A company called World Events Productions wanted to make a cartoon the old barbaric way (i.e. import animation from a Japanese cartoon and call it your creation)...

They planed on using footage from Mirai Robo Daltanius, Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("fifteen"), and Kousoku Denjin Albegas.

There was an error when they requested footage. They asked for "the show with the lion", and TOEI thought they were asking for Hyakujuu-oh Golion, but they were asking for Daltanius (which was made of a vehicle, a lion, and a gladiator).

WEP liked Golion, and used that instead.

After "Lion Voltron" came "Vehicle Voltron", which was pure sci-fi and was less popular since it lacked the fantasy element of the Lion version. As a result, they dropped plans to adapt Albegas into "Gladiator Voltron".

But they did commission TOEI to make animation for a movie where both Voltrons team up.
