He sucked in a sharp breath, but even breathing was painful. He swung an arm out and razor sharp talons collided with the knight, screaming across the metal in an awful sort of ear piercing shriek. Ren flapped his wings once, twice, and rose into the air, high up above the knight, trying to gain some leverage.

He took a breath.
Time seemed to slow around him, the knight craning its head up to look at him. Ren twisted his body in mid-air, somersaulting with his wings flapping and his foot came down hard on the knight's head. He twisted again, did another flip, and this time it was his other foot, the heel of his boots slamming down with an awful, creaking crunch.
The knight wavered, gave a scream of anger and denial -
- and then slowly faded away into nothingness.
And Ren, who was finding it hard to draw breath without feeling as though things were stabbing into his chest, slowly drifted to the ground, staring as something appeared in his line of vision, just beyond where the guardian had stood.
A piece of parchment, rolled up and tied neatly with a little red and gold ribbon.
