You're looking to discuss nature versus nurture.
2-3 personalized statements on how our parents influenced our future won't be very good philosophy/rely on speculation.
Questions to maybe look at, is our future determined purely on nature? Is human nature really violent brutish and short? if you want to look at it Religiously is human nature really filled with sin (original sin) Are we naturally ordered, naturally disordered, or a blank slate
Ordered: We intend to do good, independent of nurture.
Disordered: We intend to do evil, we are naturally violent, with be brutish, and live short lives. (original sin)
Tabula Rasa: We are neither good or evil and our entire lives are determined by nurture.
So you could look at it from that point of view and argue if parents have an effect on us.
You should look at the philosophers that discuss human nature such as Hobbes.
