His orders were fairly simple.

Faer never delved into the details of anything. The world was simple that way, it made sense. Details...were complicated. Details brought forth questions, questions meant questioning, questioning led to punishment...and punishment made things a little difficult. All he needed to know was what he was to do, how he was to do it, and what he could expect if he was not able to perform such tasks.

To his credit, he did have some...good qualities. He was patient. He could wait until moss grew down his back.

It had been three days with nothing to show for his efforts. The moment the rays of the sun's light faded from the sky, Faer's dark crimson wings cut through the stars, carrying him over the dark-painted landscape in search for one of the most rare, precious things in the realm- newly-woven cubs. Wild cubs. Morning star needed them if his vision was to be realized...of course, Faer could care less as to why he asked for them. He asked for them- that was more than enough for him.

The night was new and the very last colors began to bleed from the clouds that had gathered in the sky. The air was growing thick with moisture. It would likely rain...which would be unfortunate. His hunt would be cut short if he was unable to maintain his flight. Not a precious moment was to lose.

With no cave or cliffs available, Faer had taken shelter in a wood. It had dampened the sun's rays and allowed him to rest. When the night broke, he climbed up into one of the taller trees and launched himself into the air. The wind howled in the dark membranes of his wings as he powered himself up and out, fighting every wing stroke to gain altitude. Take-off was never easy away from the homeland, but easy was for the weak and the useless. His wings were strong.

The days where new and the nights where dark and scary. A newly woven wild cub, had filled his days with extrapolation, adventure and better yet- discovery! New smells, touches, and the best tastes! Viktor was finding out at this vary moment, his body longed for good tastes. So much so, it growled at him and gnawed at his insides.

A frustrated little reved growl left the small cub as he grumbled back at his stomach. All day he had searched for something to crew on and eat. Something that would cause his insides to stop biting him. The little bugs he had found and pounced for had been too quick for him, and the bark on the tree was not filling. (And not a good taste.)

Claws flexed and with a heavy butt of his head on a crystal like log, Victor scrapped his own branch that sprouted on his head against the tree bark. It was getting dark, and the cub was struggling with the idea of still foraging when the bight light goes down all the way. It would be dark, he didn't like the dark something about it just shook the cub to the core. Its why he worked all day to be out in the sun. He had found that by being in the sun, the hard things on his body glowed better and his horn shined more brightly. It gave a comforting light for him at night, and it especially brightened his little hole in the ground that under a partly raised tree. A little hole he was proud of as one day he worked really hard to dig out with his own two paws...

a bagie like colored tail whipped around him, as another growl left the cub's tummy. Viktor needed to find something to eat. Perhaps there was better things, easier things to find in the dark. Maybe even a big thing...one he could hide and keep for later tastes...

Slipping out from under his hiding, Victor took in a slow deep breath. Looking up to see the comforting glow of his horn, a weak smile cracked on the cub's 'bearded' traced maw. He could do this, at least for a little bit, the cub reassured himself...

Slowly a paw stretched out and gripped the earth under him and his little body pulled it's self fully from the hole in the ground. Sniffing the air, the incoming blackness was 'cool and crisp' to the smell. Whiskers flexed and curled about his nose. Hind legs slowly sat under himself as his wide eyes looked around him.

It was odd that everything outside the glow of his horn was not really noticeable, it made the cub question as if it was actually there still. Tilting his head, Viktor shifted his ears. His front paw raised, and tested at taking another step. He stopped as a new feeling gripped at his chest. It was like it was telling him that he should not be in the dark.

Weather it was courage or the hunger in his stomach, or even stubbornness, Viktor's nose crinkled and he pulled his body around. He could face the dark, he had the glow of his horn and the hunger in his stomach. The wild cub reassured himself that he would be back before it became too dark. That and he was a good hider, not that he had yet to encounter anything that would be signified as dangerous...yet

Viktor unknowingly made himself a beacon of obvious pray, as his little light floated above him as he moved vary quietly amongst the trees of the forest.

The deep, dark wings almost blended perfectly with the growing darkness of the night sky. Black against black, starry speckles against a starry field. Only his alabaster crest of fur would have given him away. Thankfully, his mantle ran against his back and remained invisible to those below. He was but a shadow passing over the moon, a ripple in the stars, a strange, ill wind in a fair tide through the night sky.

He glided nearly effortlessly upon the remaining thermal climbs lingering from the day time. The last hot sighs of the earth below gave him easy climbing, sending him up into the sky. Below the world became as clear to him as a world map. The trees were highlighted by the moonlight, moving in the breeze like a sea of silvery emeralds.

There-

He turned his head slightly and rolled his ears. A light illuminated the ground down below.

He adjusted his wings, shifting his shoulder down just slightly and releasing a small cushion of wind from the dark membranes. His body turned seamlessly and guided him closer to the little light. It was hard to focus on- but he could make out the small figure bearing the light in the darkness. Small. Tiny. Fat.

A cub.

Morningstar's orders were very simple and to the point. Retrieve cubs- alive - and bring them to him. Don't let himself be seen if possible...kill anyone that did witness his approach.

He licked his maw and rolled his shoulders downward. He beat his wings, pushing himself up and up, then curved his spine. His paws tucked in against his belly and his massive form dropped like a tear from the blackness of night down towards the trees.

Soft underbrush quietly shifted under paw as Viktor moved. The comforting glow that came from his horn, give him a wondrous guide to see past the curtain of black that was around him. However, that same peaceful glow gave away his position, and alerted anything that he had hoped to catch. Inturn made him pray to the unknown danger that was above him, one that was swooping down on him.

Hunger was one of the two things that was on the cub's mind. He was so hungry it cradled and outweighed it's self by the fear that he too also held. It had been a natural fear of the dark, which did do well to slow his step but not halt his venture. Viktor did after all, have his little nightlight to keep him safe from the unseen baddies of the night....

Pausing in his step, Viktor's ears twisted and turned as he felt something grip at his chest and pull his fur to stand on end. Tail froze, and felt heavy. It was such a strange sensation, one he had never experienced until now. It was....unpleasant. It was like something was creeping up in his insides and a icy paw was trying to grab on to him. Like something was hovering over him....

Claws shifted in the brush under him, as mind whispered a dare to look behind him.

But if there really was something there, maybe it wouldn't harm him if he didn't look or perhaps wasn't even there? It was a feeble and cub like thought. One that comforted him, and he stubbornly started forward once more. Ears flattened against his skull as eyes narrowed and he carefully continued his search and unknowingly continued to be an obvious beacon to pray.

Each paw step was given with the guidance of a low hovering body, that looked like a small sausage with twigs for legs. A glowing light announced him unknowingly as prey, for anyone one that might have the malicious thought to see him as such. Though, his instincts told him that he should be careful in the darkness, his stomach told him that he was hungry and should eat too. After all, the cub has never known anything or anyone that would cause his conscious to tell him that it wasn't okay to venture out in the dark.

Three trees. About twelve large branches to avoid- easily done with the distance between them. There was a worrisome cluster of four, some of the branches reaching and weaving around one another. Thin twigs would be a pain- but unavoidable. He could break through them with some minor scrapes. The prize would be worth it.

The cub seemed...girthy. He would need a good grip on it. A light tribe. Glowing orb. A horn. A perfect handle- his tail could be the second. Perfect. Minimal struggling, claws safely below the bloated fuzzy body, and the light orb grasped in one paw- hopefully it wouldn't be too blinding. Small sacrifice.

He grabbed a pocket full of air to push himself upwards, his sleek, inky body curving. With a graceful downward lunge he plumeted. His ears flattened against his ebony neck. His wings cupped close to his body, each claw pressing close to compress the leathery membrane. He fell like a shadow, and by the time the cub would hear his form snapping small twigs and leaves out of the way, the limited dappled moonlight around his paws would blacken. Silver eyes and pearly fangs broke the darkness.

One paw reached out, grabbing for the offending glowing sphere and the horn in which it sat. The second reached for his tail- or where he assumed the tail might be.

Searching, sniffing. Eyes carefully looked where they could in the fleeting light, that rested on the top of his crown. It wasn't much light, but it comforted the little...girthy cub. What he didn't know, was that the little beacon of light was alerting any insects he had hoped to try and capture. By 'capture', the writer meant 'eat', in hopes to still his grumbling tummy.

Rustling, caused Victor to turn his ear to where it might have been. Surely, it was evidence that the bugs were indeed running....

Huffing. This all just seemed hopeless.

The round cub was about to stop-there was an annoyed thrash of his tail. In a instance the light of his horn dimmed and seemed to grow in size as the ground was quickly pulled up from under him. His white paws became visible, and a pull was felt on his crown. His tail whipped around under him, as it remained clear of the dark mass' claws. A mew left the sausage, as he realized something had him and was picking him up into the darkness of the sky. As this knowing came to the cub-it struck him like a flash of lightning, fear gripped his thoughts.

The Darkness had reached out and grabbed him! Plucking him! Taking him into oblivion!

NO!

The darkness watched as the cub whipped and nay-nayed. Sausage body twisted and contorted. Desperate claws bolted from their hiding place, coming to his defense! Body puffed and turned ridged, and his mews turned horse and rabid. Body reacted, before thoughts could process what might happen to be dropped from such a height. That didn't matter right now! He had to be free! That is what was important! It was all that filled the light cub's thoughts, he couldn't let the night swallow him whole!

Damn this thing...

Faer lowered his head to clamp a set of pearly teeth down on the horn, anchoring it firmly in place while his less powerful paws reached and grabbed at the struggling ball in his grasp, screaming and carrying on like an injured Paroo. The dark B'alam's wings fought against the struggling burden, clawing at the night sky for altitude. He couldn't keep his attention on the path ahead and keep his hold in the cub.

He couldn't fail...master would be upset. Master would raise a paw. Master would begin...speaking in long, odd words and phrases that were pleasant to hear but meant so little to Faer. He needed cubs, many of them. Cubs were easier to teach then the adults were, they would grow to understand as Faer did, perhaps better. This one could be his master some day. Perhaps he would stand beside Morning Star and speak... a little more simply.

Faer bared his teeth down, squinting against the flashing lights. The blessed darkness was being driven away in horrible, painful flashes of light. The shapes ahead of him soon vanished- he flew blind.

The massive B'alam soon met with resistance in the form of a thick, sturdy tree branch. Two cracks split the night- the first as his body flung into the branch and snapped it away from the trunk, sending him and his precious bundle to the ground. The second was the much smaller branch clung to his teeth being snapped in two as the force of the first collision drove his jaw to clench around the still fragile structure.

In a tangled mess of wings, limbs, dirt, and tree, Faer rolled to a stop on the ground. Hurt. Pain. Sprain? No...nothing broke. Hopefully. He felt his fur rip, his shoulder growing warm and damp, and aches slowly seeping down through his wings and the side of his face. For one blessed moment he laid there, the light extinguished. The light-

He lifted his head, stars still swimming in his vision, and glanced around. The light- no. It was gone?!
