Gotta run. Gotta get away. Can't stop or she'll catch me.

Leoncio repeated this to himself over and over as he darted around the large area, unable to hide with his dark coat in the sea of green as someone equally as bright chased after him. The cause of his distress was quite obvious, as a small animal dangled from his mouth and his eyes flashed with fear. He had not thought this through. Not at all. He had let his stomach decide his actions while his head had screamed for his legs to stop moving forward, but he hadn't listened. Not until he had realized his mistake far too late and began running. Now he was trapped in this large, grassy area while something quite terrifying chased after him. And with good reason. Not that that mattered to him right now. He just wished for them to tire quickly before he did, so he could continue running and get as far away as possible before he consumed his prize.

"Keep running," came a sweet voice behind him filled with with the sneer that was probably plastered upon the owner's face. "You better pray you don't tire." It was coupled by a little laugh that sent a chill down his spine.

Yup. He deeply regretted his mistake in taking that pretty B'alam's lunch.

Amaia had been enjoying a peaceful day without any complications. Which wasn't saying much. She always did. Since she had come into the world, she had been alone. Blissfully alone. Where most would perhaps become lonely after a few days, Amaia had enjoyed it. With no one else to bother her or demand things of her. She could go where she wanted and do what she wanted. Who was going to object? No one. The votes were always one-sided.

That was until he had crossed her path. Or, to me more precise, crossed her path and stole her dinner. How stupid. Did he think he'd get away with his catch? Her catch? What arrogance. Clearly he didn't have the skills to hunt on his own or else he wouldn't have touched hers right from under her nose. Or maybe he was just stupid.

Amaia was close on the thief's heels, keeping pace with him perfectly and not tiring. From back here, it was difficult to tell if he was. She suspected he would sooner. Than she would pounce. And he would be sorry.

"I wonder how much stamina you have," the Fire nantlil teased from behind him, imagining the fear in his eyes as he realized she was keeping up with him.

Leoncio could feel himself tiring. His lungs were beginning to grasp for air in little gulps. His speed didn't slow, but it was only a matter of time before he couldn't keep going any longer and she would catch him. Than what? Were there cannibal B'alam in the world? B'alam who ate the flesh of others of their own kind instead of the hoofed prey out in the forests or the ones who roamed the grasses in groups for safety. Trees provided enough coverage and obstacles for animals like deer to mostly live a solitary life, he always assumed. While the ones who preferred the grasslands needed the protection of numbers to keep the predators at pay. At least that was what he had observed during his attempts to hunt both. The ones in the herds banded together, creating a giant mass of flying hooves and bodies that made it difficult to target a single one. As for the forest, he found it difficult to navigate the trees sometimes.

Which lead to this very, very bad decision. He guessed his hunting days would now be over.

Unless...

Leoncio began to zig zag, much like some of the prey he had stalked would do when they noticed him. It wasn't as easy for him to imitate them. He didn't think he was doing too bad a job. He was too afraid of losing his rhythm to look back and see. While he moved sideways in quick jerks, he made his way towards the wooded areas the nantlil had lead him towards by accident. If he lost prey in between the trees, perhaps it would work for her?

Behind him, Amaia laughed evilly, keeping her distance on purpose. She wasn't tiring just yet, but she could see him beginning to tire. Just a little. The longer this went on, the quicker he would tire and than she would have him. The only problem was what was she going to do once she caught him? She could punish him for the offense. He looked strong. He was taller, that was for sure, not that that meant he was also stronger. Some hoofed animals were taller than her and weaker. They went down easily. Never had she yet tackled another predator, though. Weaker or not, she knew this one wouldn't go down as easily.

If he would fight. Some didn't. Some were so passive that they just laid there and took it. That was no fun. What was the point of being gifted with sharper teeth than most if there was no struggle? It was like pouncing on a little rodent in the high grass. Or swatting at butterflies with one paw. Too easy.

A smirk played across the nantlil's face as the tahtll dove into the safety of the trees. Alright. Now this was what she was talking about. He was putting up a bit of a fight, trying to lose her trail. Now we'd see who had more agility. It was already clear she had better endurance.

Amaia started to close the distance between them slowly.

The trees were doing no good. At least not against his pursuer. If anything, the trees were making it easier for her to catch up to him, as he was finding it difficult to maneuver around them. Why was she so good at the chase? Had she been in the world longer than him? It was difficult to tell. She had looked no older or younger than him from the glimpse he had seen before taking her meal.

But she must be older. Her endurance and agility were greater, like she had been practicing for a while to get better at chasing down prey. He...He wasn't that good. Intended meals kept getting out from under his paws, even when he dug his claws in. Maybe he just wasn't coming at them at the right angle. The smaller rodents he could catch most of the time. Unless they zig zagged down to a hole in the ground where his body was too large to fit through. The bigger ones, though...Maybe it was like this for most B'alam? He wouldn't know. This nantlil was the only other one he had seen. And like him, she had caught a rodent. So maybe the bigger ones were more difficult to catch in general.

Not that that mattered. Or wouldn't if she caught up. Time to ditch the trees.

Leoncio took a wide detour, cutting it close to the Fire nantlil. So close he could feel her claws raking his fur. Fortunately, he hadn't gotten close enough for the claws to sink in fully into his flesh. He was sure, once she managed that, he would go down easily.

He had such little faith in himself.

The dark Earth made for the edge of the trees where he knew them best. Where they had just entered into the forest from. He pushed his legs to go faster, to make it through the crowd of tall trunks into wide territory. Where he could continue to run from her without having to dodge anything.

Unfortunately, as he broke through the trees, something small and furry darted across his path. He stopped, jumped into the air to avoid it, and lost his grip on the meal in his mouth. The creature that had startled him saw the opportunity, snatched the small dead rodent, and took off back into the trees. Leoncio tripped over his own paws, distracted by trying to follow the other animal with his eyes, and lay in the grass, panting heavily. His stamina completely depleted with the disappointment of losing the meal he had stolen himself. He didn't even have the energy to get up as he heard the other B'alam approaching him.

What game was he playing at?

As the dark B'alam ran past her, changing his direction so quickly she barely had time to switch her own direction, Amaia attempted a last ditch effort to grab onto him. To stop him from moving forward. To bring him back down to the earth where she could easily get at him and the kill in his mouth.

But she missed. As her claws scrapped his fur, she cursed silently into the wind, maneuvering her body around so she could keep close on his heels. He was heading for the openness, again. Did he hope to be able to outrun her with all that room to move? Ha! She was still faster. Their little trip through the trees made that obvious! Time to put an end to this chase!

The Fire increased her speed, opening her mouth as she did so with the intentions of clamping onto his tail, which was flapping behind him. It was pointless on one such as him. What balance it offered was useless.

But instead of clamping onto his tail, he seemed to trip in mid air, landing hard back on the ground where he remained. Amaia had to make a quick sudden stop, digging her front claws into the ground, to avoid tripping over him. It was at that moment she seen the fox. And her eyes saw red.

"You imbecile!" she screamed at him, coming down with a paw hard on his back. She was pleased to hear a grunt. "You couldn't hold onto one stupid rabbit!"

Cowering on the ground, Leoncio accepted each blow with nothing more than a few grunts as she continued to hit and wail at him about losing the meal. Though he was bigger than her and stronger, it didn't stop her hits from beginning to hurt more and more as she began to bruise his skin. But he was afraid. One wouldn't think so by looking at his bulk, but he was always afraid. Other B'alam, larger prey, even that fox would have caused him fear. In fact, if the small animal had turned around and bared its teeth at him, he would have gladly given up his prize to get away without harm. That's how much a coward he was. It was pitiful.

But this one, she was different than him in so many ways. She was smaller, weaker than him, but she, without hesitation, put herself in possible harms way to punish him. He could have turned around and snapped the bones in her leg easily. Maybe she knew he wouldn't. Maybe she say right through him to his pitifully terrified core.

"It got the jump on me!" he finally yelled, nearing the point of pleading for his life. Or at least to have her stop hitting him. "I'll get you another one! I swear! Just stop!"

That made Amaia cease in her actions. He would, would he? He didn't seem like he had the right kind of skills to make kills on his own. He wouldn't have been able to get away from her. Her speed, agility, and endurance was better. The only thing he had going for him was his strength.

Mm. That might be useful, actually.

"Alright. I shall consider you in my debt." The Fire nantlil moved back a few paces and stood there, watching him still shivering on the ground with amusement in her eyes, her tail slowly swaying back and forth along the ground. Even if this didn't work out how she wanted, at least she could use him for entertainment. Something to kick around when no one else was available. She had such frustration to get out all the time. He certainly wouldn't be great for conversation. That much was clear. In fact, she was fairly certain this wouldn't work out for anything but personal entertainment. If he let a fox get the better of him, what good would he be to her, otherwise? His strength would be useless. It was already useless.

But maybe, just maybe, she could talk him into doing what she wanted. Using his strength for her purposes. Maybe she could use his weaknesses against him to make him do what she wanted. Scare him into submission. That could be fun.

Yes. She would do that.

Though the beatings had stopped, Leoncio was too afraid to uncurl his body from the ground. His body tingled from where she had been striking him and would probably bruise tomorrow. But at least she hadn't used her claws. He was grateful for that. Although he wasn't sure if he was grateful for being spared this way or not. In her debt? That didn't sound good.

Shifting his head slightly, he dared a peek at the lady, than quickly shut his eyes, again. She had beautiful coloring, but her face...All those sharp teeth. And those eyes...So filled with contempt for everyone around her, like everyone and everything was beneath her paws. There was no friendliness in her face. Just cruelness. It made him more fearful of her plans for him than he was of her.

What did she plan on doing? Maybe she'd use him as a punching bag from now on as she just was. Or make him test out dangerous areas. Or make him walk up to dangerous creatures for her own amusement. And more ideas, just rolling in one by one into his head.

Oh, he didn't like the sound of this at all...
