Well... I brought our old dog to the vet to be put down yesterday. crying He was about 15, he rarely could get up the stairs of our house, he would spend most his time sleeping, and lately he was laying on the floor with his tongue out and drooling. He was turning down meat (if you know him, that is amaixing). When you would go up to him and touch him he would cry, and that just killed me. I think he knew it was time. When I brought him into the vet, he just layed his head on my arm and let them do their thing and fell asleep with no problems. It's horrible loosing an animal, especially one we had for 10 years and that grew up with my kids. But I know it was for the best, he was going down hill for the past few months really fast.

I know how you feel, I too had a dog for 16 years and had to put him down. It was the hardest thing i had to do. I said no more pets then 2 years later i ended up with two cats which then turned into 6 cats. then last year(2005) i had to put three down , one in september the 2nd (my favorite) in october then" little bit" in may of last year, they all got sick from different things . that was a horrible 6 months the sadness does lessen but you never forget them. they are always in your heart. my sympathy goes out to you...

So sorry Jo. I had to have our 16 year old dog put down when my parents were on holiday, and we'd had him since he was 6 days old, so I know how tough it is. It looks like he was a real character though, and I'm sure you'll have many, many good memories.

Hugs for Lil-Jo ~ my thoughts go out to you and your family. It's very hard to put a family pet down, and hard to hang on to them when you know they are suffering. He looks like he was a very sweet and lovable character. May your sadness go swiftly, and your fond memories stay strong. heart

thank you all...
I had many memories come back when I was sure it had to be done... like the fact than when we first got him he was an overweight beagle (he was found in an apartment after neighbors were complaining about the noise and smell, he was found there with ripped open bags of food and crap all around). My daughter had promised to walk him and help him loose weight. He would pull so strong on the leash to what ever he would smell that she could not control him. He would eat anything. He climbed up on to the table to get my Taco Bell dinner one day (with his size it was amazing he could climb up to anything), he ate a full basket of easter candy, anything that he could smell would be gone. We would have exchange students and other guests that we would have to warn to keep anything edible out of reach... Buddy would climb things that we thought were impossible and end up eating things they would bring or buy while they were staying with us. He was my daughter's dog and he would sleep with her every night until she became an older teenager. She would dress him up, have me make sweaters for him, she even gave him henna tattoos. He had surgery on his eyes many times for cherry-eye, he had his head tore open by a mastif twice (he did not learn very easily that he was smaller than her but he could not control the attitude around her). He rode across half the country twice. He would get an icecream cone once every spring (his favorite treat). Plus many other great memories.
