And I methodically gained back a few pounds not by eating particularly badly [at worst I had pumpkin bread and veggie chips] but by not being able to exercise. Dx
I tried going for a walk, and it was nice, but the California cold heightened my illness.
Any tips as for what to do next time? Or to re-jump start my weight loss efforts now that I'm basically better. "If your stomach feels weak my work here is DONE."

Before thinking about your weight, I would worry about getting better. It isn't a good idea to focus on your weight more than your health. Who knows, once you get better, you may realize that you've either retained water or are simply bloating from the illness.
That would be my best idea.

I absolutely agree with Pink Rain. Worry about getting better first. Most people when confined to bedrest for a week or so (some people more, some less) get "stocked up", where they just retain fluid. Once you get back into the swing of things, then you should find yourself losing the gained weight. As for getting back into the swing of things, take it easy! Do what you feel comfortable doing and gradually work it back up to where you left off. Don't try to cram in all of that sick-time exercise in a day or a week even, just start from where you are now. Even if you're feeling better the lack of exercise has made your body a bit weaker, so start off easy again, don't try to just pick up where you left off.
I'm getting sick right now too, and not looking foward to inactivity. :[
