I am pretty picky with what I choose to read, but all in all good story forms the base. This excludes right away all those productions in where plot exists only to bring us some sex scenes and whining crying uke boys. Even short story can be very intelligent and thouching, but I really mean it when I say that appraise the authors storytelling skills. Poor pieces of work find their way very quickly to my recycle bin.

I think that interesting and likeable characters are what I consider to be the most important. Plot is a close second place, though. It comes down to how involved with the characters I feel. If I don't care about the characters then I have no real interest in following their story to the end.

This is a really good question!
I'm a sucker for angst. If it looks like it will be sad (legitimately sad, not, 'my-best-friend-won't-talk-to-me-and-even-though-it's-obvious-that-he-has-a-crush-on-me-I'm-gonna-take-it-badly-and-weep-endlessly-about-it' sad) then I'm on board. Also, teacher-student relationships and Doctor-patient relationships always grab my interest. And, to a certain extent, so do master-pet-esque relationships. I'm not really into the whole furry cosplaying thing, but I think it's interesting if one person in a couple is cared for almost/completely by the other.
Art typically doesn't bother me, so long as it's not all angles. For some reason, very very angular drawing irritates me. Other than that, I'm not too picky.
