Bedfordshire has it`s fair share of myths.
A certain Captain Glenn miller of the USAF was stationed in the town during WWII.The last time hie was seen alive was when his plane took off from `Twinwoods` airfield, near the village of Clapham, a few miles outside of Bedford. It`s said a phantom aircraft takes off from the now-disused site.
One area of Bedford is known as `Black Tom`, after a somewhat ruthless and notorious highwayman. He was hanged in the old town Gaol, and (it is rumoured) burried at a crossroads..a commaon place to intern the bodies of criminals, outside of hallowed ground, and at a place-that-is-not-a-place so their damned soul could not cause mischeif. However, there have been periodic sightings of a flintlock brandishing figure in a frock-coat, blackedned and swollen toungue produding from purple lips and head lolling atop a brocken neck staggering down Union Street in Bedford.
Another highwayman associated with the county is the infamous d**k Turpin. It is said that the village of Aspley Guise on the Beds/Bucks boarder is home to his ghost that rides on a spectral Black Bess along weathercock Lane on moonless nights. The legend goes, two young lovers hoped to conceal their illicit relationship from the girl`s father. When he found out, s infuriated wad he that he walled them up alive in his wine cellar.Turpin found out, and blackmailed the man to let him use the cellar as a hiding place from the law.
