This poem was just me venting in my boredom. Feel free to tear it apart. I don't like the title so if you have any suggestions feel free to just put them out there.
Birds
Why is the mockingbird held in such high esteem?
Why does the caged bird sing?
Why choose a thorn bird to represent depression?
Why do birds help our dreams take wing?
So many have pondered in book and song,
Yet not one faces the real question.
It’s not about the birds and their noise,
It’s about our own obsession.
Our obsession with the lack of knowledge of things,
Our obsession with the lack of freedom and love,
Our obsession with the lack of acceptance,
Our obsession with money or the lack thereof.
We are a people, separate in being,
Yet, we are a people one in thought.
No one anymore is carefree,
They are weighted down and fraught.
They are fraught with grief and ill,
They are fraught with trouble that arrives,
They are fraught with work and toil,
They are fraught by their everyday lives.
Nobody’s happy these days,
Everything is everyone else’s fault.
No one loves anyone anymore,
There is no God to exalt.
The writers of old had one thing right:
Birds are a symbol of many things.
But no one these days could ever say the same,
Our sense of philosophy is gone and with it the joy that it brings.
No one today will ask the question,
The question we dance around in our old literature.
The reason for this is quite a simple one:
The question is something the can not endure.
It cannot endure our cruelty,
It cannot endure our greed,
It cannot endure our crimes,
It cannot endure unless we heed.
We must heed the cry for kindness,
And the happiness it brings,
We must heed the cry for love,
And the exchange of rings.
Why is the mockingbird held in such high esteem?
Why does the caged bird sing?
Why choose a thorn bird to represent depression?
Why do birds help our dreams take wing?
The unstated question,
The whispers from a page,
The forever puzzled generation,
The unknowing new age.
