I ask my teacher kinda the same thing.
(Lol, I'm bring my Death Note craziness to school..)

If you understood what 'protagonist' was, the answer would be simple.
Protagonist means, the main character.
So Light was the protagonist.

But since L/Mello/Near/Matt were helping the world, doesn't necessarily mean they're the protagonist.

It's just that the anime was in a "villain's" point of view.

ah, but Light was the one CAUSING trouble, so wouldn't that make L the protagonist?

No, if the question was meant to be 'Who was the good guy?' then it would be L.
But she used "Protagonist" and protagonist is the main character.
L is the antagonist because he was opposing Light.

Death note was in Light's perspective.
So Light is the protagonist.

This series is unique because usually the protagonist is the good guy, but not in this case! xd

The definition of protagonist is 'the leading character'. In most stories it tends to be the good guy. But in Death Note you could consider Light the bad guy and he'd still be the protagonist since he is the main character.

Note that is says "the leading character, hero or heroin." 'or' being the keyword.
Just wanted to clear that up unless you guys already did sweatdrop
