Fish Vet?

I have a large calico goldie that came down with fin rot. Some time in the quarentank with MelaFix cleared it all up then after a week he came down with it again then he cleared up and now has it yet again. This is the third time in a row and I live in a small city that doesn't offer much in the way of fish meds. Now I'm left with taking him into a vet to try and kick this cycle.

Have you ever taken a fish to a vet? If so what was it for, what was your success rate and, if you don't mind sharing, what was the bill?

How is your water quality?
Maybe that is the key to the reoccurances of fin rot. o.o

Never been to a vet, but I'm in the process of hand-feeding a goldfish. The anti-bacterial doesn't seem to be working too great... though he's definately better. He can move across the floor with great effort instead of just lying on the bottom like a rock. I even saw him go up to the top for air [once]!
