Thank you everyone!

There are those that are of the opinion that there are only a few gods, and that all the world deities are different aspects of them.

What of the belief that there are only a few gods (or only one), and the other ones simply don't really exist, those who believe they are not even thoughtforms, but more "delusions"? I see that no one has this belief here (nor did I expect it) but I have heard it elsewhere. To me it seemed so arbitrary; why would one believe in this pantheon/individual god but deny the existence of others?

I think some deities might be thoughtforms though, for example- these deities that some neopagans make up. Like 'caffeina' goddess of caffeine.

If I were to actually define my view of the Gods, it would be Monistic Soft Polytheist. The thing is, there are shades of grey, as in life itself. Which is why I'm glad to see such detail and thought put into these posts.

I worship the Greek pantheon, and only Them. I do believe that the Gods are cross-cultural, but think it would be hubris to actually assign Them within each pantheon--there are similarities, and I am sure that They needed to present Themselves to the varying peoples in the world as they needed most and was most appropriate. But I do believe They are indeed real and multiple--we are not even of a capacity to know hoe many and what Their true natures are.

The monism comes in because I do believe that there is an ultimate "reality" that encompasses all of existence. This is not a god per se, but is bigger than anything we can comprehend, hence us needing the Divine. The Gods are not emanations of The All, but are part of it.

Hey, offend Asphalta, goddess of parking spaces, at your own risk. I leave regular offerings of oil and the leavings of sodas to her honor. wink

Not to derail the thread too much, but I'm curious -

What's the opinion divide like here on modern tasks and gods? Like, how many of you believe new gods pop up for new tasks, and how many of you believe that old gods just expand their repertoire to related tasks? And if it's a bit of both, where's the dividing line for you?

For me it's a bit of both, but I frequently have trouble figuring out what MY dividing line is. I know that I believe pre-existing gods generally just expand their portfolios as the world changes, but I also believe in the possibility that new ones come into being as necessary, I just really can't... put together any kind of coherent reason as to why one happens over the other or how frequently. I just don't know.

Well, I don't think that deities are defined by their archetypes. So they can help with modern tasks. whee

Being inclusive. I do not think there is a dividing line between new and old gods. Hermes, as Patron of Travelers is going to protect me just as much as I drive (also giving luck with traffic and parking) as he did for the ancients opn foot and horse. Hestia will grace my home despite my 'hearth' being my kitchen stove rather than a fire.
