the morning afterHis left shoe was gone. Through the pounding headache and the stale taste of punch that lingered on his tongue, that was the only fact he could wrap his mind around. Slowly, the throbbing pain in his head began to recede, and West remembered. He remembered everything. Well, almost.
He remembered the day she had left the note telling him where he was to meet her for training. He remembered how happy he'd felt knowing he was going to spend the afternoon... well, he hadn't actually known what he was going to be doing that afternoon, to be honest. He wondered if he had actually been excited over the simple prospect of directed exertion or if it had been the promise of her presence that had really made him smile. He honestly didn't know anymore. West brought a hand up to his face, tracing his chilly fingertips over the spot where she had slapped him.
In hindsight, he was nearly positive that something had been affecting him this past week—affecting them both—ever since that moment in the forest he couldn't remember. In an instant he had gone from perching precariously on a log over a stream and flying into a rage when he faltered to staring into the tatzel's eyes. Voluntarily. It just wasn't right.
West pushed himself up into a seated position, splaying his fingers out on the ground behind him and locking his elbows to keep from flopping onto his back again. He thought of Levi—strong, brave, stubborn, frustrating Levi—how she would never turn down a fight, how effortlessly she held her own, how she grinned, how she laughed, how she hit him and bit him and patched him up when she was done, how good she smelled, how she felt in his arms...
The smirk that had grown closer and closer to resembling a genuine smile with every thought disappeared in an instant when he realized the direction his traitorous mind had turned. As it fled, a wave of rage swept over the boil, a wave so strong that he was surprised he didn't start punching the earth beneath him or shouting obscenities in its wake.
This was not happening. He had been so careful in the months since prom. He had been certain that he had erected a wall so impenetrable around his heart that he would never feel anything even approaching love for anyone ever again. But she'd found a crack and had wormed her way inside just like she wormed her way into his room. Uninvited. Unwanted. No. Levi had done nothing except be herself. He had let her in all on his own.
West wanted to be with her. He wanted Levi so badly that his stomach clenched and his chest hurt as he thought about the possibility of never seeing or speaking with her again. But he couldn't do this to himself. He would not knowingly allow such weakness to affect him again. Jack knew that every time he had allowed Duerre back in, the disappointment he felt when she left had grown harder and harder to take. He would not be disappointed this time.
There was no reason to let this affect him.
There was no reason to be a victim of his feelings.
West rose shakily to his feet and pushed his way out of the nightshade bush he had awakened in. At least he had possessed the sense to pass out somewhere no one would notice him.
He took a deep breath, consciously pushing all of the emotions and hazy memories from the night before into a little box in his brain and clicking the lid shut.
There. Last night had never happened.
