So, I am looking to maybe transition some of my poetry into song lyrics but I am a bit lost as to where to start. I greatly appreciate songwriters like Bob Dylan who tell a story and keep several elements of classical literature and poetry present in their lyrics...however, there is enough difference between the two that it calls for its own category. How do you formulate your song lyrics...in general? One thing I am afraid of, and it follows in my poetry, is rhyming too much or being too technical.

Personally, I keep a spiral notebook with me at all times, and when I have an idea for a line, or a phrase, I write it down. Then later when I get home I simply pick one from my book that I like more than the others at that moment, and see where it takes me.
There is nothing wrong with rhyming, when it's done well.

I have the same exact problem now! I made the music, with a chorus part and everything, and now I'm having trouble singing the words out. I'm sort of the opposite of you though-I suck at rhyming so I don't do it. I'm afraid of a song that doesn't rhyme...it sounds so off...
does the poetry already have a rhythm to it? when i write poetry i give it a rhythm though i have never made poetry into song lyrics. what i would do is just think about the poem and feel the words dont just say them feel them and something will come to u trust me.

if u are having trouble putting a tune too it then just let it flow if u dont like it its okay just start over and soon u will succeed. dont give up!! i kno it'll be an awesome song!
Does anyone think putting secret meanings in there songs is wierd? Because I do.

you should be writing a tune as you make the lyrics if you intend it to be a song.
or just mess around with chord progressions until you find something that fits good
