My Life's Become a Masquerade
I feel like I'm wearing a mask
Shrouded and unseen
How can they stare right at me
Yet not see the person I truly am?
I wear my heart on my sleeve
Bare and perfectly exposed
So why won't anyone take my hand
To hear all those secrets I want known?
I'm not sure if it's ignorance
Or that they purely don't care
But I am a human too
And I desperately need a friend
If life is truly a dance
Mine's become a masquerade
No one shows their own real faces
Covering them with so many lies
Everyone builds themselves up
To something they really aren't
It's like they purposefully pick the mask they'll wear
As their lives go tumbling on
So here I stand barefooted
Reaching my hand to my face
Defiantly removing that piece of filth
That everyone is so comfortable with
I tear my mask off my skin
Silently throwing it to the floor
I won't be run by the rules of this dance
Society's put before us anymore.

This is so true.

To hear all those secrets I want known?

I love that imagery.

Its an interesting metaphor: life to masquerade. I really like the way you approached it, saying that you put yourself out there, but then everyone seems so blind and unable to see the you you want them to see. I find this very relatable, and, of course, enjoyable.

Go EvolvingWolf! One of my beliefs is that poetry is written to defy society in some sort of way, even if its almost invisible, and I can usually find this defiance. You put it straightforward with wonderful flow and imagery. I love your ending lines: "I won't be run by the rules of this dance Society's put before us anymore." I believe it was Robert Frost, but I can't quite remember, but one poet said, "The worst thing for us poets is to be in style."
