there are many manufacturers of good alternative bases out there. For example Scibor Monstrous Minitures Scibor or Puppets War Puppets War

Micro Art Studios is another great source!

Mosaic bases, Dwarf themed bases, arcane bases and more modern warehouse bases.

You could also sculpt your own easily enough and through the magic of instant-mold, cast your own.

Dark Art Miniatures has some Tomb bases, which I always thought looked like the floor of some sort of Imperial citadel or cathedral. My wife uses them for her Sisters of Battle and they look pretty awesome. Not strictly tile, per se, but a worthy option at a very affordable price.

Sooo, what's the opinion out there about painting the edges of bases? I've always left the beveled edges black, but GW seems to consistently paint them an earthy color of some sort or another. What do you guys do?

When I've actually finished to that point I tend to paint them the color of the terrain I guess, like my Dreadnaught has its base painted white for the snow terrain.

Mine are black, it's a nice sharp contrast and breaks immersion just enough to get on the tits of some people. rofl

The sharp contrast is what really works for me. I'm currently working on a piece which has a base about 10 centimeters high and 5 centimeters diameter but completely black, which works fantastic with the small diorama on top the column. The black makes it feel like a clean piece if that makes sense. lol
