@Fare: Centers and specialists are... like, gym, media, and art, primarily. Sometimes there's vocal and instrumental music.

Thanks, I had figured that much out. I'm just not sure how equally they relate to what we call "options." Is it the same concept? Roughly, they seem to be. Are they exact parallels? No idea. I actually never had the option of taking anything like what you call "Media," although I did take a computer class.

(We learned how to format business letters, essays and ... something else I do not remember. Obviously not that useful. Oh! Lists and charts. The class was tolerably useful to me although it failed to teach me to touch type. Gaia and e-mail succeeded where that class failed.)

I wrote my post assuming that the concepts were similar, but not exactly the same.

I love that my school has mandatory music and art classes. I'm not great at art, but I didn't mind taking it, it's only three and a bit hours out of my week for half a school year. Hardly a big deal. It gives everyone a chance to try everything out, and they may find they have a passion/talent for something. Not everyone has to money for private lessons, and allowing less academically inclined kids to do music/art at school seems sensible all round to me.
As for gym, the Aussie equivalent is PDHPE, which stands for Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and the course is half hlaf between sport and theory lessons (sex ed and stuff) so its definately important.
'Finance class' Is calle comerce where I live. (But it's an elective only)
Foreign languages are good too, and a very practical skill for a person to have that really makes you stand out to an employer.
Computers in only mandatory for a very very short time at my school, I'd probably make it a bit longer.

In my opinion kids should be exposed to as many different things in their first years of high school so they know what their strengths and weaknesses are.

I wish that my college had a play ground because I'd so play on it.
We have a carousel by the physics building. Its cool smile

Thats what I mean though. PE takes the place of recess or playground equipment in encouraging regular exercise.
