12-14. Firestone run! A weyrlings primary purpose, after all. Roll 1 D100. Evens are successful tosses that make their mark. Odds are botched tosses. It is assumed you make a successful throw afterwards but your pride is wounded.

Finally the call came for a firestone run! T'roi ordered Destrieth back to the Weyr to retrieve a couple of sacks of firestone, then they blinked through Between to where the request had come from to deliver their burden.

It was pure chaos at the higher level -- dragons swooped through the air frantically flaming Thread, which was everywhere. T'roi located their target, and as they approached the blue he flung one of the sacks of firestone toward the rider -- and missed. He felt the heat rise in his face beneath his flight helmet, embarrassed that he blew such a basic task. He made the second toss and retreated back down to the level the weyrlings were flying, his pride having taken a bit of a beating. One more thing to practice.

If you roll Odds in the 90s you’ve botched getting stone to the Weyrleader or Weyrsecond. You’re ruined.

Another call for firestone, another trip back to the Weyr to retrieve sacks for the riders on the upper levels. When they appeared near their target, it was even more chaotic than before. And it was the Wingsecond who had requested more firestone. Swallowing hard and focusing, T'roi tossed the sack toward them -- but a sudden gust of wind blew it just out of reach of the dragonrider, who scowled at T'roi. "Shells," he swore, readying the second bag and urging Destrieth closer to the other dragon. This time the toss was successful, but the damage had already been done. The most basic of tasks, the primary duty of a weyrling dragonrider, and he'd blown it -- twice.

It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a bronze or brown rider, you can’t help but feel that the smaller colors aren’t doing their jobs in trying to keep your dragon safe. If you’re a white, green, or blue rider, you almost start to suspect the larger color you’re covering is just using you as some meat shield and not bothering to flame like they should. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

Another clump of thread brushed Khazariath, briefly sparking some of the bronze's innate paranoia as D'rok squinted upwards to see if there was anybody above them who had perhaps missed a spot. It was a petty assertion to make, but his dragon getting hit wasn't something he was going to just sit there and take, shardit!

He only allowed the bitterness for a moment, however, before D'rok pushed his attention back to their own airspace. They had their own Thread to clear up!

You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread. [If your roll this five times or more throughout the course of the game, your Panic will get the best of you and you will panic yourself as you jump Between. You may choose to 1. die and be lost forever 2. appear from Between way off course and take Major Damage -12 HP by jumping right in a nasty clump that you weren't even supposed to be near or 3. appear from Between way off course right in your fellows airspace. Quote a weyrling and give them Major Damage -12 HP for flaming them or startling them into a patch. You in trouble now. Encouragement has no effect on this outcome or counter though you can be saved from damage.]

D'rok had been keeping himself steady for Khazariath's sake, but there was something about the proximity of the Queens performing their catches of falling dragons that made his chest tighten - that could just as well be one of their own class and no matter how tightly he held the notion, Khazariath was bound to feel it.

While aware - painfully aware - of that D'rok was trying to keep from coloring their confidence, Khazariath was hardly a panicky beast about it. He'd accepted it and had already steeled himself to stand out. Burn brightly until the end knowing that his rider would keep them safe. As if to assert this, he made a show of flaming down a particularly nasty clump that hadn't really been in their airspace and sending encouragement along to his rider.

Okay, got it. Focus. he took a deep breath and patted the bronze's shoulder. They had to both keep each other in line.

This is horrible. Thread is a lot more potent than you expected. While it started off relatively quiet, the wind gusts so high up are a lot stronger than you expected.

If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. You're able to play a bit of heroics and even manage to flame some Thread from one of your struggling fellows. Save Quote a wingmate and save them from damage!

With his head screwed on a little tighter than his straps had been shown to be, D'rok left the handling of the winds to Khazariath while he kept his eyes sharp around them - any Thread entering their airspace would definitely be spotted before it got too close!

Shards, any that entered the airspace of any of their fellow Weyrlings would also be spotted.

Things were going...reasonably well, all considered, right up until Maestoth bit his tongue. Then they were sent on another firestone run, and while I'zrin succeeded in making the toss, he wrenched his arm doing it. Worse, when they got back, they'd missed a change in formation! They very nearly collided with another pair, but I'zrin spotted the trouble just in time to redirect Maestoth to safer airspace.

Quote:

20. It's a bit of a mixed bag here. To start, your dragon bit his or her tongue while you were feeding them stone and now there's just a constant residual ache in both your mouths. While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. To make matters worse, you wound up missing a formation change, and almost had a mid-air collision with a fellow weyrling. [If this is your 3rd time rolling, you take -4 HP from all the tongue-biting and arm wrenching, and quote a Weyrling to take -5HP from damage

Once all that was sorted and behind them - though the embarrassment wasn't - things settled into how they ought to be. They got a bit ashed when the wind blew back at them, but when the time came to deliver firestone again, they did so without any incident.

Quote:

18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill. Gain +1 XP

V'res called for a new change in formation, but after their earlier troubles, both I'zrin and Maestoth were feeling...rather suspicious of the new plans, even though their near-mishaps had been the result of their own distraction rather than a bas call. Still, something just didn't feel right about the wind. No, there was a better move to make. With absolute confidence in their judgement, and certainty in his rightness, Maestoth relayed a different change than they had been ordered to - and, just as he and His had suspected, the wind changed!

If they'd gone with the original plan, things would have ended poorly. Alas, none of their classmates would ever know they'd saved them! What a pity.

Quote:

Wingsecond roll~

4. You're asked to give the order to change formation. You don't agree with what V'res has suggested. Do you give the order? Or do you risk giving a different one? Only you and the Wingleader know what was asked... So what are you going to do? Regardless of what your character decides, roll 1 through 2 to see if your actions are justified. If you roll a 1, quote three weyrlings and have them take -5 HP! If you roll a 2, quote three weyrlings and save them a roll's worth of damage!

They were on the last leg of their shift and Fi'dal could tell Arwainth was growing weary. They hung tight, though, but it was harder to be as lithe and evasive as they had been the whole time. Fi'dal glanced with a scowl towards the larger dragon they were helping to cover, wondering if he was just sailing along on the backs of the blues and greens protecting him.

Don't think such things, mine. Everyone is working hard and doing their best- ah!

Distracted, they both missed a bit of Thread that had slipped between the cracks. Arwainth jumped Between to rid herself of the silver strand, a small mark on her flank where it had been when they'd returned.

Things continued to be a struggle as they flew on. Arwainth bit her tongue to add insult to injury, the original ache from earlier in the session came back when Fi'dal botched a throw, and although they were still searing Thread from the sky they were definitely off their game, nearly colliding with a fellow weyrling. Thankfully they were almost done.

Things were wrapping up, thankfully, and Fi'dal was doubting himself once again. Was this really the right path? Was fighting Thread what he was destined for? Feeling and seeing Arwainth's joy and dedication to her training and her all-in approach to this first blooding let him know that she was certainly built for this. But was he?

A warmth enveloped him as Arwainth chased away the doubtful thoughts. It was all right to be nervous and scared. This was dangerous stuff they were dealing with, life and death quite literally. He couldn't expect to be perfect on their first go, right?

With that in mind, they returned to the weyr, relatively unhurt though with a first scar for their efforts. Despite his internal turmoil, Fi'dal knew that with experience they would surely shape up to be quite the pair.
