I'm actually so bad at straight lines that even rulers don't help me emotion_facepalm Case in point: in my 7th grade pre-algebra class, we had a project in which we were assigned "roommates" and the group was to draw floor plans for a house they would all live in. The floor plans for the house my "roomies" and I drew up was crooked as ******** despite having access to various sizes of rulers to make sure the lines were straight. They were straight alright... straight up 40 degree angles or someshit emotion_facepalm It looked pretty bad when hung up along side the rest of the floor plans.

Going to start blocking in the flat colors on Icy's piece shortly. I've also done a partial initial sketch for Psy's
auction piece. Won't be doing any more with it until after I finish Icy's, but Ry's going to be in there somewhere and I haven't decided on Psy's clothes yet.

Edit: For whatever reason, I decided to go back and re-read some older posts in this thread. Original plans for the Icy piece I'm working on now involved thigh high boots with garters as opposed to the knee high ones I drew. Think I'm going to go ahead and switch that to the thigh highs and garters ninja

I'm planning on skipping over the inking stage and going straight to coloring to see if I can do "line-less". I know Vita and possibly some other artists recommended it to me as a way to cut down on time so we'll see how that goes. I'm also working with a much much larger canvas than I usually do which makes the digital sketch look practically inked anyway. Not sure why I didn't think of doing so sooner. I can't draw a straight line to save my life and having a huge canvas helps cover that up a little.
emotion_drool .....just emotion_drool She actually does look like you're in the inking stage. And BONZAI to thigh highs and garters. emotion_yatta Of course I'd forgotten about that as well. I'll probably do the same and go back over old posts Got into my PB finally and came across avis I'd made and forgotten, now my level of want for art is at an all time high. emotion_facepalm Which I find crazy since I haven't done anything with my characters in years. I truly don't want them to disappear, which may be why I constantly want art of them. Not sure right now. I think whatever shred of imagination and storytelling abilities I had died somewhere along these last years of inactivity. xp

First pass of shading

Wasn't sure if I wanted to share WIPs this time since it'll look pretty weird until the edges are better smoothed and defined in the later stages, but figured I would show it anyway just as a way of saying that I haven't lost my motivation yet. I will add more white back into the fur parts later, but it'll probably get darker before it gets lighter. Going to see if I can color it halfway decent myself this time instead of using the fur brush I used for the IcyXVicious piece.

I haven't even put in the highlights yet emotion_awesome

I remain baffled as to why you had so much trouble getting art in the past due to skin tone since it's by far one of the most enjoyable tones to shade. Extreme white and extreme black are the more difficult shades to color and Icy is neither. She's right in between so she gets the best range of shading -and- highlights.

Icy Reign

Started work on the face. Something about the lips is bothering me and I can't figure out what it is.
User Image

Considering trying to thin out the upper lip and maybe move the lips closer up to the nose. I already moved them up once and that made it look a little better but it still looks off to me. I might have also added too much volume altogether in my pursuit of trying to fix them... I'm not entirely sure on that point yet.

To me, it looks like the lips are a bit off-center, not lined up with the nasal septum.

Outside of what Faerie said, I see no problem with her lips. I love luscious, voluptuous lips, and these are definitely it! emotion_dowant Have I told you how much I appreciate the fact that you always take time to "paint" her nails? emotion_kirakira

Painted nails just seems appropriate. emotion_awesome

Being off center was actually my first thought but somehow or another I convinced myself that wasn't the problem when apparently it is emotion_facepalm I'll mess with it later to see if it looks better without taking any volume from the lips. What tends to make it look weird is when it's not such a close up. Zoomed out to about the size of the first two WIPs, the face looks all sorts of weird and I'm hoping that will be fixed in the final stages when I'm sharpening edges and putting in the darkest shadows and all that jazz.

Current WIP

Starting to feel I would have finished this by now had I just gone with the shading method I'd been using for pieces lately {such as TesVTes} but it's been a long time since I've used this method. I plan to go back later and better blend it all together, but for now I'm just trying to define the shapes and gradients. I had a hell of a time with the midsection for some reason. I've apparently forgotten how to shape it emotion_facepalm

After looking at a few pictures of women with exposed midriffs, strictly for research purposes of course ninja , I determined my real problem was that I had added in way too much contrast for the contours, so I completely washed over the area with close to skin tone and am gradually working the shadows back in much more subtly. Will probably post another WIP later today.

Trying to get the initial shading done before bothering with another WIP and thought I would have it done sooner, but that lazy artist part of me is starting to kick in. A rotation of Korn, Rammstein, Orgy, and System of a Down seems to mostly keep me on task as long as no one tries to talk to me, though.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 21, 2015 11:35 pm

Alright, so what's been going on: contrary to what the previous post might have suggested, it's not simply a bout of lazy artist syndrome. The fans on my graphics card had been louder than usual and one day I opened my case and found one of them wasn't even working anymore. It was still under warranty luckily so I sent it in to have the fans replaced. Unfortunately, my motherboard has no on board graphics and thus I can't use my monitor with it, making the computer completely unusable without the graphics card. I tried to put in the card from my old computer, but it's so old that it just wasn't compatible with the newer equipment or windows 7 and even started to cause other things to not work. Hopefully none of that is permanent stare

So at the moment, I'm on my old computer, which itself is kind of on its last legs. There's a fan in it that struggles to keep moving, it's still running windows xp which is no longer supported by a lot of sites and programs, so I can't use things like youtube and netflix, and the hard drive has seen much better days. I transferred the .psd file intending to continue working on it while on this computer even though there's a lesser version of photoshop on it figuring the difference wouldn't be that huge since I used this computer and this version of photoshop for ******** like... 8 years or some s**t? Possibly as much as 10. Anyhow, pressure levels on the tablet don't work as well, lines don't come out as smooth, and photoshop {among other programs} randomly freeze up, making working with this relic actually a bit frustrating at times.

I remember all the random freezing being kind of a staple with this computer all along and maybe it's just that I'm used to having a computer that actually works correctly, but it really seems worse now than it was before. The huge file also doesn't help {I always worked with smaller files on this computer because of it's inability to process things very quickly}. So I think I'm just going to put off finishing the Icy piece until I get my graphics card back. I might take another look at what's left on my backlog and see if there's anything I wouldn't mind at least starting on this version of photoshop and on a smaller file. I want to actually finish that backlog this year goddammit stressed

Edit: Okay, so looking at the backlog, things I could potentially do are Kits' sketch and Akiba's flat color piece. I'll need details from Kits on what she wants and Akiba probably will never see hers and has likely long forgotten about it, but I'm one stubborn ********>

I hope there's no permanent damage. That would really suck like hell. I think everyone has that one "on its last legs" device, be it a computer, radio, etc. Even though you have a newer one, you still keep the old one around, collecting dust. Icy has never had a problem waiting, and has none now. When it's done, it's done, and I know it'll be awesome as usual. emotion_awesome Here's to clearing that backlog this year. emotion_brofist

Ah, Akiba. Wherefore art thou and when whilst thee be back? If she hasn't been around since before all this inflation and whatnot, she'd probably flip her s**t when she sees the prices on the mp. Ha, I just remembered that piece she drew when you were trying to get an image for Miro. That's where the sketch comes in at. Now to got look for that thread and see that drawing.
