((Hey, it's something I can work with, and that's the most important thing. And lol about the "friendly" embrace xd ))
As Oliver hurried towards Anna, suddenly everything started happening all at once. She turned and saw him, then screamed something he couldn't understand in all the hubbub, especially with the loud crumbling sound that came from somewhere to the side. Even as he whipped his head around to see what she was looking at with such a horrified expression, someone knocked him right over and pushed him against the ground.
From the floor, Oliver saw to his horror that a pillar had fallen in his direction, but his horror turned to shock when the boy holding him down somehow sucked the falling debris away as if his hand had become a miniature black hole. Before he could struggle away from this mutant that to his surprise looked completely unfamiliar, Anna snatched him up and hugged him. Hugged him?
For a second, Oliver forgot about the power cut and the danger from the falling pillars and rushing crowds, as all of his attention became focused on Anna's arms wrapped tightly around him in relief. He hugged her back automatically, feeling a strange heat filling his whole body - a pleasant heat, like wrapping cold fingers around a mug of hot chocolate.
With what felt like a massive effort of will, Oliver broke away from Anna and forced his mind back to the present. Even so, it took him a moment to respond to her question, a moment where he could only stare at her. "Th-They went to see if they could figure out why the lights went out," he said, his voice sounding distant to his own ears.
Then another pillar crumbled away, and a portion of the floor above began to sag, then cave in. Several people who'd been standing there screamed as they fell to the floor and began to tip sideways as the floor gave way. Adrenaline rushed through Oliver, clearing his head again, and he sprang into action. They had to save those people. Throwing open the barriers he'd learned to place in the way of his powers, Oliver sprang towards a potted tree next to a fountain that decorated a small sitting area. He thrust his fingers into the moist dirt in the pot and pushed his powers out, intending to make the branches shoot out and prop up the breaking section of the floor above.
But...nothing happened. Oliver desperately pushed again, then looked down at his hand. It was firmly buried in the soil, and after quickly rubbing the trunk of the tree, he knew it was a real plant and not just a plastic imitation. What was wrong? Why didn't his powers work? He desperately pushed for his power, but it was like turning a tap on all the way during a water cut - no effect at all.
He whipped his head up again to the few screaming people clinging to the edge, and just as it seemed they would surely fall and break a few bones at the very least, a strong jet of water burst out and pushed the section of the floor back into place. Oliver turned in surprise to see a girl about his own age with her blonde hair pulled into a short ponytail standing next to the fountain, which had shut off with the rest of the power. One hand dangled over the side into the water, and the other stretched out, all her fingers pointing towards the screaming people. High-pressure water spurted from every fingertip, combining into one large jet of water that held up the floor long enough for the shoppers to scramble shakily to their feet and rush off to safety. Then the girl let her hand drop, and as the water shut off, the floor finally collapsed at last with an almighty crash.
The girl strode over to the other mutants. "You okay?" she asked them briskly. Oliver could only gape and nod.

At least Oliver was safe and at least Luke and Valon were together. It was convenient that this boy, whoever he was showed up when he did or Oliver could have been squashed. It was strange that all this was happening...the lights going out and now structures giving way causing mayhem and destruction, sounds more like a training sim, but this definitely wasn’t one of them. Anna knew they weren’t supposed to use her powers unless there was an emergency and this was definitely one of them. Surely the Professor and the others would let this slide...and hopefully be along with back up soon...
“Thanks for saving him; I don’t know what I would have done.”Anna was, sort of, after all supposed to be looking after Oliver as a request from the Professor, so if anything happened to him she’d be blamed (well not really but it’d be frowned upon).
Turning towards the sound of screaming voices and more pillars falling, the floor caving in from underneath, Anna sprung into action like Oliver to save the civilians. However, she let him have the first go at the nearest accident while the boy who saved Oliver, wasn’t too far away helping other people without another word. Anna thought she’d make herself useful move people to a more secure area, some place where the walls and floors weren’t crumbling underneath them. She had the utmost confidence that Oliver could handle himself for a while so she intended to move people to safety.
Her thought process was cut off when the floor started to cave in and a little kid had slipped and was being dragged down into the opening, his mother frantically screaming for help. Saving that little boy was top priority, so turning in the direction Anna ran towards the cave in and leapt into the air slightly near the edge of the opening. But for some reason she wasn’t floating at all, she was falling into the hole herself.
Instead of letting the boy fall to his doom and probably die or break a few bones, Anna grabbed him and held him tightly in her arms as the two fell. She thought that maybe if she couldn’t fly she could create a wind pillow for when they landed, but while she was thinking about moving the air currents below her nothing happened. Now she was scared...more scared than she’d ever been in her life; before the two fell to their doom Anna noticed they’d stopped falling and were being pulled back upwards. Were her powers working? No, it was that boy again using his own powers to suck the two back up like a vacuum except not as strong.
Once on solid ground, both feet firmly on the floor, Anna put the boy down and watched him run and cry to his mother. “Well, aren’t you the superhero today?” she looked at him again, thanking him for saving her and the boy wondering what was going on. She’d never experienced such fear before...her powers have never not worked for her and her hands were still shaking from the traumatic experience. “You must think I’m some kind of creep for trying to save that kind but I’m serious when I say I’m a mutant like you...just...my powers aren’t working for some reason...” she looked away, rather ashamed, hiding her gaze behind her black bangs trying to control the shaky feeling.
Finally, the mysterious boy spoke and shrugged giving off that cool, mysterious, strong, ignorant type, “don’t worry about it I’m sure you were just nervous.” He said walking her back to her friend seeing his own teammate there. “You done showing off?” he crossed his arms as they approached, looking at Aria with a raised brown.
Anna sort of unconsciously moved over to Oliver, standing by him while letting the two talk, it seemed that they knew each other which meant both of them were mutants - mutants that definitely didn’t go to their school.

As Anna disappeared into the hole, Oliver once again frantically tried to make the stupid tree grow, but there was still that awful emptiness as he groped for his power and felt nothing. There was nothing he could do to help or save anyone.
It was a good thing these other mutants had shown up, whoever they were. Oliver hurried to Anna's side when the boy brought her back up again, tempted to return the embrace of a minute ago. But there was no time for that now. "Your powers aren't working either?" he asked worriedly in an undertone. For once, he wished it could have just been a sign of his own incompetence.
But before they could say anything more, the other mutants came up to them. "I wasn't showing off," the girl snapped in a tone that indicated they'd had similar arguments plenty of times before. "I did what I had to. But you have a point; we need to get out of here. Now."
Oliver glanced around and realized how many people had seen their little stunt. Even if he hadn't been able to make anything grow, the others had certainly been obvious with their powers. Things could get nasty, fast. Their only consolation was that it was so dim no one could see their faces unless they got up close.
Just then Luke and Valon came rushing up, out of breath. "We heard lots of screaming...." Luke began, trailing off as his eyes lingered on the ruins of the pillar and floor. He swore softly, almost absent-mindedly.

"Damn, quite a mess in 'ere. What 'appened? we left you lot for five minutes and 'alf the mall falls apart." Valon was looking at all the wreckage that'd happened under their watch. He probably wouldn't have been able to be any good help but at least no one was severly hurt. While looking over to Oliver and Anna who were suprisingly quiet, he noticed the new girl that was with them and found her quite attractive...
"You're right, let's get out of here. The next thing we need is the cops coming after us or someone recognizing our faces." Inspite of all that happened Anna tried to maintain a leadership perspective on things and turned towards one of the emergancy exits running out with the others. But even when they were out she still ran decently far in case they were found out...by their teachers which was worse than cops. They stopped at some sort of large park like place standing under a couple of large trees waiting to catch their breath. "The police and emergancy vehicles should be arriving soon to fix the problem...did you guys even find out what the problem was?" Anna asked turning to her group mates.
Valon, who had his hands on his knees while breathing heavily was the one to start explaining, "we didn't find much, just some massive cables in the power room were totally fried. W'atever caused the grounds to collapse must have been another mutant."
While sharing theories, the new boy that had saved Anna's and the little kid's life moved closer to her and grabbed her arm, motioning to the scratch on her shoulder. While running she didn't even notice that it was bleeding slightly, probably from when she fell. "You need to cover that up, and you might want to look in a mirror..." Pulling her arm away from him she didn't worry too much about the wound and although she was grateful for saving her life she didn't want to get too comfortable around these stranges. Curious about what he meant she reached into her inner sweater pocket to grab her ipod and looked at her reflection. Seems one of her contacts must have fallen out either while they were running or in all of the commotion.
Slightly embarassed she turned around and quickly removed the other one and threw it on the ground somewhere, looking at the others with her normal clear empty eyes. "Well, like I said, thanks for saving us but we don't even know who you are."
"Mickey. Pleasure." He said looking to the other two boys then at Oliver.

The boys all introduced themselves and the blonde girl finished with, "The name's Aria." She smiled now that the danger was past, and even with a sopping shirt sleeve she was fairly attractive.
"So where you from?" Luke asked, and as Oliver turned to look at him he saw that the boy had kept tight hold on the bags holding his ultraviolet lamps. Seemed he wasn't keen on giving them up. "I don't remember seeing you around the school. New or something?"
Not the way they were using their powers, Oliver thought, but Aria smiled again before he could say it.
"Do we look like greenhorns to you?" she asked with just a touch of scorn - such a small amount that Oliver was sure he'd imagined it. "You're from Xavier's school, right? Well, he might not have told you, but that's not the only mutant school in the country."
Oliver stared at her in surprise. "It's not?"
Giving him a pitying look, Aria shook her head and looked at Mickey as if asking him to back her up. "You can't ask kids to go hundreds and hundreds of miles just to get an education."

Everyone knew that there were more schools out there for mutants, but what Anna or the Professor didn’t tell him was that the heads of the schools always fought to gain control of the new mutants that came up. Professor X just got to Oliver before the others, while people like Anna just happened to be saved or stumble upon the school out of desperation.
“We come from a school far away; we’re on spring break like the rest of you.” Mickey said keeping his oh so cool attitude that had the ladies dropping like flies for him. “We just happened to be around when the place was coming down just like the rest of you.” He didn’t want to mention in front of their friends that for some reason Anna and Oliver’s powers stopped working. It wasn’t any of his business but he found it strange...It was his job to help save them but he was pretty sure the files said they were perfectly capable to save themselves.
Anna didn’t say very much while they were talking, probably because she was a flutter trying to figure out why her powers stopped working. Keeping her hands to her sides she found out she could swirl wind currents around her hands but wasn’t able to hold it for very long... “Well,” she started after they all had their little time to chat, “let’s get out of here, and grab something to eat since the better part of our day is ruined.” Unlike Luke she’d completely forgotten her things were left behind at the mall...either someone would steal them or they were crushed by the debris...how depressing but that was life.
“You guys should join us as a thank you for saving us and all. Maybe even meet some of our professors.” To Anna they didn’t seem all bad, besides they saved them even if their attitude was a little bit less to be desired, still she was grateful.
“So! Where we ‘oing then? Chinese? American style? Italian? Greek? Japanese?” Valon sounded more cheery, throwing his arms behind his head, also keeping track of his belongings in the large bags he brought with him. Deciding not to open her mouth for a while, Anna grabbed Oliver’s wrist gently while they stood around trying to decide. “Don’t feel so alarmed...I actually have to pretend I’m blind since I don’t have my contacts...”she whispered. She’d never really been so forward, nor has there ever been anyone to be forward with. Losing her powers was difficult for her since it was all she really had that kept her a bit sane at the school.

Oliver was surprised to hear that there were other mutant schools, but he supposed he shouldn't be. Due to the whole controversy and stigma against mutants, you didn't hear too much about them, and Oliver supposed they generally kept a low profile to escape the discrimination. Still, he should have realized that the hundred or so teenagers in Xavier's school couldn't be the only mutant teenagers in the whole country. Mutations were rare enough, but among all the millions of people in this country, there were bound to be more than that.
"Oh, thanks!" Aria said in response to Anna's suggestion. "We'd love to see what your school's like, right Mickey?" Her face was alight with interest, seemingly forgetting her slight scorn from before. "It would be really interesting to compare, and of course Xavier is really famous."
The boys, however, seemed more interested in discussing what kind of food they were going to eat, though Oliver didn't really care one way or another. Aria got pulled into the conversation, suggesting hamburgers, till Luke began expounding on the dangers of junk food and trans fat, and they started down the street, continuing their hearty discussion and pointing out possibilities as they went.
Oliver looked at Anna in surprise when she took his wrist, and felt his cheeks grow slightly warm again. "Huh?" Then he glanced at her pale eyes. "Oh, yeah," he said in an undertone as they followed the others at the back of the group. "I see what you mean." His stomach squirmed in an oddly pleasant way when their arms brushed against each other briefly as they walked. Mainly to try to keep his mind away from how her touch made him feel - because then he'd really start blushing - he said the first thing that came to mind. "Hey, um...I hope you don't mind if I ask, but...why do your eyes look like that?"

Mickey knew the mission and knew that this was the perfect opportunity to get into Xavier’s school. He couldn’t object to Anna’s ‘kind’ invitation. “Our school is nothing sophisticated like yours, just full of a bunch of mutant brutes who like to show off their powers at any given opportunity.” He commented as he followed behind them. He didn’t mind where they ate, deciding not to take part in the choosing since it really didn’t matter to him. Mickey wasn’t surprised that Aria had suggested Hamburgers. They were good and all but it wasn’t often they got to have fancy food while they were out. One of the boys, Luke seemed to have a bit of a man spaz about how much Trans fat was in it and all. Like he really cared about his appearance, surely that was more of a girl thing...
“If you’re worried about that why don’t we get Japanese, unless you have a problem with eating raw fish?” Mickey suggested. After all Japanese food didn’t require much oil other than the few things that were deep fried.
While the four of them discussed what they should have for dinner while still waiting for them to decide, Oliver and Anna seemed to have their own conversation in private. When they took off somewhere down the park path, Anna still gently holding onto Oliver’s arm looking straight and as blank as possible he couldn’t help but ask her a personal question or two. Anna didn’t turn her head when he asked and continued to look straight ahead while answering in a calm yet monotone type of voice. It was basically the same voice she used back at the school when she spoke and was usually alone and emotionless. “I was born like this. Everyone thought I was blind and found it creepy so I decided to wear colour contacts to blend in. But with my eyes I can see the wind currents I control, like a heat sensor for wind...” that last part didn’t make sense but she tried.
Hopefully he’d be satisfied with the answer, not too many people were. A lot of mutants had deformities that needed getting used to, and this was one of them. Still staring into space, and looking like she had nothing on her mind Anna just had to open up and ask. “Is it...normal for your arm to get all sweaty and hot when a girl holds your hand...or wrist in this case?” she tried not to laugh while keeping a straight face. Anna could tell he was a bit nervous, trembling very slightly every now and then trying not to act so tense.

Luke only smiled at the mention of raw fish, but waited to see what the others' responses were. When everyone seemed willing enough to give it a try, he said, "Japanese it is. I think I remember a place up here...." He began to lead the way.
So, Oliver thought, she always knew she was different. He wondered if it would have been better to know all along, or if it was good he hadn't found out until only recently, so he could have a normal childhood, at least. But he wasn't about to ask her, just in case.
Lost in thought as they walked along, he could never have been prepared for her question and instantly flushed as red as a rose. "Wha- Um- N- I...well...." He stuttered, trying to find some way to answer, grateful at least that she wasn't looking at him and that the others were too far ahead and talking too loudly to hear them. "I just...I mean, you don't have to hold...if you don't want-" Then he awkwardly attempted to make some kind of explanation for his behavior. "Still kind of nervous about what happened in the mall," he said with a short laugh that didn't sound real at all.

Despite Anna’s cheery attitude (at least that’s what it seemed like) she was also pretty torn up about what happened in the mall and didn’t want to think about it. Was it possible that mutant powers could go away? She couldn’t picture herself living a normal life after all she went through; even though she’d probably be accepted she just couldn’t deal with it. “I’m sure it was just a freak accident and we weren’t prepared, nothing to get all serious about...” she muttered still trying not to remember the feeling and think of something more pleasant. Right now she’d really rather be back in her bedroom, trying to sleep and pretend it was all a bad dream.
Anna had completely forgotten about the remark Oliver had made that made him turn bright red when their companions stopped in front of a Japanese Restaurant, slowly making their way in to see if there were any tables left.
The group was seated near the back where it was more spacious since there were a few of them. Anna sat across Luke at the end, Valon and Oliver beside him, and Mickey and Aria beside Anna on the opposite side.
“Oii mate,” Valon whispered while pretending to look at the menu like the others were, “I ‘eard bout ‘ow you and Anna couldn’t use your powers..s’it true? ‘hat ‘appened? You freeze up or something?”
On the other side of the table where Anna, Mickey and Aria were sitting, the two were discussing amongst themselves what to eat but from time to time Mickey would ask Aria what their next plan of action should be.

"Yeah...right...." Oliver mumbled, his embarrassment ebbing away as he thought again dejectedly about how his power just wasn't there. He'd never imagined he could get so worried about something he'd never wanted in the first place. But he'd just begun to get used to his powers, just begun to control them and hone them to actually be potentially useful! And now, were they being taken away?
But Anna wasn't worried about it. Maybe this happened occasionally. He was just freaking out because he was still new. Yeah, that had to be it. They just weren't ready for all that excitement in the mall. When they went into the simulations, they always knew the kinds of things they'd face, so they were always prepared. But how could they be prepared to use their powers in the middle of a perfectly ordinary shopping mall, especially when they were trying to keep a low profile?
Oliver ran through all these excuses and explanations as they entered the restaurant, and tried to push his worries aside as he sat down next to Valon, determined to focus his attention on the menu rather than his own problems.
Naturally, Valon chose that moment to ask what had happened. "I have no idea," he murmured in reply. "It just...wouldn't come." He glanced furtively at Valon, hoping the more experienced mutant would have some kind of answer for him.
Aria raised her menu to hide her face and leaned towards Mickey as though to consult his, then muttered out of the side of her mouth, "Let's just follow them to this stupid school, and keep our eyes peeled, 'kay? And try to get friendly with them, so we can find out the school's secrets." Then she straightened and said slightly louder, "Yeah, the miso soup sounds good."

Dinner was pleasant, and it seemed that everyone was having a good enough time as it was. Anna remained quiet unless she was asked a direct question, and quite frankly she didn’t mind being silent. She’d rather listen to other people’s conversations and hear about the mysterious school Aria and Mickey came from. Even when they asked her a question she didn’t really feel like talking, it was just in her character. Valon on the other hand couldn’t stop showing off to Aria, while the others just took part in friendly conversation.
After dinner they sort of started walking around a bit to digest and headed back to the bus. After all they offered to show the two their school and talked to the teachers before loading the bus back to the mutant school.
Of course Aria and Mickey sat by each other and took note of the teachers and other students while also trying not to make it look like they were really spying on them, trying to be friendly when possible. Like on the way to the city, Anna sat with Oliver and kept her gaze out the window. Now that they were back on the bus, she didn’t really have to hide the fact that her eyes didn’t have much colour in them, but she was still pretty tired and looked rather distracted in wondering why her powers weren’t working.
Finally, the bus reached the institute and the students got off the bus, entering the school premise. “’ere it is. ‘ome sweet ‘ome. Welcome you two, to the Xavier Institute.” Valon explained while they got off the bus. “So, shall we start the tour? Oliver, you coming with us?” the Australian asked while trying to hit on Aria.
Once they disembarked from the bus, Anna still kept a close eye on Oliver until Valon called for him. Thinking he’d probably end up going with him she began to follow the flow of traffic and walk towards the entrance with the other students.

Normally, Oliver liked Japanese food - not as much as Chinese; too much fish in his opinion - but this time he was preoccupied and couldn't enjoy any of it. He tried to act normally, tried to laugh with the others, tried to pretend his whole world hadn't just been shaken as much as when he'd first learned he was a mutant.
Anna mostly just looked out the window on the ride back to school, and since Valon and Luke were sitting in front of them and Aria and Mickey behind them, he decided not to talk about it anymore with her. He wondered...would they be sent home if they couldn't use their powers anymore? Where would she go? What if he never saw her again?
Funny, how he would have given anything to leave school just a few weeks ago, yet now he couldn't stand the thought.
Oliver followed the rest of them out of the bus, feeling tired and grateful to be back home after all the excitement of the day. He wondered what the people on the news would say had caused the collapse in the mall. He wondered what had caused it. And whether anyone would mention that there'd been at least two mutants on the scene. Maybe it was a good thing his powers had stopped working, though that wasn't very nice for Aria or Mickey.
He didn't really feel like tagging along on Valon's overly-cheerful, hopefully-impressive tour, which he knew was just an excuse for him to show off in front of Aria. And when he saw Anna quietly going away by herself, he made up his mind to follow her, to get her somewhere they could talk in private about this new problem of theirs. So in answer to Valon's question, he said, "Nah, I've got some homework I still need to do. See you later - nice meeting you," he added to the newcomers, then turned to go.
"Oh, here." Luke stopped him and held out his precious lamps. "If you're going up to your room, could you drop these off for me?"
"Uh, sure." Oliver took them, not protesting because Anna's dark head was getting farther and farther away in the press of people coming off the bus. Trying to make it seem like he wasn't rushing, he hurried after her.

“Awright mate, your loss.” Valon said while Luke and Oliver exchanged some final words before turning to Aria and Mickey. “Now, let’s get started.” He smirked while leading them towards the back instead of the front since it was crowded with other students trying to get in. Valon didn’t want to say anything but he found it odd Oliver was doing homework so early during their Spring Break....oh well, to each his own right?
Mickey followed close by Aria, sticking closer to Luke who’d decided to tag along as well and be their tour guides for the rest of the night, not wanting to leave Aria to her odd shenanigans. He needed to report to his professors and mates back at his school as well.
~~~
Anna's Piano Song ((It's not an official song and it's pretty on and off, so she pauses a lot))
A lot of the students were lounging around since it was spring break, talking about their day down in the city and how the accident happened; luckily they weren’t talking about Anna and Oliver.
In the midst of passing through students, trying to keep her glance away from everyone else’s she went right, towards the large lounge and study like room where she hid away from the others and played piano for hours on end. There were a couple of students in there, like her, minding their own business and reading some books or sketching with pencils or their powers. They looked up to see who’d walked in and then after a moment, gone back to minding their own business. It wasn’t a brightly lit room like other study rooms. It was very tranquil and calming, with a few dim lamps on and enough light so that you could read or draw with. Walking over to the window beside the piano, Anna opened it slightly and looked out to the flower bed underneath where she and Oliver used to sit and talk about flowers and controlling his powers. After feeling the cool breeze flow into her, the air soothes her thoughts; she sat down and lifted the lid of the grand piano, playing a little something.
It wasn’t like her usual calm flowing like self...but more like she was angry or frustrated at something, and then it would get calm halfway, and she’d get frustrated again. For once she was all over the place. She was angry and calm at the same time...was that even possible? Did anyone have trouble with their powers like this? Maybe she should talk to the Professor, maybe it’s normal...but it’s not like they talked about that during class.
Anna was going in circles and felt dizzy. Sometimes she stopped and leaned against the piano to think, sometimes she felt like she just wanted to get up and pace but it would probably annoy some of the people there. Her long black hair covered her face as she leaned against the piano, her pale skin seemed to tremble and show bits of goose bumps of fear, finally her eyes, so blank and empty as if she was losing the one thing that made her special.
((So sorry for the long delay in replying. My internet's been oddly shoddy lately.))
Oliver followed Anna as closely as he dared, not wanting to make it seem like he was dying to walk alongside her again. Not so she would hold his wrist like that again. 'Course not. It was because he wanted to talk to her, that was all.
As the mutants poured back into the school, several of the ones who'd been left behind because of the physical manifestations of their power greeted their returned friends. Oliver spotted Gerald floating around the light fixture, surveying the crowd but not hailing any friend. Did he have any friends?
But he should be paying more attention to his friend. He followed Anna down a less-crowded side corridor, then saw that she entered the piano room. By the time Oliver slowly walked up to the door, she'd already begun to play. He hesitated a moment, then looked down at Luke's bags. She would probably be there playing for a while.
He rejoined the press of people and managed to get through the crowd to the room he knew was Luke's. Leaving the mysterious lamps on the bed, Oliver returned to the hallways and squirmed his way through the press of people till he'd reached the sanctuary of the side hallway again. He paused on the threshold of the little room, listening to Anna's song and feeling the emotions in it. The piano seemed to be speaking his own frustration. This was where they'd first met, he remembered. Him standing on the threshold and peeking in at her playing the piano. On that day, he'd have given anything to lose his powers and just go back home. Now he wasn't so sure.
Finally Oliver shook himself out of his reverie, realizing that the music had stopped. He looked in again, and saw Anna leaning against the piano, her hair hiding her face. So he decided it would be an appropriate time to make his entrance. He walked swiftly to her side, grateful that the piano was on the opposite side of the room from the cluster of chairs where the few other occupants of the room sat. "Hey," he said softly when he reached her side, debating laying a hand on her shoulder but then losing his nerve. "You okay?" Then he grimaced, realizing that nothing could be 'okay' if there was something horribly wrong with them.
