Well, to start with, I think it is totally wrong of them to put her on the cover if she is not going to be completely nude inside the magazine. Naked people are kind of the Playboy thing unless I'm mistaken? So it's more or less false advertising. You see someone on the cover, be they a cartoon or otherwise, and the expectation is that by buying it you get to see them naked.
Other than that, man, so what if she's a cartoon character? You may or may not have watched Simpsons as a kid, but you're fooling yourself if you "never thought of Marge as a sexual character." IIRC there are flashback episodes where she is super kinky, and non-flashback ones where she and Homer are eluded to have sex (in his Mr. Plow jacket, on a golf course, etc etc etc). She may not be explicitly sexual all the time, but there is a reason many of my friends think of Marge Simpson as THE cartoon wife to marry.
What was I talking about? Right, cartoon characters naked. So what? There's tons of that on the internet. It would be ridiculous for playboy to not try and tap that market, especially if their sales are down. I think it's hilarious that "reaching a younger audience" = "naked cartoons," like if that's really the reasoning, what does that say about the influence of Japanese culture? Since most naked cartoons are thought of as "hentai," I mean.

The Simpsons family is an American icon. It has been for years and years and years. The same goes for Playboy (its logo is one of the most renown/marketed symbol).
For the two to go together, it makes things interesting and accents the fact that The Simpsons IS the "average American (<******** up) family". It's why the show was so great.
Even if Marge is an animated character, I find it empowering for her to be featured. Marge is a housewife, mother to three, with a slob of a husband. This is a HUGE contrast to the stereotypical sexy women with the perfect breasts, perfect bodies, perfect everything all in their early 20's.
Are middle-aged women (with the kids, the housekeeping, the general house-wife duties) not allowed to be seen as sexual beings? Does all of that feminine-sexual-prowess that I know EVERY matured woman has, lost after the 'golden years' of being 2X?
I do agree that it is a publicity stunt (not sure for which party), but all things already said so far aside, I think it's brilliant for amusement purposes and if anyone decides to interpret it as I have, for the feminine-empowerment.
Plus, there was even a parody/crack!feature where Marge had a tryst with QUAGMIRE from Family. And another episode where she almost had an affair with Flanders (single father with two kids and a HUNKY HUNKY BODY who is a saint).
It's not a surprise to use Marge at all. :]
Maybe if they use some female animated character from Nickelodeon or Disney.. then I might be slightly disgusted (I'd still find it hilarious though.)
