Cain remained silent while Kalani stuttered out his answer. The shaken words, though ridiculous, pricked a bit at Cain's mind. There was no hope of this cub going home, he was going to serve a higher purpose! It would have been less of a hassle to pawn him off on Kagi. That is what he should have done in the first place. Morning Star would have none of this softness...

Still... there was a promise. Why did that matter? Why was this cub crying? How frustrating.

Carefully Cain lifted a paw and brought it around the young cub. His wings enclosed tighter.

"A sandworm cannot come in here. They do not dare come close to me..." Cain responded. He purposefully left out addressing the bit about Kalani's mother. It would do no good for either of them.

Never ending waterfall like tears continued to run down the cubs face. "Promise?" he sniffled in between his sobs. Still he wanted his mother not this tah that had promised to help him get back home. Why did he even leave in the first place? That he could not remember.

"When...When can...I..go...home?" he questioned still his tears would not stop. Once he started it was really hard to make them stop.

Eulalia had left the Fire territory for the time being, wanting to explore the lands a bit more and see what she could discover. She had yet to find a story to record to memory for the library back home and was finding herself growing a bit impatient to show her worth to the rest of the Chroniclers and Stillwater. More for her own peace of mind than anything else. Far as she knew, she was the only one who had anything to say on the matter. Stories couldn't be rushed, after all. They had to be found naturally. The B'alam population in the world may just still be rather low.

It was getting a bit on the late side and tiredness was finally starting to overcome her, when the Fire nantlil saw something bright in the distance. Though she couldn't be sure on what it was, she would have confidently bet on anyone near her it was a B'alam. Either that or one of the little critters some befriended. Only one way to find out!

Keeping to bushes in an attempt to hide her own bright fur, Eulalia crept closer, close enough to see it was indeed a B'alam. And a young one at that. He looked scared. And alone. She knew it was her job to watch and not intervene, but wouldn't this be a special case? One couldn't simply stand by and allow a youngster to survive in the wilderness on their own. And even if it wasn't allowed, who would ever know? There were only a handful of Chorniclers. The chances of being spotted were small.

But before she could move an inch, another figure came into view, this one darker and larger. Good. Perhaps he would help the cub and Eulalia wouldn't have to break any vows on her very first watch. She remained silent in her bush until they took flight and went beyond an area she could not pass. Taking a few moments to commit the experience to memory, the Chronicler continued on her way. This time to find somewhere to sleep.

Cain continued to watch the cub's eyes stream with ears. He noted the fur becoming matted and soaked around the young one's eyes. Normally he would have passed the young one to Kagi for him to deal with the loud annoying sobbing. That thought continued to drift about in his mind as he lay there with the cub still under his wings. WHY?! Why hadn't he?

Cain's good ear pinned back a moment as he struggled with this thought. There was nothing he could think of to explain why.

Before responding, Cain's ear perked forward again and he lowered his head just a little. Not enough to be at level with the young cub, but notably lower than it had been.

"I promise." He responded with yet another promise.

The mere thought of such a thing shot a burring sensation of irritation along every inch of his fur. More so at himself. It just seemed odd behavior. Perhaps he was still not recovered from his injuries from the newly awoken Fire Magus and her mate. Yes, that had to have been it.

Very carefully Cain brought the thumb-claw of his wing down and delicately wiped the tears away from the young cub's eyes.

"Perhaps it will do you some good to get some sleep for now. Do not trouble your mind with questions that are unknown. I will protect you as you sleep. Put your worries aside and rest now..." Came his bold reply.

His one good eye held on the near hysterical cub a moment more before he forced himself to look up and away from the young one. A terrible frustration was causing his old wounds to ache as he convinced himself more and more that they were the cause of this bizarre behavior he was displaying.

The sniffling of the small cub continued. Though slowly his tears began to stop falling at Cain's words. Yes, he would be fine, that is what he felt. He could trust Cain. It was Cain's actions that convinced the small one that he was quite gentle just like Uncle Zeke and his mother. But the scars of the wounds the other possessed reminded him of father. Strong and proud. This adult must have been in many battles protecting small ones like himself. That is what Kalani truly believed.

Though the thought of his family nearly caused him to start his bawling again. Yet his mind drifted to his sister, no he had to be brave. Just like before, just like his siblings. He could do this, he knew he could. No more crying, if he wanted to get back he had to stop crying. He couldn't burden Cain anymore then he had been. He sniffed a bit more, but slowly his tears stopped, just as Kalani willed them to.

Kalani nodded. Yes, sleep he would need that. At least he could try. "I-" the soft whisper came from his maw, but he cut himself off. No more of that, no more doubting no more being afraid, he could do this. The cub's tail curled around him as he settled back down. "Good night" He whispered.

He was tired, the long night had trickled into the day, and with all the excitement the small cub had he was exhausted both physically and mentally. The small one's teal orbs slowly slipped closed, unable to keep them open any longer. Soon he was fast asleep, curled up close to Cain.

Cain remained perfectly still until he could feel the breathing slow down in the young cub curled beside him. Once he was certain Kalani had fallen asleep he brought his wing down and around the little one, than he lifted his head and watched the end of the cave.

His mind drifted to every task he had completed that night. Because of his promises to this one cub he had been unable to fly out and capture more cubs. One great cub among many mediocre just may be enough to over look this lack in quantity. And perhaps these promises could lead to a solid loyalty that would be unbroken even by Kalani's own family. Cain had already failed Morning Star several times. He felt as if his life had already been forfeit, yet as long as his lord saw a use for him, he would try to atone for his many mistakes.

As soon as Morning Star was ready he would have to present this cub to him. Hopefully the cub would not disappoint....
