Luckily for his own image, Eduard's right hand wasn't visible by anyone in the ballroom.
After Rutherford passed, the Marquess's right hand was clenched into a tight fist.
If he hadn't been wearing gloves, the young man's hand would have been bleeding by now.
"A success..." Eduard spoke, his dark gaze falling on Peter.
It was an almost instantaneous change over the Marquess and he smiled, nodding.
"Did you think your acting would fail?" he asked in a whisper, smiling genuinely. "I never did."
There was another clap of thunder overhead, and the rain began to pour even heavier than before.
"Come on... let us get inside, mi'lady." he carefully led Peter back into the ballroom. "If you want, we can retire from this party. Well, if you have had your fill of dancing that is. If not... well... I am sure I can arrange something back at the manor."
Eduard wasn't sticking around. He had had quite enough of Rutherford... and soon... every noble in higher rank than a Viscount would want little to do with the lord of this manor.

P e t e r - W i n t e r s

Peter noticed the dark gaze on Eduard's face before it had disappeared. No doubt this man was just as good as acting as Peter was, if not better. Peter decided that he would ask about that later, when they were alone once again. Peter blushed at Eduard's comment. "Thank you..." Peter looked around him; the next dance was already starting. His feet were starting to hurt a little. Though he had worn women's shoes before, this was the first time that he had done so much dancing and movement in them. It was quite taxing on his feet.

"I am ready to leave, if that's what you want." He smiled. He could tell that Eduard was tired, though it didn't seem like he was weary of the party. There was something else that Peter was struggling to decipher, but Eduard's skilled cover-up made it very hard for the young actor. Peter started walking over to Rutherford hesitantly, Eduard in tow. "We should give our parting thanks to the host before we go."

He politely smiled as they approached Rutherford, noticing that he had on a sudden change in expression. It was almost smug. "Thank you, Viscount Rutherford, for inviting us here. I truly enjoyed myself, and I can probably say the same for Marquess Michaels." He curtsied and retreated a little to give Eduard the spotlight.

Rutherford smiled equally politely, his eyes trained more so on Eduard than on Rosaline. "It was my pleasure, dear Lady Rosaline. I'm delighted to know that you found this event to your liking; though it is a pity that I never had the chance to dance with you." He smirked slightly in Eduard's direction. "I'm sure that I'll have the chance to dance with you some other time." He leaned down and kissed Rosaline's hand, lingering a little more than necessary and looking very happy with himself.

((Ooo! Eduard's turning maniacal! He's plotting something... I love it! xD))

Eduard smiled to Peter, trying to seem like nothing in the world was amiss.
But he kept hearing Rutherford in his mind and seeing the man from the corner or his eyes.
'The nerve...' the Marquess thought to himself, but quietly followed after the Lady Rosaline as she gave her thanks to their host.
"We both had a splendid time, Viscount Rutherford." Eduard spoke, ever charming and ever cordial.
He seemed completely aloof to their earlier exchange.
"I do hope you will invite the Lady and myself to your next ball. We would be ever eager to attend." inclining his head slightly, obviously not going to bow to someone of lower station, especially Rutherford, Eduard carefully directed Peter to the side and past the man.
"Would you have danced with him?" the Marquess asked, his voice so soft and subtle that only Peter would have heard him.

Peter glanced up questioningly. That was an unexpected question. "What?" He couldn't process it for even a second. Being a little dense at times, he didn't quite understand why Eduard was asking such an odd question. "Well, if he had asked me, wouldn't I have to have danced with him?" Peter asked just as softly, the confusion written all over his face.

They made their way outside and the door guard called over their carriage. Peter let Eduard help him up and, still in the act, he sat next to Peter and leaned slightly into his arms. Truthfully, Peter was easily cold, and even though they had been inside a relatively hot room, the moment he got outside, the breeze combined with the rain had given him tiny shivers. And Eduard was surprisingly warm.

((By the way... I have no clue if he would be called a "door guard" or not. I'm kind of in a brain lag this morning, so... Sorry for the shortness of it.

Wow. You really were productive... I didn't know you wrote stuff for Tsubasa... I guess that's because I haven't actually had time to go and check out your fanfics. Gah! It's so busy around here!

Anyways, I'm guessing that you're feeling better, but get well anyways! I'm glad that you're back.))

Eduard carefully positioned himself so that his body accepted most of the raindrops until they had an umbrella opened. He aided Peter in getting into the carriage and only when it was speeding down the road did he finally speak.
Though it seemed that he spoke simply for the sake of getting his mind off of the road and the weather.
"You could have refused him, you know. Explained that the dance had been promised to another, such as myself." he smiled slightly, though there was an obvious fear in his dark purple gaze.
In truth, Eduard felt ill. He was warm, very warm, and he knew why.
When Rutherford had been with him, when Eduard had asked that single servant for some hot tea...
'I never should have done that with him there. Of course the servants would spike anything being drunk by a guest before their lord.' the Marquess thought angrily.
Thus, he had been forced to retreat from that particular battlefield. But the war was far from over.
"Rutherford may come calling in the next few days." Eduard spoke softly, his skin paler than usual. "When he does, make sure you are indisposed, Peter. Please. If there is one man to be wary of, to want to keep this secret from... it is Rutherford." he laughed softly, "Well, and my father of course."

(((I write stuff for tons o' stuff. I just put up a story for "Moon Child" today. Yay for my Gackt fangirl-ness! As to your "door guard", I'd have gone with doorman, but that works too, hehehe. The shortness is no problem, and my back's feeling better, just sometimes annoying. I want to put a cold wrap on it but they don't make them fit-able for the chest (since it's my ribs that are hurting and, yeah... boobs kinda in the way).)))

Peter glanced up at Eduard, trying to decipher the emotions that he had at the moment. Peter was surprised when he was met with evident fear in those dark eyes. Attempting to make the mood a little lighter, he chuckled. "What, were you jealous?" He smiled, though starting to worry a little that Eduard was this warm. Getting a little more serious, he added, "Of course, if that's what you want. You are my employer after all."

Peter was very curious about the history between Eduard and Rutherford, but figured that this wasn't the best time to ask. But what made Eduard so wary of Rutherford? Knowing that would probably motivate Peter more to be out of Rutherford's way if he ever decided to drop in. And he couldn't help but feel that Eduard was protecting him from something and probably throwing himself in instead, like he did with the rain. Peter ground his teeth together.

"Eduard—" He had glanced up and finally saw how pale Eduard was. He was also sweating a fair amount. Immediately, his hand went up to caress Eduard's burning cheek. Peter's hands were cold, as was his whole body. With deep concern in his voice, he murmured, "You've fallen ill..."

((I wish I had more time to write! There's been this one story of mine that's been dying to get out of my head, but I haven't had time to write it down yet... How did you hurt your back?))

"I am fine, Peter." Eduard spoke softly, carefully removing Peter's hand from his cheek and holding it between his own two. "You are near frozen, that is all."
It was a subtle movement as Eduard drew Peter closer, holding the actor against him in an attempt to try and warm the man's icy limbs. He shrugged out of the coat he had been wearing, draping it around Peter.
"I am not jealous of Rutherford, far from it." the Marquess explained, glad to have something else to focus on besides the carriage ride home. "He suspects something, though what it is I know not yet. I am simply warning you, Peter. I do not want you caught up in a power struggle... for Rutherford has made no true attempt to hide his want of dragging me from my station." Eduard smiled softly, "Do not trouble yourself over the matter."

(((Hehehe, I think I answered the back hurt question in my pm to you... if I didn't, tell me and I will. As for time to write, I wish I DIDN'T have the time really. Or rather, wish I had time every once in a while, not all day. But today I haven't really felt like writing, so I just posted up a prologue to another story instead.)))

Peter was about to argue about Rutherford but decided that there were more pressing matters to deal with at the moment. Plus, he really couldn't talk at the moment, a little flustered at his position. He wasn't sure if it was him or Rosaline, but Eduard's firm grasp on him felt so... comforting. He relaxed into Eduard's arms.

"You're not fine. You're burning up, dear. I'm sure that you have fallen ill." He had let that little term slip out by accident, not even realizing it; goes to show how good of an actor Peter was. "You need to get some rest when we get back." Peter would make sure that that happened.

And they arrived right as he said that. As usual, he let Eduard help him out of the carriage, then they both proceeded inside. Sebastian immediately whisked both Eduard and Peter off to their respective rooms to change into some more comfortable and dry clothing. Peter found his room by himself easily enough and changed quickly. He remembered the way to Eduard's room and rushed himself there right after he had finished, wanting to make sure that Eduard was not straining himself doing anything.

((Still, at least you jot down things. All I do is the necessary school work and RPing... hehe... And you did tell me in the PM, though I checked that after I had checked the post... Would this be the time for Eduard to do something that Peter could burst into? xD))

"I will be fine with a little rest." Eduard replied softly, his gaze obviously trying to be reassuring.
As the carriage sped toward the Michaels manor, Eduard said nothing more. He continued to hold gently onto Peter, trying to keep the young man warm.

Sebastian ushered both men into the manor, quickly alerting the servants to make some warm soup and hot tea, knowing that his lord and guest were probably chilled to the bone.

For his part, Eduard was soaked through from the rain. He was valiantly keeping himself from shivering, but just barely. Once Peter had disappeared down a nearby corridor, and only then, did Eduard's body begin to show more severe signs of fever.
Shivering, the Marquess accepted Sebastian's aid in removing his wet clothes. He grabbed a towel, trying to dry his hair, but soon Sebastian took the towel from his lord and began to do it himself.
"See to Peter." Eduard spoke, ushering Sebastian away before collapsing into an arm chair before his fireplace.
Luckily, it had been lit just before their arrival at the mansion.
Dressed now in somewhat loose dark pants and an unbuttoned white shirt, Eduard closed his eyes and simply tried to will his feverish body to sleep.

(((I hope him shirtless helps?)))

P e t e r - W i n t e r s

Peter had seen Sebastian walking down the hallway towards him. Peter had gotten out of his wig and fake breasts, and Sebastian didn't even look the slightest surprised to see him as such. Peter simply explained that he was already finished with all the baths, drying and changing; now he was just taking his time exploring the manor. Sebastian left Peter alone after that and he continued his way to Eduard's room.

He entered very quietly, having the stealth of someone who had to walk around off the stage without making a single noise for years and years, and saw no sign of Eduard. There was one chair facing the fireplace and Peter approached very silently. He picked up a relatively dry towel from Eduard's bed and sneaked his way to the back of Eduard's chair. He leaned over the top, it reaching his chest, and started drying Eduard's still wet hair. "I know that you are sick. Do not try to hide it from me," he murmured very softly, his voice tender and sweet, as if he was teaching a small child the right ways to do things.

((That's great.))

Strangely enough, Eduard didn't jump or become startled when he felt Peter's hands in his hair.
In truth, the man seemed to relax even more against the chair.
The Marquess tried to speak, but everything that came to his fevered mind hardly helped his position.
I'm not sick...
It was the tea I asked for at the ball...
I'm fine...
You're worrying about nothing, Peter...
Every single excuse that came to mind however, was dashed quickly by one simple thing.
Honesty.
"Then I'll not hide it..." Eduard whispered, his eyes closed, blatant honesty shining through.
He trusted Peter, and that in itself was remarkable.
The Marquess' skin was incredibly pale, sweat beading his forehead, and yet he couldn't move, couldn't even think of moving.
He was exhausted... that much was obvious.

P e t e r - W i n t e r s

On the one hand, Peter was glad that Eduard was finally telling the truth, but on the other hand, somewhere deep in his mind, Peter didn't want to have the fact confirmed, and now that it was, he didn't feel all too happy. Peter stopped once he felt that Eduard's hair was sufficiently dry. He walked around to face Eduard and knelt down by his chair with a very worried expression.

"You should lay down and get some rest... And even though I know that you are loath to move, but you'll feel better. Trust me." His voice was very gentle with no hint of his previous shyness or stutters. It was either the situation that was affecting him, or being around Eduard was already changing him.

Peter also felt horrible, blaming himself for this situation. After all, he didn't know about the tea that Eduard had drank, so in his mind, it was still the rain's doing. If Peter wasn't there, then Eduard probably wouldn't have gone to that ball, and therefore not have gotten sick. "I'm sorry..." he murmured softly.

Dark purple eyes, made even darker by the fever, opened just a tad to lock onto Peter. "Do not apologize." Eduard spoke, his voice feather soft.
The Marquess stood, grasping the edge of the chair to keep himself from stumbling. The room about him spun, his mind dizzy.
Such a feeling infuriated him.
"Rutherford overheard me order something to drink from the staff. It was drugged." Eduard revealed, smiling at Peter. "I am simply happy it was not you who drank it."
Eduard knew of Rutherford's love of lose lips, and he also knew of the man's love for beautiful women.
Even women who sometimes did not wish to comply with his wants and subsequent needs.
The Marquess himself had never actually been on the receiving end of such a drug before and thus, was rather amazed at how hard it affected his body.
His mind was slower, his limbs unwilling to cooperate.
So unwilling, in fact, that he stumbled and collapsed into Peter.

P e t e r - W i n t e r s

Peter let out a little squeak of surprise when Eduard fell into him. Now he could really feel Eduard's heat. It was actually quite comfortable once one got past how awkward this situation was between two men... Peter felt compelled to just stay as he was, but Eduard was burning up, and in the morning, he would probably kill Peter if he remembered this ever happening. It was damning to a man's pride to let this happen willingly.

So Peter struggled out from underneath Eduard and started dragging him to the bed which, thankfully, was close by. He tried to pull Eduard in the most comfortable way possible, though no way was really 'comfortable.'

Eventually, he reached the bed and managed with one strong yank to lift up Eduard to a relative standing position, though he wasn't supporting himself, making them both lose balance and land on Eduard's bed, in relatively the same position as they had been on the ground, but at least now Eduard could be a little more comfortable and warm.

The blankets were tucked at the bottom of the bed. Peter tried to worm his way out like he had done before, but found himself really stuck this time. He could barely even budge. At least his feet were out enough that he could manipulate the blankets using his legs. Eventually, he resigned to struggling, figuring that Eduard couldn't really blame him for this in the morning. He had genuinely tried to escape.

Though with both Eduard and the blanket over him, he was getting quite hot, though he was sure that Eduard was feeling cold. He found that it was easier to cope with the heat if he thought about Eduard being cold and possessing of a fever.

Semi-conscious, Eduard tried to open his eyes again.
But any bit of light hurt terribly, and the glaring dance of the fire had done nothing but pain his sight earlier.
"Peter..." he whispered, knowing that the young man was helping him try and get into bed.
But was he really in bed?
Was he still sitting down... standing up...
Confused, the Marquess attempted to push himself up, but he felt a body beneath him.
'How odd...' he thought to himself, turning his head and hearing a heart beating in his ears.
Was that his own heartbeat?
He was exhausted... cold... but warm... incredibly warm, almost stifling so...
"I'm sorry..." Eduard whispered, managing to just barely move his body so that he was laying next to Peter instead of on top of the actor.
His head however, remained on the man's chest, dark hair in stark contrast to pale features and feverish cheeks.
However, the young lord found it impossible to move further. One lithe hand reached up, the arm over Peter's stomach and the hand resting against the man's side, deliriously craving the cooler body that lay beside him.
