend. It was either that or she wait until Lorilie stumbled upon the ever growing pile of bones that she still had yet to sort out. She could only imagine how she would react. It would only make matters worse if she did not tell her the secret she had been keeping. With a sigh she flopped over on her side and cringed. “So much for a lighthearted day..” She grumbled. She knew she would need to do this in order to become someone Lorilie could admire and see as a mentor, but that did not make the reality of the situation any easier.

She began to find reasons to procrastinate such as needing to finish the shelving and having someone around to ensure their home was not taken from them, but that came to an abrupt end. It would not hurt her any less for Lorilie to turn her back on her now than if she waited for months and it happened then. In fact, the longer she spent with Lorilie the more adjusted she would become to having someone constantly hanging around. She needed to tell her today, doing otherwise would only cause both of them more pain than was necessary. The heaviness in her heart threatened to pin her into place but she managed to bring herself to her feet and walk toward the cave regardless.

This would not be easy, but something within her told her that nothing worthwhile ever would be. And, though she was dragging her paws, she found herself standing in front of the cave opening before she knew it. Her legs turned to jelly and a pit opened in her stomach but she entered anyway and called out. “Lorilie,” she squeaked a bit unsure, “I need to talk to you a moment.” Lorilie would definitely know something was up, Jendara was not doing a great job of hiding her concern. In this instance it was really rather unfortunate that she was so easy to read when feeling stressed or upset.

Clearing her mind of noise and focusing only on what she needed to do next; Jendara puffed out her chest and awaited a response from Lorilie. She took a brief moment to formulate exactly how she would go about telling her, but otherwise just attempted to keep from shaking too visibly. “Weaver give me strength.” She prayed under her breath. “I beg you, please don’t take this one from me.” She begged quietly, her hair echoing against the rock for only a moment before vanishing into the atmosphere.
